Liber Terra
Liber Terra makes Vintage Story's old books into a library you can actually read. It adds 84 historical works from antiquity through the late medieval period, split into 563 readable volumes sourced from public-domain Project Gutenberg editions. + Tons of QoL
Quick answer
Which Liber Terra release should I use?
Liber Terra 0.7.1 targets 1.22.2, 1.22.3, 1.22.4. It must be installed on the client. Installation on the dedicated server is optional. No extra mods listed for this file.
Where it goes
Is Liber Terra required on the client, server, or both?
It must be installed on the client. Installation on the dedicated server is optional.
This release supports both sides, but the source does not require it on the server.
What else does Liber Terra 0.7.1 need?
0.7.1. Change the file and its required mods may change too.
This file does not list any required mods. Do not add a library just because a different file uses it.
We only count dependency files that match this setup. A file for another loader does not fill the gap.

What does Liber Terra add?
![]()
Liber Terra makes Vintage Story's old books into a library you can actually read. It adds 84 historical works from antiquity through the late medieval period, split into 563 readable volumes sourced from public-domain Project Gutenberg editions. + Tons of QoL for organizing and collecting books.
Find them in ruins and bony soil, browse every volume in the creative inventory, stack books on the floor in eight layouts, carry an armful, or throw one when literary criticism becomes physical. Requires Vintage Story 1.22.x.

What is new
📖 v0.6.0 — READ A BOOK
Every modeled book in the Resonance Archives is now a real book you can take and read. That includes the floor piles, stacks, and rows, plus the books in intact, ruined, and lore bookshelves. Right-click to take one, or Ctrl + right-click to take several.
This goes beyond Resonance Archives, almost all vanilla clutter bookshelves can have book extracted from it. That includes Better Ruins and other ruins.
As a shelf empties, its remaining books keep the exact leaning, stacked, and shelved poses the ruin designers gave them. The displays are filled with distinct readable volumes — mostly Liber Terra books, with occasional vanilla lore — and a lore shelf still gives its specially marked discovery book first.
Not yet: vanilla's separate large-book props — open, closed, standing, piled, lectern, and very-large bookstand variants — were not converted in v0.6.0. They remain decorative, so their books still cannot be taken.
📚 v0.5.0 — nine works, 53 new volumes
The library now reaches farther across the ancient and medieval world:
- Classical Latin: Roman Farm Management: The Treatises of Cato and Varro.
- Classical Greek: Sophocles' Oedipus trilogy and Antigone, plus The Argonautica.
- Medieval Arabic: The Awakening of the Soul by Ibn Tufayl.
- Old English collection: Game and Playe of the Chesse.
- Ancient Sanskrit: Sakoontala by Kālidāsa.
- Ancient Irish: Táin Bó Cúalnge, translated by Joseph Dunn.
- Medieval Italian: Longfellow's Divine Comedy and La Vita Nuova.
This expansion was suggested by @Kynorr.
Features
Long works are divided into volumes that fit the Vintage Story book interface. Heimskringla alone is 25 volumes, so collecting a whole work can be a project of its own.

The full online catalog lists every title, volume count, give code, and Gutenberg source.
- Vanilla book clutter: floor book piles, stacks, and rows convert into persistent piles of actual readable books when their chunks load, including in existing worlds.
- Book-bearing clutter shelves: intact, ruined, mixed-content, and lore shelves keep their frames while every modeled standard-size book becomes a removable readable book in its exact authored pose.
- Bony soil: about a 1% independent chance per pan, without reducing existing drops.
- Vanilla ruin lore: one-third of affected lore rolls become a Liber Terra book; vanilla lore retains two-thirds of its former rate.
- Better Ruins: about 3.09% of its new-lore rolls when that mod is installed.
Every random-loot source can select any volume in any aged or rotten cover. Converted clutter and shelves are filled with distinct readable books instead of yielding the decorative props they replaced. The creative Liber Terra tab exposes the same real lore books for builders and testing.

Sneak and right-click any book onto the ground to begin a pile of up to 17 mixed volumes. Right-click empty-handed to take from the top; Ctrl places or takes several. A held stack can be laid down book by book without a trip through the inventory.
Press F while looking at a pile to choose Messy, Neat, Tumbled, Shelved, Leaning, Uneven, Bridged, or Scattered. Five layouts reproduce the character of book clutter already found in vanilla ruins.

Carry a visible armful of books instead of hiding the collection in an inventory slot. Tap use to read a lore book; hold use for about a second and release to throw it. A thrown book always drops on impact, so an irreplaceable volume is not destroyed.

See this polar bear, It took the whole Odyssey to kill it, all 10 volumes! A movie can't do that, Take that Christopher Nolan!
- Better Ruins: library books join its ruin-chest lore pool.
- Bookbinders: its books pile, carry, and throw in their own covers; the collection joins its Library creative tab.
- Book Trader: stocks twelve library books. Its current release targets Vintage Story 1.19.x, so the compatibility patch remains inert on 1.22 until that mod catches up.
None of these mods is required. Compatibility activates only when the matching mod is installed.
- /liberterra list — list every generated volume.
- /liberterra give <code> — give one complete volume.
- /liberterra giveall <baseCode> — give every volume of a work.
