About this project

What does World Engine add?

World Engine

World Engine is a performance and scalability addon for Sable, built to keep large moving structures and physics-heavy worlds running smoothly without reducing simulation quality.

Sable makes large-scale moving structures possible. World Engine focuses on making those simulations scale better when your world contains more entities, larger structures, or much bigger physical spaces.

It does not replace Sable and it does not add a separate physics system. Instead, it optimizes some of Sable's hottest server-side paths while preserving Sable's existing physics behavior.

What does World Engine do?

World Engine improves the parts of Sable that become expensive as your world gets larger.

Its current optimizations include:

Adaptive spatial queries
Chooses between section-based lookup and direct body scanning depending on which is cheaper for the current query.

Large-body handling
Very large moving structures are tracked without expanding them into hundreds of thousands of section entries.

World-scale collision queries
Huge query regions no longer need to iterate through every section inside the requested volume.

Lower allocation pressure
Hot query paths reuse internal data where possible to reduce unnecessary garbage collection.

More efficient active-body processing
Physics work is focused on bodies that actually need to be processed.

Sable-native physics fidelity
World Engine keeps Sable's configured physics substeps and timestep behavior. Performance improvements are designed to avoid lowering solver quality or changing collision precision.

Why use it?

World Engine is intended for worlds where Sable is doing more than moving a small contraption or two.

You may benefit from it if you use:

  • large ships, vehicles, platforms, or moving bases
  • many Sable sublevels at once
  • heavily populated worlds with lots of entities near moving structures
  • large physics-enabled builds
  • modpacks where server tick time becomes a concern
  • world-scale or long-distance physics setups

For small Sable setups, the difference may be modest. The larger and busier the simulation becomes, the more important efficient indexing and query behavior becomes.

No simulation-quality tradeoff

World Engine is not a "make physics cheaper by making physics worse" mod.

It does not intentionally:

  • reduce Sable's configured physics substeps
  • lower collision precision
  • replace exact collision bounds with approximate ones
  • disable physics for distant structures simply to gain TPS

The goal is to avoid unnecessary work while keeping the same simulation results.

Requirements

World Engine is an addon for Sable.

You must have a compatible version of Sable installed.

Current development targets:

  • Minecraft 1.21.1
  • NeoForge
  • Sable

Always use the World Engine version intended for your Minecraft and Sable version.

Installation

  1. Install NeoForge for the supported Minecraft version.
  2. Install Sable.
  3. Place the World Engine .jar in your mods folder.
  4. Start the game or server normally.

World Engine is primarily a backend optimization mod, so there is no extra block, item, or gameplay system you need to configure before using it.

Does it add new blocks or mechanics?

No.

World Engine is focused on performance, scalability, and simulation infrastructure for Sable.

If it is working correctly, most players should simply notice that larger Sable setups behave better under load.

Is it server-side?

Most of World Engine's work targets server-side simulation and physics performance.

For modpacks and multiplayer environments, install the version required by your pack/server setup.

Is it safe for existing worlds?

World Engine is designed as an optimization layer rather than a content mod, and it does not introduce world-generation content or player-owned block data of its own.

As with any physics or core-system mod, back up important worlds before changing mod versions.

Performance philosophy

World Engine follows a simple rule:

Do less unnecessary work, not less physics.

The project prioritizes:

  1. preserving Sable's simulation behavior
  2. reducing server tick cost
  3. reducing unnecessary allocations
  4. scaling better with large structures and large worlds
  5. making optimizations measurable and testable

Development status

World Engine is actively developed.

The project is still evolving as larger Sable workloads reveal new bottlenecks, so additional optimizations and compatibility work may arrive over time.

Bug reports with logs, profiler captures, reproduction steps, and information about the size/number of moving structures are especially useful.

For modpack authors

World Engine is intended to be lightweight from a gameplay perspective and can be useful in packs that rely heavily on Sable.

It is especially relevant for technical, engineering, vehicle, moving-base, automation, or large multiplayer modpacks where physics simulation can become a meaningful part of the server tick budget.
