About this project

What does Old School Levels add?

Is Minecraft's vanilla progression too easy? Do you find grinding levels fun? Well try out Old School Levels!

This mod overhauls much of the default Minecraft experience to be a bit more "Old School". Inspired by Old School Runescape, levels have been added for many of the core mechanics of the game. These levels scale from 1-99 with an escalating xp requirement to level. Things that you are used to speed-running through will now require specific levels to either craft or use.

You can move the Spells, Skills, and Character buttons by holding Shift and Left Click/dragging the buttons.

Starting in version 1.0.1, you will have the option to opt-in to Cloud Saves. This will save your progress based on your account and will follow you wherever you go! This allows for Cross-World progress!

Check out the Leaderboards to see who's on top, or where you fall on the list! (if you've opted in)

If you would like to Opt-In for Cloud Saves and the Leaderboard, go to the Config Screen and Enable Cloud Saves!

Skills Screen:

There are currently the following Skills:

Attack
Defense
Strength
Ranged (Custom Functionality)
Life
Mining
Smithing
Woodcutting
Fletching (Custom Functionality)
Fishing
Cooking
Arcana (Custom Functionality)
Magic (Custom Functionality)
Mobility (Custom Functionality)

Level up your combat skills to get combat bonuses based on your selected combat style!

What about the Custom Content?

Ranged/Fletching:

Just like in OSRS, there are now tiered bows and arrows that deal more damage the higher level you achieve.

There are Bows for every type of wood. All requiring different fletching levels to craft.

Different tiered arrows also deal higher damage.

Arrows are now crafted with Arrow heads, sticks, and feathers.

To craft sticks, place a knife and a log in the crafting window. Each log tier grants more sticks.

Magic/Arcana:

There are many different spells to play around with.

These all require items called Sigils to cast. These can either be kept in your inventory, or within a sigil pouch.

You can find Sigilic Ore all throughout the world (about as common as Coal). Once you find some, you can smelt them in a furnace to get Blank Sigils. From here, you must craft Echoes to locate the altars where you can then craft the Sigils based on the altar.

Sigils

Echoes

Spells can be cast with the middle mouse button.

Casting Telekinesis on a zombie is not recommended

Mobility:

Instead of something like Agility where you can take shortcuts, I wanted to do something a bit different.

With the mobility skill, there are many traversal perks that you can unlock as you level up. By default, your players movement speed scales with the level. So as you level up, you become faster. Here is a list of unlocks for Mobility:

Level 15 - Jump Scaling (As you level up, your jump height increases)

Level 30 - Fall Damage Reduction (Eventually at level 99, you take almost no fall damage)

Level 45 - Swim Speed (Swim faster!)

Level 60 - Wall Jumping (When against a wall, you can now jump a second time, allowing wall climbing if between two vertical walls)

Level 80 - Water Striding (Jump on water, so you no longer have to worry about swimming)

Aside from the unlocks, running and jumping have been decoupled from the hunger system. There is now a stamina bar that is used for those actions. As you level up, you get more stamina so you can run for longer.

Known Issues:

Some Vein Mining Mods don't grant XP when used.

For the Future:

I'd like to add the following things to the mod!

Farming
Theiving (Steal from villagers or level up to loot certain types of chests)
Other skills based on feedback.
Hardcore Leaderboard.
