About this project
What does Delta Force Soundprint add?
Soundprint Mod – Tactical Acoustic Awareness for Minecraft
Inspired by Delta Force: Hawk Ops, now fully optimised with a digital compass and projectile detection
The Soundprint Mod brings a sophisticated sound‑localisation system to Minecraft, turning every footstep, attack, and projectile into a visual clue – but only when the source is hidden from direct sight. Designed for PvP, stealth, and cooperative play, it adds a layer of tactical awareness that rewards listening and quick reflexes.
Core Detection Logic
The mod continuously scans all entities within a 50‑block radius. A sound‑print indicator appears only if a solid block completely obstructs the line‑of‑sight between the player and the source – if you can see the target, no hint is given. This occlusion‑based rule forces players to rely on sound for threats behind walls, around corners, or in dense foliage. Sneaking reduces the effective detection range by half (configurable), encouraging stealthy approaches. Colours convey urgency: neutral sounds appear in a calm white/blue tone, but the moment a source attacks – swinging a sword, shooting a bow, or triggering an explosion – the indicator instantly turns bright red with a subtle pulse. Vertical awareness is also built in: when the source is within 3 blocks above or below, small up or down arrows (↑/↓) appear next to the indicator.
Revamped Compass and Top‑Bar HUD
Version 1.3.0 introduces a completely redesigned heads‑up display. The compass now features crisp numeric degree ticks (every 30°) alongside N/S/E/W markers, rendered via a pre‑baked texture cache that scrolls smoothly with the player’s Yaw rotation – all without per‑frame text rendering. All indicators are fixed along the horizontal centre of the screen’s top edge. Their horizontal position is dynamically mapped to the source’s bearing relative to your view: front‑centre for directly ahead, shifting left or right as you turn. For sounds behind you, the indicator is replaced by a small left or right arrow (←/→) at the edge of the bar, which disappears instantly the moment you face the source – a seamless “face‑to‑reveal” transition that feels natural and precise.
Projectile Attack Soundprints
A major new feature in this update: projectiles – arrows, fireballs, snowballs, and throwable items – now trigger attack soundprints. When a projectile is launched toward you, it appears as a red indicator, giving you an early warning of incoming threats even before they hit.
Performance Optimisation
Under the hood, the mod has been heavily optimised. All HUD elements are batched into minimal draw calls using a pre‑baked texture for the compass, while sound‑print icons and arrows are drawn from a sprite sheet via a single BufferBuilder submission – reducing per‑frame GPU overhead to just 2–3 draw calls. Angle calculations are cached and updated every 2 ticks to save CPU, and visible indicators are capped (default 8) with priority given to closest or hostile sources. The result: a smooth, responsive experience even on modest hardware.
Multiplayer, Customisation, and Compatibility
All logic runs server‑side to ensure fairness, with client‑side rendering synchronised via lightweight packets. A comprehensive config file (soundprint-client.toml) lets players adjust compass height, width ratio, number step, indicator scale, colours, and more. The mod is lightweight, works alongside other HUD mods, and supports both Forge for Minecraft 1.20.1.
Conclusion
The Soundprint Mod transforms auditory cues into a strategic asset. With its occlusion‑based detection, dynamic colour coding, projectile awareness, digital compass, and top‑bar interface, it offers a refined, performance‑friendly acoustic intelligence system that faithfully recreates the tactical depth of Delta Force. Listen carefully – every sound tells a story, and now you can read it instantly. Additionally, a game rule has been added to hide player name tags, controlled via /gamerule Nametag_Visibility true/false and enabled by default. An unbound keybind has also been added that can enable locking onto entity heads.
