About this project

What does TreeChopper add?

TreeChopper fells the whole connected tree when a log is broken with an axe.

Break any log with an axe in hand and the tree comes down, leaves included. Trees whose canopies touch are felled together, so a cluster of trees comes down from a single break. Sneak while breaking to suppress the mod and break one block the vanilla way.

The axe loses one durability point per extra block removed, and a broken axe stops the felling. Drops are rolled from loot tables with the tool taken into account, including Fortune and Silk Touch, then merged into stacks and dropped at the block that was broken.

Works with any block from the #minecraft:logs and #minecraft:leaves tags and any item from the #minecraft:axes tag, so modded trees and modded axes are covered as long as they carry those tags. Oak, spruce, birch, jungle, acacia, dark oak, mangrove, cherry, pale oak and the nether stems are all included.

Trigger conditions

Felling happens when all of these hold. If any one fails, breaking behaves exactly like vanilla.

  • the item in the main hand is in the #minecraft:axes tag
  • the broken block is in the #minecraft:logs tag
  • the player is not sneaking
  • enabled is true in the config

Configuration

config/treechopper-common.toml, written on first run.

Key Meaning Range Default
enabled Turns the mod on and off true or false true
maxBlocks Blocks removed per break, not counting the one broken by the player 1 to 8192 512

On Forge and NeoForge the file is also reachable from the config button on the mods screen. Fabric has no config screen, so values are edited in the file.

Requirements

  • Minecraft 26.1, 26.1.1, 26.1.2 or 26.2
  • Forge 62.0.9 or later, NeoForge 26.1.2.97 or later, or Fabric Loader 0.19.3 or later
  • On Fabric: Fabric API
  • Java 25

All six builds share the same felling code, so behavior is identical across loaders. Only the entry point differs.

Limitations

  • Trees whose canopies touch are felled together. This is how the mod works, not a defect; maxBlocks is what bounds it.
  • Reaching maxBlocks leaves the rest of the tree standing.
  • Felling stops at the edge of loaded chunks, so a tree crossing that edge comes down only in part.
  • The felling runs on the server, so on a dedicated server the mod must be installed on the server. A client-only install does nothing there.
  • NeoForge builds for the 26.1 line cover 26.1.2 only. NeoForge has no stable build for base 26.1.
  • On Fabric the block break event has no listener priorities, so a claim protection mod registering after this one is bypassed. Forge and NeoForge are unaffected.
  • Server tick cost at high maxBlocks values has not been measured.
