About this project

What does Pick Climber add?

Pick Climber

Pick Climber turns compatible pickaxes into physical climbing and traversal tools. Anchor yourself to walls, slow dangerous falls, move between holds, cross unstable surfaces, and swing beneath ceilings while exploring caves, cliffs, structures, and other difficult terrain.

Movement is based on deliberate tool use rather than flight or automatic wall climbing. Every successful latch consumes durability, each pickaxe has its own recovery cooldown, and all movement, collision, fall braking, and tool damage are validated by the server.

Features

  • Wall climbing: Attach pickaxes to valid wall surfaces and move between anchor points.
  • Fall braking: Catch yourself during dangerous falls and gradually absorb your downward speed instead of stopping instantly.
  • Directional braking: Move sideways while sliding and commit to a diagonal braking path during high-speed falls.
  • Surface behavior: Stable blocks provide secure holds, while sand, gravel, concrete powder, snow, and similar unstable materials cause a controlled descent.
  • Dual-pickaxe support: Use two equipped pickaxes to brake faster, distribute durability damage, and create a new anchor while the other tool remains attached.
  • Ceiling traversal: Specialized pickaxes can latch onto ceilings, support the player from above, and build momentum through controlled swinging.
  • Momentum-based releases: Swinging momentum can strengthen or oppose a directional ceiling jump, allowing skilled players to cross gaps and move around edges.
  • Free-hand interaction: When the off-hand pickaxe holds the anchor, the main hand remains available for mining, combat, building, and item use.
  • Visual feedback: Colored indicators show valid anchors, unstable grips, unavailable surfaces, missing enchantments, cooldowns, obstructions, and out-of-range targets.
  • Integrated animations: Active pickaxes use dedicated wall and ceiling poses in first and third person, including multiplayer synchronization.
  • Data-driven compatibility: Block surfaces and compatible climbing tools can be extended or excluded through tags by datapacks and other mods.

Enchantments

Pick Climber I–III

Improves vertical climbing boosts and wall jumps. Higher levels provide additional upward movement, making it the primary specialization for fast vertical traversal.

Sturdy Latch I

Reinforces unstable surfaces. Sand, gravel, concrete powder, and snow become firm anchor points after fall braking, and their extended recovery cooldown is reduced to match normal surfaces.

Sturdy Latch is compatible with both climbing specializations.

Strong Grip I

Allows pickaxes to anchor to the underside of solid blocks, enabling ceiling suspension, controlled swinging, momentum-based jumps, and advanced traversal with two pickaxes.

Strong Grip and Pick Climber are mutually exclusive specializations. Unstable ceilings additionally require Sturdy Latch.

Compatibility and Requirements

  • Minecraft 1.21.1
  • NeoForge
  • Java 21
  • Required on both the client and server
  • No additional library dependencies

Compatible tools are controlled through the pickclimber:climbing_tools and pickclimber:excluded_climbing_tools tags, allowing modpacks and datapacks to integrate additional pickaxes and hybrid tools.

The current release is a beta. Core climbing, fall braking, unstable surfaces, enchantments, ceiling movement, indicators, and multiplayer-authoritative physics are implemented and playable.
