About this project
What does Monstrous World add?

A mysterious darkness is leaking into the world, seemingly from a dimension below ours. Slowly, it spreads upward, eventually breaking out on the surface and transforming all it infects into monstrous forms: blocks, plants, villagers, and even players!
Already, this monstrous darkness has altered the world, borrowing from the imaginations of its inhabitants to create creatures and landscapes straight out of Halloween and horror movies. While some of the infected have embraced their changes and adapted to a new life as witches, goblins, vampires, and more, those still untouched by the darkness hunt monsters and guard their humanity. And many do so for a good reason: though some monsters retain civilized ways, others have embraced evil.

Monstrous World will overhaul your Minecraft world, turning it into Halloween year-round.
Players will encounter a new, complex world with several new spooky biomes, ores, decorative blocks, lore, structures, loot, decorations, magical items, and even monster societies that trade with one another and work together for survival.
Monstrous beings include Goblins, Vampires, Werewolves, Trolls, and Swamp Monsters, while others, like Witches, Sorcerers, or Mad Scientists, are more human with magic or insanity. The monsters of this mod are traditional, mimicking those in horror movies, and the player could become any type if they acquire the Mysterious Darkness infection.
Supernatural bites from some creatures can also infect the player, but artifacts made by monster hunters and magic users can help you guard your humanity and your life.
In addition, two groups of monster hunters roam the world. The Hunter’s Guild slays evil monsters with bad reputations and can be traded with if your reputation isn’t bad. Players can also join the Hunter’s Guild to guard their humanity, gear up, and go on monster-slaying missions, even though such a career path is dangerous. Another group of hunters is secretly jealous of the power monsters hold, and will slay not only non-humans, but humans with magic or those delving into mad science.

Monstrous World offers the following features:
- A Mysterious Darkness Infection that can infect players, eventually placing them into one of nine known monster factions
- All monster factions have six levels and an advancement tree for progression, and usually offer guidebooks that the player can find
- A reputation system that causes monster players more problems with monster hunters if Reputation is too low
- Many new, spooky mobs with unique ways of attacking the player. Monsters are traditional.
- Five new, spooky biomes which capture the Halloween spirit, and four of which are more dangerous than regular biomes!
- Some monsters can deliver supernatural bites that infect the player, and mutations are also a risk in some cases
- Monster villages where you can trade with the inhabitants and (usually) get out unscathed!
- New features that spawn in the world
- Six new, spooky tree types and six new wood types
- New trees, structures, and plants spawn even in vanilla biomes and those from many other mods, adding to the spooky atmosphere
- In-game, collectable lore which is discovered by exploring, which assists the player with gameplay and allows players to discover how Monstrous World works naturally.
- Many new potion effects and some curses to make gameplay more difficult!
- Countermeasures to defend against monsters and dangerous potion effects
- Trick or Treat bags that don't forget the "Trick" part of trick or treating!
- Many new spooky decoration blocks
- Many new monster villages in which players can trade for powerful items
- The ability to become a monster hunter and to protect your humanity
- Powerful enemies require special defenses

The main feature of Monstrous World is Mysterious Darkness, an infection appearing in random places after a player has been in the same area for several days or more.
Mysterious Darkness stains natural blocks a dark purple/black color and alters plants, while ignoring ores, chests, workstations, etc. It tends to appear in small, scattered patches.
Ordinary human players who walk across these altered blocks gain the “Mysterious Darkness” effect, which cannot be removed by milk or dying, and lasts 3-4 Minecraft days. However, countermeasures can be found by opening Trick or Treat bags or by exploring.
Once the infection is completed, the player will join one of nine known Monster Factions. This is random unless the player uses a special item to choose their own faction.
Players who are already monstrous in some way cannot become infected by Mysterious Darkness.

The Witch/Warlock Faction

This is the first faction added by Monstrous World and grants the player the ability to use earthly magic, which includes brewing, the creation of charms, the use of familiars, and the creation of magical Tomes. Those in this faction can work up to being able to ride a flying broom, of which there are several different types. This faction focuses more on magic than combat, but with big rewards.
The Goblin Faction

This is the second faction added by Monstrous World. Goblin players will have partially altered player skins and goblin ears and will enjoy faster movement speed as they learn the arts of trickery and talented crafting. Goblins learn sneaky but powerful ways to attack enemies and defend themselves, can bake magical Pumpkin Cookies, and can modify existing tools and weapons by applying Precious Stones to them, making them underrated but quite powerful.
The Troll Faction

Trolls are all about metalwork and combat, and are physically among the strongest of the monsters, with a reputation for being fierce warriors. Trolls can make metal alloys that no one else can and work well with Goblins when it comes to creating truly powerful weapons and tools. They are valued for defending other monsters against threats and are immune to supernatural bites and mutations. Troll players will have partially altered skins and models, and can level up to use truly amazing tools and weapons.
The Sorcery Faction

Sorcerers are the most envied among the monsters for their ability to use elemental magic against enemies and perform powerful rituals. They are still human, and it is difficult for them to earn a bad reputation (and thus the wrath of the Hunter's Guild). Sorcerers can throw magic spells, and there are four types of elemental magic that a new Sorcerer can receive. Some can even summon spirit helpers and teleport between points.
Sorcerers level up by performing magic and rituals, which require a lot of magical ingredients, and can create Enchanted Faction Books which allow those infected by Mysterious Darkness to choose their faction.
The Mad Science Faction

Those delving into mad science deal in technology and insanity, throwing ethics to the side for the sake of discovery. Mad Scientist players start out normally enough, but quickly delve into constructing technology, experimenting with genetic mutations, gaining some terrifying lab assistants, and eventually creating metal servants with a talent for killing.
The Swamp Monster Faction

Swamp Monsters tend to be looked down upon by other monsters, as many of them go feral and live in the muck, but civilized tribes exist. Swamp Monsters do well with underwater combat and can work with the hidden power of swamps unlike all other beings. Their power lies in harnessing Swamp Essence and their environments to their advantage, and in gaining the respect of others of their own kind. Player Swamp Monsters will have fins and partially altered skins.
The Werewolf Faction

Players in this faction are first-generation Werewolves, unlike those turned by being bitten. This means that they gain more control over their beast forms over time, even gaining the ability to take their more powerful forms outside of the full moon. As players progress, they can become the alpha of their own pack and fight more powerful monsters while guarding their territory. Werewolves are immune to all supernatural bites and mutations.
The Vampire Faction

Players in this faction are first-generation Vampires, meaning that they have greater abilities than Vampires turned by being bitten. First-generation Vampires can better control their thirst, use blood and amulets to gain greater abilities, obtain followers, and eventually unlock an ability envied by many other monsters. However, they are more vulnerable than other monsters to gaining a bad reputation and will burn in the sun.
???

Sometimes, a player can find themselves seemingly unchanged after the Mysterious Darkness infection ends. But this is an illusion, and they will quickly discover that they have gained a new power and connection to the mysterious darkness itself, including the ability to wield it against enemies. No guidebook exists for this faction. Instead, guidance comes from within, perhaps from the Mysterious Darkness itself. Players won't be very powerful at first, but that will change as they progress. How far will you go, and how much do you want absolute power?
The Hunter's Guild

Players can join the Hunter’s Guild by visiting an office in savanna-like biomes. Then, players can gear up, craft protective items against supernatural bites and curses, and go on monster-slaying missions. The Guild will only accept ordinary humans with no supernatural infections.
Hunters can be traded with for protective items against monsters.
Reputation
All monster players are subject to the Reputation system. As monster players attack innocent beings, Reputation will drop, and eventually one to three skulls will appear in the lower left part of their screen, indicating a bad Reputation. These players can no longer trade with the Hunter’s Guild and will instead be attacked on sight. The worse a player’s Reputation, the more problems they’ll have with the Hunter’s Guild, who use crossbows and fire dangerous bolts.
A second group of monster hunters, the Society, will target all supernatural or monstrous players on sight, but only use swords, so they are less dangerous unless they spawn as a raid.

Since the monsters of this mod are traditional, werewolves, vampires, and zombies can also bite and infect players who are still human, even if the player is a Witch, Sorcerer, or Mad Scientist.
Only feral Werewolves and feral Vampires (found in the wild) attack players on sight. Those in villages are neutral and won’t attack unless provoked first. These attacks have a high chance of infection (configurable), while zombies have only a low (1%) chance of infecting players.
Players who become Vampires, Werewolves, or Zombies through bites won’t have an icon in the corner of their screen and won’t have the same progression or power as players turned directly by the Darkness.
A few different mutations can also result from a bad trade with a Mad Scientist or by encountering a lab accident. These conditions also have benefits and drawbacks, but all give the player a monstrous appearance.
All monstrous conditions have cures, which are covered in the Defense section.
ZOMBIFICATION
Zombie bites are fairly rare, but the infection takes only one Minecraft day to turn the player, making it very dangerous. Infection chances can be changed in the config. This infection can be stopped before the player zombifies by Cure Serum, which is purchased from Mad Scientists in desert labs or found at Hunter Offices in savanna-like regions.
An uncommon curse can also cause a human player to zombify upon death, unless that curse is removed. This can also be changed in the config.
Zombie players move slowly with a depleted hunger bar and limited intelligence. The Regeneration effect also does not work, although creatures classified as Undead will usually leave the player alone unless attacked first. Players will also have a bad reputation score.
Zombified players must consume the flesh of the living to heal, and must consume a special item dropped from slain humanoid victims to regain intelligence and movement speed.
Eating a Golden Apple while affected by Weakness will cure a zombified player, and so will the Undeath Cure Powder, which is purchased from Witches and Warlocks in plains villages.
LYCANTHROPY
Werewolf attacks have a high chance of infection. The player will not know if they are infected for some time after the attack, but will be alerted when the infection completes. It is possible to prevent infection right after an attack with a Distilled Silver Injection, which can be purchased from Hunters.
Players turned by being bitten will find themselves gradually overcome by their beastly nature over time, while players who become Werewolves directly from the Mysterious Darkness infection are first generation and more powerful.
All Werewolves transform during the full moon if they are in the Overworld and must hunt to satisfy their hunger.
Lycanthropy caused by bites can be cured with a Werewolf Cure Powder, purchased from a Witch or Warlock in a plains Witch village.
VAMPIRISM
Vampire bites always infect humans and may be fatal, as they cause blood loss. Vampires are found in Manors (located in densely forested areas) and in the wild, usually wearing black and red cloaks and hoods.
The player may also encounter Vampires created from Villagers and human entities who were bitten, though this is less common.
While Vampires in Manors will trade, they will attack if provoked. Vampires found in the wild will always attack players who still have a pulse, with a chance of biting and draining the player of blood. While non-humans can suffer from blood loss or die, human players will also become infected and begin to suffer from unnerving symptoms as they slowly turn.
Vampire players will have a blood bar on the lower right of the screen, and if it is depleted, the player will no longer be able to heal from injury. Players can hypnotize victims by sneaking and clicking on them before feeding.
Vampirism can be cured by the Vampire Cure Powder, purchased from Witches and Warlocks in plains villages.

Note: Not all of the mobs from Monstrous World are pictured here.
Vengeful Pumpkin

These living pumpkins were awakened by the Mysterious Darkness and seek revenge against those they think carved them. They carry shears and can inflict Pumpkin's Revenge, a dangerous curse that awakens ordinary pumpkins near the player.
Enhanced Zombies

Enhanced Zombies, Husks, and Drowneds will have glowing eyes and the ability to move much faster than ordinary zombies. They will also be able to open doors, due to their temporarily heightened intelligence. These overpowered zombies result when regular zombies consume the brains of living victims, and they will not burn in the sun, making them highly dangerous.
Spider Attack Changes
Spiders now have a chance of webbing the player when attacking. At first, players will be placed in spiderweb blocks, while subsequent attacks can lead to the player being trapped in webbing and ultimately poisoned to death. Dying in this way will place a Webbed Victim feature at the site of death. Players can escape by right-clicking with any Dagger or Knife.

Dreadful Watcher
A floating eye that casts Darkness on nearby players and has a small chance of inflicting Insanity, an effect that makes all those without Night Vision or Mental Fortitude fearful of the dark. This growing fear eventually causes death from fright if they remain in the dark for too long.
Evil Spirits

Evil Spirits (not pictured above) look like floating eyes, and they can possess living players. One type makes light sources go out around the possessed player, while another inflicts Levitation at random times. Possession is cleared by dying or using a Tome of Exorcism, which is found by breaking Dark Bookshelves.
Feral Werewolf

These feral Werewolves only spawn during full moon nights, with a rare boss version possible. They attack all living things except other Werewolves and can easily infect human players.
Feral Vampire

Feral Vampires will attack, hypnotize, and bite most players, draining their blood and infecting human players. After they feed, they will ignore their victim.
Will O The Wisp

This glowing, spinning light looks harmless, but Wisps are malicious spirits that can place nearby beings into a trance. Beings affected by Enchantment will quickly wander away, getting lost in a dreamlike state, if there is no Feral Goblin nearby.
Often, a Feral Goblin will accompany a Wisp and will play a magical flute if a nearby victim is Enchanted. Victims in range will then spin and dance to exhaustion, eventually dying. This makes Enchantment an extremely dangerous effect.
Feral Goblin

These monsters often accompany the Will O the Wisp, which they use to capture and kill victims. See the Wiki for more information.
Feral Swampmonster

These creatures lurk in deeper swamp waters and move quickly under the surface. When they attack, the victim sinks into the murk, unable to swim upward, dying from drowning or further attacks. They will only leave Swampmonster players alone and have caused many to disappear in swampy regions.
Feral Mountain Troll

This boss monster is the result of a formerly civilized Troll going bad, and dwells in the caves of mountainous regions with stolen loot and bones of its former victims. It is nearly impossible to kill directly and requires magic or trickery to defeat.
Giant Fly

The giant fly is an insect turned gigantic by the Mysterious Darkness and quickly attacks players from the air.

Defensive artifacts exist to help the player survive Monstrous World and to ward off attacks by dangerous monsters, as well as to cure curses and supernatural infections. However, these defenses cannot all be used at once, forcing the player to choose carefully. They are found by trading with Hunters, trading with Witches and Warlocks, by exploring and finding structures, and by opening Trick or Treat bags. Players can even make defensive artifacts depending on their faction.
For more information, see the Monstrous World Wiki Countermeasures page.

Monstrous World adds five new biomes, all of which capture the spirit of Halloween. These landscapes are thought to be the result of the Mysterious Darkness having a strange effect on the world as a whole. Four out of the five biomes are more dangerous than normal at night, spawning dangerous monsters at higher rates.
Autumn Delight

An autumn forest with plenty of beehives, pumpkins, dandelions, and abandoned corn farms. As a non-spooky biome, the Autumn Delight has normal mob spawns.
Civilized Goblin Villages are common in the Autumn Delight biome, which include chest loot, and civilized Goblins are willing to trade with players.
Although most Monstrous World mobs can spawn here, they do so at normal rates, and this biome is no more dangerous at night than normal biomes.
Deathly Forest

The Deathly Forest is a spooky biome made up of Ghostly Trees, Deathly Trees, and the occasional Pumpkin Tree. It features brown grass, some Monstrous Plants, and boulders made of mossy cobblestone. Deepslate Boulders are also common here. The Deathcatcher plant is more common here than in other biomes. The Deathly Forest tends to appear in colder regions of the world, but it does not snow or rain here.
Undead creatures are the most common type of spawn here, and Feral Vampires are also a hazard here, along with Feral Goblins, Will O the Wisps, Vengeful Pumpkins, Feral Werewolves, Evil Spirits, and other monsters.
Soul Clusters are another common danger in this biome, so watching your step to avoid falling into them is a must when traveling through!
Small Graveyards and Large Graveyards can also be found, and the Grave Soil within them can spawn zombies at night. Large Graveyards can contain loot.
Forsaken Lands

The Forsaken Lands are a dead, plains-like biome with brown grass, scattered boulders, dead bushes, and occasional monstrous plants. This biome is found where Plains biomes are most common.
Lone Pumpkin Lanterns can be found here, seemingly left by travelers, and Giant Pumpkins, Pumpkin Trees, and Deathly Trees are also found growing here. Scattered, abandoned Corn Farms are also present, providing small amounts of light, and abandoned Hay Bales and bundles of Dark Thatch may also be present.
Webbed Ruins are sometimes found here with loot inside the chest.
The Forsaken Lands are more dangerous at night than normal biomes, spawning Feral Vampires, Enhanced Zombies, Spiders, Evil Spirits, Vengeful Pumpkins, and other monsters at higher rates than normal.
Crimson Dread

The Crimson Dread is a dangerous forest found in temperate regions, often near birch forests, with red grass, surface fossils, Deathly Trees, and the Sanguinus Tree that only grows with the aid of the Blood Bulb plant. Blood Bulbs are a hazard and will feed on the blood of non-vampire, living entities that pass through them if they are not in their mature state. This can lead to significant blood loss if passing through a patch of them.
Surface fossils and Webbed Ruins are common here, and Warlock Hideouts with their valuable loot can also appear in this biome.
Cave Spiders can spawn in this biome, along with Vindicators and creatures from Monstrous World, at higher rates than normal. Feral Goblins and Will O the Wisps are a common danger, as are Feral Werewolves, Feral Vampires, and others.
Darkened Bookshelves also appear more commonly in this biome than in others, and the magical Tomes they can drop when broken make this biome worth exploring.
Murky Madness

The Murky Madness biome is often found in warmer regions, and is a thick, dark forest with black grass and soil that is a darker shade than normal. The black Murkwood Trees are very common here, but Deathly Trees and Pumpkin Trees can spawn as well.
Monstrous Plants are easy to find in this biome, as many types glow, making them stand out in the gloom.
Like other spooky biomes, Monstrous World's monsters spawn at higher rates here, and the low visibility makes it especially dangerous.
Vampire Manors can spawn in this biome, along with the Dark Forest. The Vampires in these manors can be traded with and pay well, but will attack if provoked.
Darkened Bookshelves and Warlock Hideouts can also be found in the Murky Madness.

Monstrous World offers many items, including magical ingredients, modded tools, charms, magical tomes, lore items, Precious Stones, and the Trick or Treat bag. Many items are usable by everyone, while others are only useful to certain monster factions or to Hunters.

The most interesting item is the Trick or Treat Bag.
These bags are found as loot in many structures and monster villages and can also be purchased from Witches and Warlocks.
Trick or Treat bags can grant magical treats, but not all of them are safe! They can also, more rarely, grant weapons, defensive artifacts, magical Tomes, cures for monstrous conditions, magical Powders, and decorations. They can even grant items useful to your specific faction!
But Trick or Treat bags can also deliver tricks, make dangerous monsters spawn near the player, drop disappointing loot, and place curses on the player, which may need the Tome of Curse Breaking to remove.

Precious Stones
Most Precious Stones are based on real-life stones, and these ores appear in various parts of the world. Goblin Villages have books about how to find each ore.
These Precious Stones are magical and have many uses, including currency, magical ingredients, and more. They can be crafted into attractive storage blocks, which have minor magical properties.

Lore Items
Lore items are books and notes found throughout the world and include faction guidebooks. As there are many lore items to be discovered, Lore Binders exist to store them. Basic Lore Binders can be found by breaking Dark Bookshelves, and faction-specific Lore Binders can be crafted by placing a regular Lore Binder in a crafting grid with a faction guidebook. Neither item is consumed in this recipe.
Decorative Blocks
Monstrous World adds many decoration blocks which can be found in the world, including Skull Lamps, Pumpkin Lanterns, Gourds, the Straw Trail, Barricading Boards, Skull Bricks, and more! All are made to add to the Halloween vibes of Monstrous World, and crafting recipes for most of these blocks can be found in JEI.
Other Blocks and Items
Some items and blocks are faction-specific, such as Troll-made alloys and Swamp Crystal items, and are beyond the scope of this description. More details about these items are found in faction guidebooks.

Configuration is available for mob spawns, feature spawns, infection chances, and curse chances. Monster factions can also be enabled or disabled for compatibility with other mods/modpacks.
WARNING: The configuration file contains spoilers for features meant to be surprises, as does the Monstrous World Wiki.

FAQ
Q: Can I add this mod to a modpack?
A: Yes, so long as you link back to this page and give credit.
Q: Can you add (insert monster) faction to this mod?
A: Possibly, if it fits with the theme of Halloween and traditional monsters. Also, the monster you're asking for might already be in the mod.
Q: Will other versions be coming?
A: More versions for newer Minecraft versions are planned, as well as content updates!
Q: Is there a wiki for this mod?
A: Yes. Monstrous World Wiki. (Warning: Spoilers!) I still recommend diving in and discovering the mod for yourself.
Q: What possessed you to make all of this?
A: I started this project because I love Halloween and wanted to play in a world with those vibes. I’ve spent over three years putting all this together, and the past year making this final version of the mod. Working on this project has also been a source of stress relief.
Q: Is this compatible with other mods?
A: An in-game configuration (Warning: Spoilers!) is available from the Mods list menu, which can control things such as mob spawn chances, feature spawns, allowed monster factions, and some mechanics. The starting lore is also configurable.
Ingots, logs, ores, etc. are interchangeable with those of other mods. Normal recipes are compatible with JEI, and the mod adds recipe helpers for custom crafting stations.
