About this project

What does Rack of Drying add?

Drying rack with all the classic recipes, also to make dried meat and dried berries, thatch blocks, and a thatch bed.

Thatch blocks are dried hay bales

Sleep in the thatch bed, just like a straw bed, and it breaks after one night

Drying Rack

  • Wall-mounted rack that holds one item at a time and slowly dries/dehydrates it over time into a different result - a general "reverse hydration" device, not just a food dehydrator
  • Hopper/pipe automation supported (insert items, pull results) - extraction is blocked while something is actively drying, so automation can't skim a half-finished item; automation can be disabled entirely via config
  • Live progress shown through JEI (recipe browsing), The One Probe, and Jade (hover tooltips)
  • Fully data-driven: new drying recipes can be added by any datapack/addon mod via a JSON recipe type, or scripted through CraftTweaker

Configuration

  • Toggle hopper/pipe automation on the drying rack
  • Toggle whether the Thatch Bed sets your respawn point

Thatch - a full building set

  • Thatch block, Stairs, Slab, and Wall (the Wall properly connects to itself and to solid blocks)
  • Craftable from Hay Blocks; hardness matches a vanilla Hay Bale, and it burns the same way too
  • Thatch Bed: a simplified, no-frills two-block bed reusing the thatch texture - sleeps and sets your respawn point exactly like a vanilla bed (spawn-setting can be turned off per-config), but breaks after one full night's sleep and hands the item straight back to you - a consumable, rustic alternative to a real bed

What it dries

Food:

  • Raw meats (beef, porkchop, chicken, mutton, rabbit) → Jerky, a long-lasting preserved-meat snack
  • Fruits (apple, melon, sweet berries, glow berries, chorus fruit) → Fruit Leather
  • Seeds (wheat, melon, pumpkin, beetroot) → Dried Seeds - eaten quickly, like dried kelp
  • Kelp → Dried Kelp
  • Rotten Flesh → Leather (slow - you're basically tanning it)

Materials (the "reverse hydration/decay" side of things):

  • Hay Block → Thatch (this mod's own building material)
  • Wet Sponge → Sponge
  • Sandstone → Sand
  • Tuff → Calcite
  • Coarse Dirt → Gravel
  • Mud → Packed Mud
  • Lead → String
  • Saplings → Dead Bush → Sticks (a two-stage decay chain)
  • All 16 Concrete colors → their Concrete Powder
  • and more
  • Add your own recipes with JSON data packs or crafttweaker for modpacks

Compatibility

  • JEI - browse all drying recipes
  • The One Probe / Jade - see a drying rack's live progress by looking at it
  • CraftTweaker - add/remove drying recipes from scripts
  • Recipe inputs use item tags (forge:foods/raw_meat, forge:foods/fruits, forge:seeds) where possible, so other mods' meat/fruit/seed items can plug into the existing recipes without needing a datapack override
