Vertical Slabs

A building-focused Minecraft mod that adds functional vertical slabs for a wide variety of vanilla blocks.

Unlike normal slabs, which divide a block horizontally, this mod allows blocks to be placed as vertical halves, greatly expanding the possibilities for detailed building.

Use them for thin walls, pillars, window frames, decorations, detailed façades, and many other structures that are difficult to create with vanilla blocks alone.

The goal of this mod is not simply to make blocks look like vertical slabs. Wherever possible, vertical slabs retain the appearance, properties, sounds, interactions, and special behavior of their original vanilla blocks.

🧱 Large Collection of Vertical Slabs

A large number of vanilla building, natural, decorative, and functional blocks are available as vertical slabs.

Where possible, the mod references Minecraft's existing block textures instead of duplicating them, helping vertical slabs remain visually consistent with vanilla Minecraft and compatible resource packs.

Support continues to expand as development progresses.

↔️ Flexible Placement

Vertical slabs can be placed on either half of a block space, allowing much more precise control when building.

Two compatible vertical halves can also occupy the same block space, allowing structures to be built naturally without requiring awkward workarounds.

Placement behavior is designed to feel as close to vanilla slab placement as possible.

🔄 Placement Modes

Different placement modes are available to make building with vertical slabs easier.

These modes reduce the need to constantly switch blocks while constructing larger builds and provide more control over how slabs are positioned.

🔁 Horizontal ↔ Vertical Slab Conversion

Supported slabs can be converted between their normal horizontal form and their vertical form.

This makes it easier to switch building styles without repeatedly crafting different variants.

🪨 Stonecutter Support

Compatible stone-based vertical slabs can be crafted using the Stonecutter.

Stonecutter recipes are generally only added where the corresponding vanilla block already makes sense as a stonecutting material, keeping the system consistent with vanilla Minecraft.

⚙️ Functional Vertical Blocks

Vertical slabs are not limited to decorative blocks.

Where technically possible, this mod attempts to reproduce the behavior of the original block even after it has been converted into a vertical slab.

Supported functionality includes features such as:

• Redstone interaction and output
• Light emission
• Target block behavior
• Note Block instrument behavior
• Amethyst resonance and related behavior
• Chiseled Bookshelf book storage
• Chiseled Bookshelf comparator output
• Magma Block behavior
• Netherrack behavior
• Wool-related properties
• Biome-dependent block coloring
• Block-specific sounds
• Particles and visual effects
• Other block-specific vanilla mechanics

The long-term goal is for a vertical slab to behave as much like its full-block counterpart as reasonably possible.

🟠 Copper Support

Copper vertical slabs support Minecraft's copper mechanics where applicable.

This includes:

• Oxidation
• Multiple oxidation stages
• Waxing
• Removing wax
• Copper-related decorative blocks
• Functional copper blocks where supported

Some specialized copper blocks, including Redstone-related blocks such as Copper Bulbs, are also supported.

🪟 Glass and Transparent Blocks

Vertical variants of transparent and translucent blocks are also included.

This includes blocks such as:

• Glass
• Other supported transparent blocks

Rendering is adjusted where necessary to keep them looking as close as possible to their vanilla equivalents.

🌿 Vanilla-Like Visual Behavior

Certain vanilla blocks have visuals that cannot be reproduced correctly by simply cutting their model in half.

The mod therefore includes additional handling for blocks such as biome-colored blocks and blocks with different textures on individual faces.

Examples include:

• Grass-related biome colors
• Directional textures
• Special side textures
• Transparent layers
• Animated or special block textures

This helps avoid the common problem of vertical slabs looking like simple stretched or incorrectly cropped versions of the original block.

🔴 Redstone Support

Several functional vertical slabs interact with Redstone.

Depending on the original block, vertical versions may:

• Receive Redstone signals
• Produce Redstone signals
• Emit light
• Provide comparator output
• Preserve block-specific Redstone behavior

Support varies depending on the original Minecraft block and continues to improve with updates.

🔍 JEI Support

Just Enough Items (JEI) is supported but is not required.

When JEI is installed, vertical slabs can be searched more easily.

Search aliases are provided for terms such as:

vertical

vertical slab

縦

縦ハーフ

Additional aliases are included for supported languages where possible.

This allows players using different Minecraft languages to find the same blocks without needing to know their internal English names.

🎨 Creative Mode Integration

The mod provides a dedicated Creative Mode tab containing its vertical slabs.

Supported blocks may also appear alongside related vanilla blocks in appropriate Creative Mode categories.

The dedicated tab can be disabled through the mod configuration if you prefer a cleaner Creative inventory.

Several features can be adjusted through the mod configuration.

Depending on the version, configurable options may include:

• Dedicated Creative tab visibility
• Placement-related options
• Gameplay behavior
• Explosion-related behavior
• Other optional features

Additional configuration options may be introduced in future updates.

🎯 Design Philosophy

The main goal of this mod is:

To make vanilla Minecraft blocks usable as vertical slabs without unnecessarily removing the features that make those blocks unique.

Rather than creating hundreds of purely decorative copies, the mod aims to preserve as much vanilla behavior as reasonably possible.

That includes block properties, Redstone behavior, sounds, lighting, particles, interactions, oxidation, biome coloring, and other special mechanics.

JEI is recommended for easier searching and recipe viewing, but it is not required for the mod to function.

🚧 Development Status

This mod is actively developed.

Because Minecraft contains many blocks with unique rendering and gameplay behavior, some vertical slabs may still behave differently from their full-block counterparts.

New blocks, compatibility improvements, bug fixes, and additional vanilla behavior are planned for future updates.
