About this project
What does Pixel TV add?
Pixel TV
Bring movie nights, livestreams, and a little background entertainment into your Minecraft builds.
Pixel TV adds modular, wall-mounted screens that play YouTube videos and direct media streams—with chunky pixel visuals, positional audio, and shared multiplayer playback.
Build your screen
Start with a cozy 3×2 TV, or join more panels into a bigger display. Each panel is just one voxel thick, making it easy to fit a screen into your living room, multiplayer lounge, or custom cinema.
Right-click any panel, paste a supported link, and press Play.
Features
Modular screens: Arrange panels into a filled rectangle, up to 16×16 blocks.
Adjustable resolution: Choose 16, 32, or 64 pixels per block. A standard 3×2 screen runs at 48×32 pixels.
Adjustable frame rate: Pick 5, 10, or 15 FPS.
YouTube and direct media: Play YouTube videos and livestreams, plus supported HTTP(S) media links such as MP4, MKV, and HLS.
Positional audio: Sound fades with distance and pans as you move around the TV.
Multiplayer playback: Watch the same broadcast together, including when joining after playback has started.
Local source links: Your original media URL stays on the broadcasting client and is not sent to the server or other viewers.
How multiplayer works
The player who starts playback downloads and decodes the source. Their client sends the reduced video and audio to the server, which relays it to nearby viewers.
Only the broadcaster needs playback tools. Other players receive the shared media without opening the original link or decoding the source themselves. The broadcaster must remain connected for playback to continue.
Requirements
Minecraft Java Edition 1.20.1
Fabric Loader 0.16.9 or newer
Fabric API
Pixel TV installed on the server and every participating client
FFmpeg on broadcasting clients
yt-dlp and Deno for YouTube playback
A Windows playback-tool installer is included with the download package. The server and viewers do not need these external tools.
Prototype notes
Pixel TV is an early release. Larger screens and higher resolutions use more bandwidth, and synchronization can be affected by client performance or network conditions. Screens are limited to 65,536 total pixels.
Media links must be accessible to the broadcaster. Expired links, authentication restrictions, and DRM-protected services are not bypassed. Seeking, subtitles, playlists, and playback resume are not currently supported.
Audio uses the operating system’s default sound output and respects Minecraft’s Master and Jukebox/Note Blocks volume settings. Sound-occlusion and reverb mod integration is not currently available.
Tested on Windows with Fabric 1.20.1.
