About this project

What does Howling Werewolf add?

Howling Werewolf

Become a werewolf, master the beast within, and survive in a world that has learned how to hunt you.

Howling Werewolf is a werewolf transformation and progression mod for Minecraft Java Edition, available on Minecraft 1.20.1 (Forge) and Minecraft 1.21.1 (NeoForge). Become infected and awaken your werewolf bloodline, grow stronger through levels and skills, unlock different werewolf forms, fight Hunters armed with Silver, and ultimately challenge the Alpha Trial to awaken Beast Form.

The mod connects infection, awakening, lunar transformations, progression, Hunters, Silver, Wolfsbane, and the Alpha Trial into a complete survival journey.

For more detailed gameplay information, press K in-game to open the Werewolf Progression screen. Release updates, downloads, source code, and additional project information are available on the GitHub project and Releases pages.

Getting Started

There are two main ways to become a werewolf:

  1. Become infected while being attacked by a wolf or Feral Werewolf, then wait for your werewolf bloodline to awaken on a later night.
  2. Use a Werewolf Potion to awaken immediately.

Once awakened:

  • Press J to transform or return to human form when the current rules allow it.
  • Press K to open the Werewolf Progression screen.
  • Hunt creatures while transformed to gain werewolf experience.
  • Spend your progression points to improve attributes and learn new abilities.

During a full moon in the Overworld, your werewolf bloodline may force you to transform even if you would prefer to remain human.

Werewolf Progression

Werewolf progression is mainly built around levels, attribute upgrades, and learnable skills.

As you grow stronger, you can improve abilities such as:

  • claw damage and natural defense;
  • movement speed and jumping;
  • regeneration and knockback resistance;
  • lifesteal and hunting efficiency;
  • claw reach, looting, and other passive bonuses.

You can also unlock a variety of active and passive skills, including Night Vision, Summon Wolf Spirits, Wildstride Form, Moonblood Surge, Armored Instinct, Long Claws, Tool Claws, Fire Claws, and Bloody Bite.

The default maximum werewolf level is 20 and can be adjusted through configuration.

Three Werewolf Forms

Werewolf

The main werewolf combat form.

Fight with your claws, gain natural damage reduction and movement bonuses, and use most of your unlocked werewolf abilities.

Quadruped Wolf

Learn Wildstride Form and press G to switch into Quadruped Wolf form.

This form greatly increases movement speed and jump height, making it well suited for exploration and pursuit, but slightly reduces attack damage. Equipment cannot be worn in this form.

Beast Form

Permanently unlocked after completing the Alpha Trial for the first time.

Press H to enter the more powerful Beast Form, greatly improving combat, speed, jumping, and defense. The tradeoff is faster hunger consumption, and equipment cannot be worn in this form.

Hunters, Silver, and Wolfsbane

The world reacts to your werewolf identity.

Hunters are neutral toward ordinary humans but become hostile when they encounter a transformed werewolf. Hunters may appear in forests and can also form persistent patrols around villages visited by players.

Hunters wield Silver Swords, which deal additional damage to werewolves and inflict Weakness.

Hunters are also a renewable source of Wolfsbane Flowers.

Wolfsbane is closely associated with resisting the werewolf bloodline. A Wolfsbane Potion can cure lycanthropy, while Silver equipment gives ordinary humans a way to fight back against werewolves.

Feral Werewolves may also appear in eligible Overworld forests during dark full-moon nights.

Alpha Trial

The Alpha Trial is the final challenge of the current werewolf progression.

Once you are strong enough, open the K screen and enter the Alpha Trial page. The game directly shows the Moon-Oath ritual layout, entry requirements, offerings, and rewards.

Prepare the ritual, begin the Moon-Oath at night while in normal Werewolf form, defeat the empowered Silver-Oath Watchers, and then face the multi-stage Moon-Crowned Alpha Werewolf boss fight.

Your first victory permanently unlocks Beast Form.

The Alpha Trial can be repeated for additional rewards, with some rewards varying by difficulty.

The Alpha Trial is currently designed for a single participating player.
