About this project
What does Timber Chests add?
Timber Chests
Timber Chests is a vanilla-style Minecraft mod that expands wooden storage by giving every wood family its own matching chest variants.
Instead of using the same oak chest everywhere, you can craft chests that visually match the wood used in your builds. The mod also updates chest boats, the Bamboo Chest Raft, and chest minecarts so their storage matches the corresponding wood family.
The idea is simple: add more visual variety to storage while keeping the familiar behavior, balance, and simplicity of vanilla Minecraft.
Wooden Chests
Timber Chests adds regular and trapped chest variants for all twelve non-oak wood families:
- Spruce
- Birch
- Jungle
- Acacia
- Dark Oak
- Mangrove
- Cherry
- Pale Oak
- Bamboo
- Crimson
- Warped
- Poplar
Every chest supports both single and double-chest forms with matching textures.
They retain the expected vanilla chest behavior, including:
- Standard storage capacity
- Opening and closing animations
- Vanilla sounds
- Double-chest connections
- Hopper and automation support
- Chest obstruction rules
- Inventory persistence
- Comparator output
- Redstone functionality for trapped chests
Wood-Aware Crafting
Chest crafting recognizes the type of planks used in the recipe.
Using eight matching planks creates the corresponding wooden chest. Spruce planks create a Spruce Chest, Cherry planks create a Cherry Chest, Poplar planks create a Poplar Chest, and so on.
Oak planks continue to create the vanilla Chest.
Recipes containing mixed wood types or unsupported planks also produce the vanilla Chest, keeping the crafting system predictable and compatible with normal gameplay.
Each custom regular chest can also be combined with a Tripwire Hook to create its matching trapped variant.
Matching Chest Boats and Rafts
Non-oak chest boats use chests that match the wood family of their boat, including the Poplar Chest Boat.
The Bamboo Chest Raft also uses a matching Bamboo Chest.
Their crafting recipes require the corresponding regular chest variant. For example, a Spruce Chest Boat requires a Spruce Boat and Spruce Chest, while a Poplar Chest Boat uses a Poplar Boat and Poplar Chest.
Apart from their matching appearance and recipes, they behave like normal vanilla chest boats and rafts.
Wooden Chest Minecarts
Timber Chests adds matching wooden chest minecart variants for every supported non-oak wood family, including Poplar.
Each variant uses its corresponding regular wooden chest in the crafting recipe and keeps its selected wood type after being placed, moved, saved, or reloaded.
Wooden chest minecarts retain normal vanilla behavior, including:
- Minecart movement and collisions
- Standard storage capacity
- Hopper interaction
- Rail and detector rail behavior
- Dispenser placement
- Correct item drops
- Persistent wood variants
Compatibility
Timber Chests includes compatibility tags for wooden chests, trapped wooden chests, and regular-only wooden chests.
This allows recipes, datapacks, and other mods to recognize the new chest variants without treating trapped chests as valid in places where only regular chests should be accepted.
The mod is available for both Fabric and NeoForge.
Vanilla by Design
Timber Chests does not introduce new progression systems, machines, interfaces, or complicated mechanics.
It simply extends Minecraft's existing wood-family system to chests and chest-based vehicles, allowing storage to fit naturally into more builds while preserving the familiar vanilla gameplay experience.
