Forge, Fabric and friends
Forge vs NeoForge vs Fabric vs Quilt: which mod loader should you use?
Use the loader named by the mod or pack file you actually want. Pick the project first, then match its Minecraft version and loader together.
Less crash log. More playing.
Straight answers for the stuff that breaks modded setups: which loader or game build to use, what the server actually needs, where the mod goes and which libraries have to come with it.
Pick what broke
Forge, Fabric and friends
Use the loader named by the mod or pack file you actually want. Pick the project first, then match its Minecraft version and loader together.
Client, server or both?
Put a mod only where that file says it belongs. Client, dedicated server, both, optional and unknown mean different things; a blank field never means “works everywhere.”
Missing mods and version fights
A dependency is more than another project name. You still need a file that matches the mod, Minecraft version and loader you are already using.
Vintage Story without the guesswork
Vintage Story tracks two things separately: where a mod can run, and whether the client or server must have it. Each release also lists the other mods and versions it needs.
Getting Minecraft mods running
Create a separate instance, choose one Minecraft version and one loader, then install only releases and dependencies that match that exact combination.
Packs without the broken instance
Install the pack as its own instance through a compatible launcher. Do not merge it into another profile or replace pinned mods before the original pack launches.
A server that can actually run it
Start with the exact pack release and its server files. Match Minecraft, loader and Java first; use publisher guidance or measured workload—not mod count alone—for RAM and CPU.
Getting Vintage Story mods running
Match the mod release to your Vintage Story version, keep its ZIP intact in the user Mods folder, resolve dependencies and back up a world before enabling it.
Getting Hytale mods running
Hytale is server-side first: enable mods for the world host or dedicated server, not as separate client mods. Match the release to your game build and resolve its dependencies first.
Before you hit download
The project might support your setup while its newest file does not. Match the game version, loader, client or server side and required mods before you add it.
