About this project

What does Overgrown Vegetation add?

*AI is used for coding.

The Carboniferous Period contributed enormously to the rise of our civilization. Vast plant life flourished and left behind enormous coal deposits. Oxygen levels exceeded 30%, giant insects roamed the land, and flying creatures truly took to the skies for the first time...
Yet the true forms and behaviors of Carboniferous plants and animals are still largely unknown, and many mysteries remain.

  • What if the plants of that era could multiply so overwhelmingly, so catastrophically, that they covered the entire planet and dominated its environment?
  • What if, after flourishing for millions of years, these plants had developed an intelligence like our own?
  • What if they came back in the present day to take back control of the Earth?

This infection mod was born from those daydreams.

In this mod, ancient plants join forces to bring the Earth back under their rule. They study modern creatures and plants, then make full use of them to expand their territory.

  1. Awakening: It all begins when a massive fissure tears open somewhere in the world. Spores burst violently from the fissure and quickly take root in the surrounding land.
  2. Invasion: They take over the bodies of nearby animals and slowly spread their domain outward from the fissure. Over time, they absorb modern plants and animals and learn from them.
  3. Evolution and Conquest: Using vines, moss and trees, they try to recreate their ancient ecosystem while creating new forms of life. Then they begin breeding highly aggressive creatures designed specifically to eliminate you. You are the greatest obstacle to their expansion.

Of course, you’re not defenseless. Do your own research, build devices that stop the spread of spores, and turn their own creations against them to hold back the invasion!
...Or you could abandon humanity and join their side.

[Note: This mod is currently in development!]

  • Work in progress: Features are still very limited. There is no comprehensive guide yet, and difficulty has not been balanced. The mod is still at the stage of adding features one by one on top of the original concept, so survival may feel very unfair, or too easy.
  • Unfinished assets: Many mob and block textures and models are unfinished. They will be properly added over time.
  • Release plan: A full release is planned once development reaches the Phase 7 mid-boss fight and the mod is fully playable. Until then, it will stay in alpha.

Lore

About 300 million years ago, there was an age when giant ferns and tree-like plants covered the land. But as the Earth cooled, they died out. Their immense remains and spores were buried deep underground. Over long ages, they turned into the substance that would one day support civilization.

Yet one single spore sprouted in a strange space. It was dim there. The only light came from glowing rocks growing far overhead. Every root and spore that spread from that one plant was connected, and as a single consciousness, they spent two hundred million years covering the whole space.

In a world without enemies, the plants unconsciously recreated their old home, the vegetation of the Carboniferous, and built the world of the past anew. In time, that work became a power inside them: the power to create new plants.

The plants learned many things:

  • The world has ley lines, flows of energy running through it.
  • To grow in such an extreme environment, they had developed organs that draw energy from the ley lines.
  • That power had given them intelligence.
  • This space was an underground world, far deeper than the surface.

Knowing this, the plants turned their thoughts to the surface, the world where their kin had once flourished at the height of their glory. That world, they believed, was rightfully theirs.

After so many hundreds of millions of years, the surface must now have creatures that had gained intelligence just as they had. Expecting to fight them, the plants began to prepare. First, they stored up huge amounts of energy and created spores that could sprout in any environment. Next, they tried to create beings that could move. But for plants that had never known movement, this was an enormous challenge. After long trial and error, they found their answer: borrowing the bodies of surface creatures. In other words, parasitism.

The main body also gave independent judgment to part of the collective consciousness. This created higher beings that would lead the war on the surface.

Then, over tens of millions of years, the roots and spores crept slowly toward the surface along the ley lines. They hid in the coal seams where the remains of their kin lay sleeping. On the day their preparations were complete, the plants split the earth open like sprouting seeds and began their invasion of the surface
