Quick answer
Which Smooth Progression release should I use?
Smooth Progression smooth_progression-1.0.4-1.20.1.jar targets 1.20.1 with Fabric. The project page does not say whether this file belongs on the client, dedicated server, or both. All 9 required mods have matching files.
Where it goes
Is Smooth Progression required on the client, server, or both?
The project page does not say whether this file belongs on the client, dedicated server, or both.
The source does not explicitly classify this release as client-only or server-only.
What else does Smooth Progression smooth_progression-1.0.4-1.20.1.jar need?
smooth_progression-1.0.4-1.20.1.jar. Change the file and its required mods may change too.
Install Pufferfish's Skills [Fabric & Forge & NeoForge], Smooth Classes, Fabric API, Spell Engine and 5 more first. We found matching files for this game-version and loader setup. 7 come through another mod in the chain.
7 extra mods were pulled in by other dependencies. Indented rows show who needs each one. We only count dependency files that match this setup. A file for another loader does not fill the gap.

About this project
What does Smooth Progression add?
Smooth Progression
What if Minecraft had a proper RPG progression system?
Not just collecting vanilla experience and enchanting your gear, but actually growing stronger as you explore, fight, level up, and develop your character.
That's where Smooth Progression comes in.
Smooth Progression adds a dedicated RPG-style character level, custom experience system, skill-point progression, scalable enemies, elites, boss progression, and direct integration with Smooth Classes.
Kill things. Get stronger. Walk farther away from spawn. Discover that the local wildlife has also been going to the gym.
Simple enough.
Features
Level Up Your Adventure
Defeat enemies, complete activities, earn experience, and progress through a dedicated character-leveling system.
Your character level is separate from vanilla enchantment XP and represents your overall progression through the world.
Every level grants skill points that feed directly into Smooth Classes.
The progression flow is:
Base Skill Tree → Selected Class → Ascendancy
So character levels are not just a number sitting in the corner pretending to be important.
They actually fund your build.
Built for Smooth Classes
Smooth Progression is now directly integrated with Smooth Classes.
Your level-up points automatically move through the currently active progression stage:
- Base Tree
- Your selected class
- Ascendancy
Supported Smooth Classes specialisations include:
- Avenger
- Foreigner
- Caster
- Berserker
- Archer
- Assassin
- Saber
- Ruler
- Rider
- Lancer
Once one stage is completed, future level-up points continue into the next valid stage.
A Little Celebration for Every Level
Leveling up should feel rewarding.
Smooth Progression displays a Minecraft-style advancement toast showing your newly reached level, complete with the familiar challenge sound.
No unnecessary chat wall.
Just:
ding
Number bigger.
Brain happy.
Enemies That Grow With Your Journey
The world scales alongside your progression.
Enemy levels can be influenced by exploration distance and dimension, meaning travelling deeper into the world becomes increasingly dangerous.
Features include:
- Distance-based mob levels
- Dimension-based scaling
- Elite enemy encounters
- Scaled enemy health
- Scaled combat attributes
- Progression-aware experience rewards
The farther you travel, the stronger the world becomes.
So yes, walking 8,000 blocks away from home with three baked potatoes and confidence may eventually become a tactical error.
Elite Enemies
Some enemies can appear as Elite variants with significantly increased combat power.
Elites are designed to create occasional high-threat encounters rather than turning every Zombie into a Dark Souls boss.
Probably.
Configuration options allow modpack creators to tune their frequency and scaling.
Bosses Worth Preparing For
Boss encounters use their own progression settings.
Bosses can have:
- Configurable progression levels
- Increased health
- Level-based combat scaling
- Experience rewards
- Penalties for fighting them while heavily underleveled
You can challenge powerful bosses early.
Minecraft will not stop you.
The boss may have a different opinion.
Exploration Actually Matters
Smooth Progression is designed around RPG-style worlds where moving outward should feel meaningful.
Instead of every region remaining equally dangerous forever, progression can increase as players travel farther from the world's origin and enter more dangerous dimensions.
This works especially well in large exploration-focused modpacks.
Like Smooth Odyssey.
Which is convenient.
Very convenient.
Made for Modpacks
Smooth Progression includes configurable systems intended for RPG and adventure modpacks.
You can tune progression without rewriting the entire mod.
Configuration includes systems such as:
- Character XP progression
- Mob level scaling
- Distance scaling
- Dimension scaling
- Elite enemies
- Boss progression
- Combat scaling
- Experience rewards
Want a relatively relaxed RPG progression?
You can do that.
Want leaving spawn to eventually feel like entering unpaid overtime?
Also possible.
Smooth Classes Progression
Smooth Progression uses Puffish Skills as the underlying skill-tree framework and Smooth Classes as the actual class system.
Level-up points are awarded to the currently valid Smooth Classes category.
The intended progression is:
Character Levels
↓
Smooth Classes Base Tree
↓
Selected Class
↓
Ascendancy
Smooth Progression preserves its own skill-point source so your level-earned points remain managed separately from other possible Puffish Skills point sources.
Requirements
Smooth Progression is designed for:
Minecraft 1.20.1 — Fabric
Required
- Fabric API
- Puffish Skills
- Smooth Classes
Smooth Classes has its own required combat / spell dependencies, so make sure you install the requirements listed on the Smooth Classes project page as well.
Configuration
Smooth Progression uses configuration files to let modpack creators tune the RPG experience.
Important configuration files include:
mob_scaling.json
Controls systems such as:
- Mob levels
- Distance scaling
- Dimension scaling
- Elite encounters
- Combat attributes
boss_scaling.json
Controls systems such as:
- Boss progression levels
- Health scaling
- Combat penalties
- Experience rewards
Progression XP Configuration
Character XP requirements and progression behaviour can also be adjusted to suit the pacing of your modpack.
Whether your adventure lasts a weekend or three months and permanently alters your sleep schedule is therefore partially your decision.
Commands
Smooth Progression provides commands for checking and administrating progression.
Examples include:
/sp level
/sp xp
Additional administrator/debug commands are available for testing level progression and Smooth Classes skill categories.
These are particularly useful when developing modpacks.
Or when you absolutely do not feel like killing another 700 Zombies just to test one node.
Made for Smooth Odyssey
Smooth Progression was originally created for my modpack, Smooth Odyssey, an RPG-inspired Minecraft adventure built around exploration, progression, classes, combat, and character development.
I wanted progression to make every adventure feel meaningful instead of simply watching vanilla XP numbers pile up.
Smooth Classes eventually became the dedicated class system for that same ecosystem.
So now the Smooth family looks something like:
Smooth Progression — levels, XP and world progression
Smooth Classes — classes, skill trees and abilities
Smooth Odyssey — the place where I throw everything together and hope my RAM forgives me
Will future mods also have Smooth in their names?
At this point I think legally they have to.
Maybe because Fabric is smooth? :3
Compatibility
- Minecraft: 1.20.1
- Mod Loader: Fabric
- Environment: Client & Server
- Smooth Classes: Required
Designed primarily for RPG, combat, magic, exploration, and progression-focused modpacks.
Feedback & Bug Reports
Found a bug, have a balancing suggestion, or somehow created an enemy with enough health to qualify as real estate?
Feel free to report it through the project's issue tracker.
Useful reports include:

- Smooth Classes version
- Relevant dependency versions

Have fun.
And remember:
If an enemy is too strong, technically you can always walk back toward spawn.
