About this project

What does UPGRADING! add?

Available in v1.1.1

Collect floppy disks. Equip three. Get stronger.

UPGRADING! adds 32 Upgrade Disks: collectible floppies that each give you a passive effect or an ability while equipped. You collect them, level them from 1 to 12, and build a loadout of three. Then you customize each slot with Z-Slots, small modules that boost a disk or make it react to what you do.

UPGRADING! 1.1 Update Trailer

Getting disks

Everything starts with the Encrypted Floppy, found in structure chests and while fishing. Right-click it to open it: you get a random disk, and the opening can roll you up to a higher rarity. Or you can stumble across a random disk in some loot chests.

Disks come in five rarities: Basic, Rare, Epic, Legendary, Mythic. The rarer the disk, the higher the level it starts at (1, 4, 7, 9 and 11), so a high rarity is stronger from the moment you find it.

Found a disk you already own? Put it in a Stonecutter to shred it into Encrypted Fragments. You need those for the last upgrade.

Equipping Disks

Open the Disk Menu (rebindable in Controls) to see everything you have unlocked. Search by name, read exactly what each level does, and drag a disk into one of your three slots. The effect is live as soon as it is equipped.

(Slots mechanics are still being reviewed, I'll maybe make slots unlockable through progression or idk)

UPGRADING! I- I mean.. Leveling Up

Spend XP to raise a disk one level at a time, up to level 12. Each level improves its stats. Level 12 adds an extra effect to the disk, and the final step also costs Encrypted Fragments on top of the XP. The fragment cost grows with rarity.

Z-Slots

Each of your three disk slots has a socket. Plug a Z-Slot in and that disk changes. A Z-Slot is built from three parts, stacked in a crafting table:

Part What it does
Frame Efficiency. Multiplies the values of the disk in that slot (boosts, and shortens cooldowns). 12 frames, from a small boost to special ones that change other slots.
Chip The trigger. Fires when you heal, kill something, deal damage, die, eat, or change dimension.
Board The effect that runs when the chip fires: heal yourself, gain XP, shift your disks along the slots, or send a disk back to your spawn point.

To equip one, hold it and click a socket in the Disk Menu. A boosted value is shown crossed out with the new one next to it, so you always see what the frame is doing. Frames only boost disks, never board effects.

There is also one very special combination. You will know it when you see it.

Advancements

Every disk has its own advancement, and each asks you to do something specific with it. Some are quick, some are hard.
