About this project
What does Liminality: The Backrooms add?
Liminality: The Backrooms — Level Zero
The floor gives way. You fall through broken ceilings, land on damp carpet, and hear fluorescent lights somewhere above you. The rooms look familiar. The way back is gone.
Level Zero is a complete overhaul of Liminality: The Backrooms. The old endless-maze release has been rebuilt into a focused horror expedition with four connected chapters, a creature that hunts by sight and sound, cinematic transitions, and an ending you can reach. The mod appears in Minecraft as Backrooms: Level Zero.
Find your way through
Explore compact yellow rooms, low ceilings, offset doorways, side paths and loops. Working lights offer clues, but each turn can hide what comes next. There are no keys to collect or doors that make you wait for a timer.
Bacteria listens, investigates, stalks, chases and searches. Sprinting and loud interactions draw attention. Break its line of sight, use the corners, and keep quiet. You cannot kill it. If it catches you, you return to your current chapter checkpoint with your current inventory.
- Four connected chapters with saved progress, checkpoints and a final escape.
- First-person cinematics: a collapsing floor, broken ceilings, drifting debris, a suspended fall and a service-corridor escape. Press Space to skip.
- A flashlight on F, found-footage effects, directional ambience and a quieter fluorescent hum.
- Protected architecture: the maze cannot be mined or blasted apart. You can build in side spaces and remove your own blocks. Hunger exhaustion pauses during exploration.
- Private multiplayer journeys: each player has a separate area, Bacteria encounter and progression. Server chat stays available; this is not a shared co-op maze.
- Accessibility options: reduced motion, reduced flashing, captions, effect strength and a post-processing toggle.
Only Level 0 is playable. It has a completion screen and a Return to Overworld button. More levels are planned. A completed expedition stays completed in that world; start a new world for a fresh run.
Installation and entry
Use Minecraft 1.21.1, NeoForge 21.1.250 or newer, Java 21, and GeckoLib 4.8.3 for NeoForge 1.21.1. GeckoLib must be exactly 4.8.3. Install both JARs on every client and on the server. TerraBlender is no longer required by the overhaul.
Download the required GeckoLib 4.8.3 for NeoForge 1.21.1. If your launcher installs a newer GeckoLib automatically, replace it with 4.8.3.
Start a new world and walk across a rare unstable surface in newly generated Overworld terrain. Faint particles and electrical ticks give it away. For immediate entry with cheats enabled, use:
/backrooms enter
Use F for the flashlight and Space to skip a cinematic. Normal movement, sprinting and sneaking still apply. If you become stranded, use
/backrooms recover
Find the visual and accessibility settings under Mods → Backrooms: Level Zero → Config. External shader packs have not been validated; disable this mod's post-processing if your renderer conflicts with it.
Updating from the old mod
Back up your saves, remove the old Backrooms JAR, and use a new world for this overhaul. The earlier Liminality 1.x release is a different generation of the mod; its world layout is not supported by this rebuilt experience. The new release line uses the name Level Zero and version 0.1.3.
Inspiration and assets
Inspired by Kane Pixels' Backrooms footage, with original game assets. No footage, samples or models from Kane Pixels are included. The finite route, flashlight, checkpoints and isolated journeys are gameplay adaptations.
