About this project
What does Dark Echoes add?
Dark Echoes
Inhabiting the deepest, darkest and most desolate caves, we find the Ancient Cities, abandoned and forgotten... Except, they were never completely abandoned, just... inhabited by new and darker residents.
The echoes of ores being mined, the excited run to a chest, the sounds of a scream so high it is not heard by human ears. In the ancient city, the Warden resides, and now no longer alone. Alongside the Warden, you can find the Ancient Bats, Corrupted Golems, and maybe if you are lucky, you may find a trader or two..
The Dark Echoes mod aims to be a vanilla-friendly expansion of the Deep Dark biomes and Ancient Cities, designed for the 2026 Modjam, featuring new challenges, mobs and items, as well as giving you a reason to venture to the Ancient City, hunting the mobs and looting the new rooms. There will be a new progression system for tools, armors, and weapons.
Featuring:
Guardians of the Ancient City
New hostile and passive mobs will inhabit the Deep Dark and Ancient Cities, including the new Echo Sentinel, a corrupted Iron Golem which protects the valuables found in the chests. Will be possible to turn a normal Iron Golem into one, albeit flawed.
Ancient Loot
As you explore the city, you may encounter new rooms and loot in chests, from shards of broken tools and armors to seeds of plants long forgotten, maybe a book or an unique enchantment table.
Relics and Gear
Find the Resonance Crystals in the corpse of the Warden, to create the new Echo armor, tools and weapons. Unlike traditional equipment, this gear grows with the player. Hunting specific mobs may increase you damage, taking specific damage and living and the armor learns to adapt to this damage. The Ancient Gear is your story, shown in how it evolves.
Ancient Relics
Exploring and looting, fighting the enhanced mobs and bringing the loot to your forge may result in you finding new relics that will help you surive the world better. One such item is the Warden Totem, crafted from a Resonance Crystal, Ancient Scraps and a Totem of Undying, grants you extra protection to the Warden, as well as functioning as a rechargeable Totem of Undying. It holds a set amount of charges, times you can die, before you need to reaugment it, before it breaks completely.
Our Design Philosophy
Instead of creating a ton of ultimately useless content, we focus on delivering a handful of effective, high quality components, to enhance your world.
The Ancient Cities have shown potential to a true expansion of how the old technology still can be used, so we dive into what could have been, in the world if the Ancient Civilizations still stood.
Our aim is to create an enhanced experience, where your choices in how you fight and use the new end-game gear help you design a better player story, building gear from decent to OP, through every single swipe, every block mined/broken, every time you nearly die to a creeper or drown.
Planned Features:
- Additional Deep Dark creatures
- Expanded Ancient City structures
- More relics and collectibles
- Additional Ancient Gear upgrades
- New resonance-based mechanics
- Further Ancient City lore and secrets
- Adding in the full gear sets
