About this project
What does Tale of Kingdoms: The Shattered Crown add?
Tale of Kingdoms: a full RPG inside Minecraft
This is SamB440's classic Tale of Kingdoms, revived for Minecraft 26.2 (Fabric). It turns survival into a long role-playing campaign. You have a name, a Guild to prove yourself to, gold to earn, magic to learn and a kingdom of your own to build.
Requires: Fabric Loader, Fabric API and owo-lib.
HIGHLY Recommended:
Black's MCM. It puts every installed mod in one list, so you can switch Tale of Kingdoms on and off while you play (no restart, your progress waits for you) and open the Tale of Kingdoms settings (smooth models, compass style and more) from one screen.
Read this first: do NOT press "Fix the Guild" unless your castle is damaged
The Guild Master's menu has a button named "Fix the Guild". Many players press it because they think it is the next step of the game. It is not.
- "Fix the Guild" only repairs damage that the Guild castle has taken. It puts the castle back the way it was.
- It costs 64 logs and 3000 gold coins, and nothing else in your world changes.
- Use it only if the castle is broken, for example after a creeper or a griefer.
- To build your own city, talk to the City Builder and the Survivor. Both stand downstairs in the castle. See "How to play" below.
The game shows this warning before it takes your coins.

Features
A story to follow
- The Shattered Crown. A main questline of 105 quests in 7 chapters. It starts at the Guild castle, takes you to every kingdom from the nearest outward, and ends with a night siege of your castle led by the Lich. Win it to earn the High Crown, 1000 coins and the title "Crownbearer".
- Quests everywhere. The people of the castle, the towns and your own kingdom offer hunts, deliveries, escorts, exploration and gateway raids. Gold scales with the effort: tougher kills, more valuable deliveries and longer trips pay more.
- Quest sites. When a quest names a place, a camp, crypt, ruin, wreck or nest appears there, marked on the compass and the map.
- Journal and tracker. Accept as many quests as you like and pin up to three to the on-screen tracker. A "!" shows over people with a quest for you, and a "?" over the person to hand a finished quest to.
- King Black of Highcrest. A king who gives eight hard quests. Earn his favour and he joins you as a follower. Anger him and he is the hardest fight in the mod, with a demon form when he is close to defeat.
A living world
- Fifteen towns stand around the Guild castle. Five are major cities, each with its own castle and king. Hamlets and dragon nests are scattered across the wild, and roads link them.
- Living citizens. Townsfolk work, walk the streets, talk, shop at the stalls and visit the tavern in the evening. Every town with a tavern has an innkeeper who sells a bed and a hot meal.
- A realm map (M) shows every town, hamlet, dragon nest, quest target, Reficule gateway, your kingdom and the place you last died. A compass across the top of the screen points to the places near you, in four styles.
- A world that heals. A lost city disappears once every survivor is rescued, and a gateway disappears once it is cleared.
Your own kingdom
- Build it. At 1500 worthiness the City Builder follows you to a place of your choice and raises your kingdom there.
- Grow it. Add houses, shops and a barracks. Your people pay tax every in-game hour, and at tier 3 the kingdom gets a curtain wall with towers. Defend it from Reficule raids for a reward in gold.
- Put people to work. Give a townsperson an axe for a lumber worker or a pickaxe for a quarry worker. Workers bring back logs and ores, and take tools and armour from your hand.
- Upgrade the Guild castle in three stages, with walls, a gatehouse and a road to your kingdom.
Magic
- 30 spells, unlocked as you level from 5 to 80, from Firebolt and Healing Hands to Meteor, Dragon's Breath, Chain Lightning, Winter's Grasp, Earthquake, Tempest and Rally the Host. Each new tier lets you choose one spell out of three, and the choice is final.
- A Spellbook in your off hand, a mana bar above your hunger bar, and two skills: Wisdom for mana and Intelligence for spell damage.
Monsters, gear and mounts
- New monsters. The Barrow Wight, packs of Werewolves, the Hill Troll boss and the rare Lich, along with the Reficule raiders and their mages and guardians. All of them drop gold and parts to sell.
- Armour and robes. Steel, Reficule Plate, Kingsguard (for rulers of a kingdom), Dragon Bone and the High Crown, plus Apprentice and Archmage Robes for spellcasters. Dragon bones come from dragons and their nests.
- Unicorns and pegasi. Rare wild mounts to tame. Some unicorns have a rainbow mane. Saddle a tamed pegasus to fly: jump to take off and look down to dive.
- Smooth models. Realistic, hand-sculpted animals and monsters, sculpted armour, and 3D held tools and weapons (Tale of Kingdoms gear included). You can turn them off in the config.
Gold, shops and followers
- Shops. The Blacksmith, Food Shop, Block Shop and General Store have new stock every day, and every item in the game has a price. Click an item to buy or sell one, or shift-click to trade the whole stack.
- Followers. Hire knights, archers and hunters who fight at your side, follow you through dimensions and avoid deadly falls. Their kills count as yours.
- Skills. Strength, Agility, Endurance, Crit, Crit Chance, Evasion, Luck, Intelligence and Wisdom level up as you play.
- Player trading. Trade items and gold with other players in a safe trade window.
How to play
- Start a new world. The people ask what they shall call you. Choose a name and the Guild castle appears near your spawn point.
- Sign the contract. Find the Guild Master upstairs in the castle and press "Sign up contract!". You earn nothing before you sign.
- Follow the story. Talk to the Guild Captain to begin The Shattered Crown. Each quest is offered by the person you finished the last one with. To skip the story with the Blacksmith and go straight to his shop, shift-click him.
- Earn worthiness. Worthiness is your progress, and the red bar in the Guild Master's menu shows it. Each hostile mob you kill gives 2, and animals give nothing. Reficules give 5 to 8, worth double on Normal and triple on Hard. Kills by your followers count as yours. Quests give 25, 40 or 60. Each rescued survivor gives 40.
- Earn gold. Kills and quests pay gold coins. Store them with the Banker, spend them at the shops and hire hunters from the Guild Master. The General Store buys any item you bring it.
- Take quests. The Alchemist, Sergeant, Quartermaster and Archivist in the castle offer quests on most days. You can accept as many quests as you like and pin up to three to the quest tracker on the right of the screen. Press J to open the journal, where you can pin, unpin or abandon them.
- Use magic. Hold the Spellbook in your off hand. Press R to cast, Z for the next spell and B to open the Spellbook. See "How to use magic" below.
- Rescue the survivors. A lost city lies within 800 blocks of the castle. The compass at the top of the screen points to it, and chat shows its location when you join. Talk to each lost villager and lead them back to the castle. Then talk to the Survivor downstairs, who gives each of them a room.
- Defend the Guild. At 750 worthiness the Reficules attack the castle. Kill them all. Then talk to the Guild Master Defender with a full stack of 64 logs in your inventory, and the Guild is rebuilt. This step costs no gold.
- Build your kingdom. At 1500 worthiness, talk to the City Builder downstairs. The City Builder then follows you. Walk at least 500 blocks away from the castle, talk to the City Builder again and choose "BUILD YOUR KINGDOM!". Building clears the land around that spot, so choose an empty place.
- Grow your kingdom. Give the City Builder logs and cobblestone, then build houses, shops and a barracks. Your people pay tax every in-game hour. At tier 3 the kingdom gets its curtain wall. Reficules raid the kingdom every 2 to 4 days while you are near it. Win the fight and you are paid in gold.
- Upgrade the castle. Press "Upgrade Castle" in the Guild Master's menu. There are three stages that cost 20,000, 40,000 and 80,000 gold plus building materials, and the button shows the full price. Stages 2 and 3 need a tier 3 kingdom. The gates stay closed for three in-game days while the masons work.
- Explore. Press M to open the realm map. The compass shows towns, villages and dragon nests within 500 blocks. Highcrest, the city of King Black, lies about 1000 blocks east of the Guild castle.
How to use magic
- You get a Spellbook when you join the world. If you lose it, you get a new one the next time you join or respawn.
- Hold the Spellbook in your off hand. Spells do not work without it.
- Press R to cast and Z to change to the next spell. Press B to open the Spellbook.
- You know Firebolt, Healing Hands and Mage Light from the start. You learn a new spell at XP levels 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70 and 80. Each time you choose one spell out of three, and the choice is final.
- The mana bar sits above your hunger bar. Mana comes back over time. The Wisdom skill gives you more mana and faster regeneration, and the Intelligence skill makes your spells hit harder. Casting trains Intelligence.
- Spells only hit hostile mobs. They never hurt villagers or your followers.
Key bindings (default keys)

- J: open the quest journal, where you pin, unpin and abandon quests.
- M: open the realm map.
- K: open the start screen again, if you closed it before you chose a name.
- In a shop: click an item to trade one, shift-click to trade the stack.

Play it with friends
The mod works in singleplayer, over "Open to LAN" and on dedicated servers. Every player has their own gold, worthiness and progress, and all Guild NPCs work for every player, not only the host.
Tips
- Always open a Tale of Kingdoms world with the mod installed. Without the mod, Minecraft deletes the mod's NPCs from the save.
- Back up your world before you update. Each version loads worlds from the versions before it, and your kingdom, coins, towns and chests are kept.
- The new text is in English only for now.
- Found a bug? Leave a comment with your log and I will look at it.
The full list of changes for each version is in the changelog of its file in the Files tab.
All credit for the original mod goes to SamB440 and the Convallyria team. This revival ports, repairs and extends it for modern Minecraft.
Donations are never required, but they help me keep reviving mods like this one. If you would like to support the work, see my Patreon: https://patreon.com/123black. Sharing the mod with friends helps just as much.
