About this project

What does Beavers & Unicorns add?

⚠️ Requires GeckoLib (5.5.3+). Install it alongside Fabric API, or beavers and squirrels will crash the game the moment they try to render.

Plant it, and the forest starts living

Beavers & Unicorns adds new trees and the animals that actually live in them — not decoration standing next to your base, but a forest that fells itself, dams your streams, and moves squirrels into the exact grove you planted.

🌰 New trees, a full wood set each

  • Chestnut Oak — a broad, oak-like crown, dropping acorns.
  • Red Horse Chestnut — palmate leaves and hanging blossoms. A blossom only turns into fruit once a bee actually pollinates it — no bee, no chestnut, so keep a hive nearby if you want a harvest.

Both come with the complete set you'd expect from a real wood type: logs and stripped logs, planks, stairs, slabs, fence gates, doors and trapdoors, signs (including hanging ones), shelves, and boats with chest boats.

Getting new, unusual saplings out of one isn't as simple as breaking grass, either — feed a beaver a golden apple or a golden carrot directly and it has a real (if slim) chance of handing you a sapling in return. Ordinary apples and berries buy the beaver's trust too, just not that.

🦫 Beavers: the reason your river has a dam in it now

  • Spot a fellable log near open water and a beaver will fell the whole tree, then haul the logs to a stream and build a dam out of matching wood.
  • Actively goes looking for dropped items nearby and picks them up on its own — toss it a stack of logs and it'll walk over for them. Logs of a known species go straight into speeding up the dam; everything else gets carried off and stored in its own barrel next to it
  • Live in small colonies
  • Alert each other when the dam gets disturbed — and notice if you've been helping yourself to their barrel.
  • Fight back and call for help. Hurt one while it's in the water and the tail cracks down as an alarm — every beaver with a dam nearby comes to back it up.
  • Breed on carrots and beets like any farm animal
  • Replant the exact spot they just cleared with a sapling of the same species — works on vanilla trees too, not just the two new ones.
  • Keep a farm too close to the water and don't be surprised if a ripe crop goes missing — a beaver will occasionally help itself to one.
  • Grunts, grumbles and mutters to itself like your grandma looking for her glasses. Somehow it works.

🐿️ Squirrels: only where you actually grew something

Genuinely some of the most alive AI on any mob in Minecraft — not a figure of speech, an actual claim we're happy to be held to.

  • Spawn exclusively in a grove of chestnut oak or red horse chestnut that a player planted
  • Skittish by default. Sneak up and hold out an acorn or a chestnut to get one to trust you instead of bolting up the nearest trunk
  • Actually glides. Fall from a branch and it doesn't just drop — it catches air and sails, then happily climbs all the way back up for another go.
  • Forages fruit from the treetops and buries nuts for later — cached nuts it never comes back for can sprout into a brand new tree on their own, no planting required.

A note on polish

This is a beta. Most of it has been played and fixed, but a few textures may still look a little rough around the edges. That's on the list, not forgotten.

More life is planned for future updates, too.
