About this project
What does Oath Ledger add?
A lightweight, highly customizable progression mod designed with modpacks in mind.
Oath Ledger gives your survival adventure a simple long-term goal: decipher a mysterious book, find and defeat the creatures described in its pages, and earn the freedom to fly. It brings a small, self-contained progression system to your world through two items—the Oath Ledger and the Creative Flight Core.
A mysterious book at the start of your journey
When you first join a world with the mod installed, you receive an Oath Ledger in the top-left slot of your main inventory. Open it to discover a collection of cryptic hints pointing toward creatures you must defeat.
If that slot is occupied, its contents are moved to another available slot. If your inventory is full, delivery waits until space becomes available.
Each target page shows the creature's name at the top, followed by a cryptic hint beginning with ‘Please defeat [name].’ Below the hint, a rotating 3D model previews the creature using its registered entity ID and installed renderer. The hint still leaves you to work out where to find or how to summon your target.
Use the page buttons or left/right arrow keys to browse entries. Long hints can be scrolled. Completed entries keep their models and show crossed-out text. Some modded creatures require special rendering conditions; if a preview cannot be displayed, the page keeps its text and shows a model-unavailable message.
Watch your progress unfold
When a matching target you have damaged dies, its clue is crossed out and grayed out. The opening page keeps track of your completed objectives, so you can check your progress at a glance.
Your progress is personal and persists through death and rejoining the world. In multiplayer, you can work together: every player who deals actual damage to the same creature receives credit for their matching oath entries when it dies. Melee attacks and player-owned projectiles count, and you do not need to land the final blow. There is no minimum damage percentage or distance requirement at the time of death.
Bystanders, canceled attacks, and attacks that deal no damage do not receive credit. If a creature dies to environmental damage after you have damaged it, your participation still counts. Each player's own target list and optional custom-name requirements determine which entries are completed.
Participation records survive creature saves and chunk reloads. If you are offline when the creature dies, your completion is saved and applied when you next log in. Each player still earns their own Creative Flight Core only once, after completing all of their objectives.
The default ledger contains six challenges featuring creatures from vanilla Minecraft. You can complete them in any order.
The ledger behaves like an ordinary item: you can move it, drop it, store it in a chest, or keep multiple copies. It follows normal death-drop rules and is never automatically replaced or removed. Your progress belongs to your character, so losing the book does not reset your hunt, and you do not have to carry it for kills to count.
Craft another ledger
Combine one vanilla book + one log in any arrangement to craft one Oath Ledger. This shapeless recipe works in both the inventory crafting grid and a crafting table, using items in the minecraft:logs tag, including stripped logs and Nether stems.
Open a newly crafted or transferred ledger to display your own saved progress. A book taken from another player does not transfer their completed objectives or rewards.
Earn the Creative Flight Core
Complete every entry to receive one soulbound Creative Flight Core. Your Oath Ledger stays with you as a record of your completed hunt, with its clues crossed out. Opening or crafting more ledgers does not grant additional cores.
If no inventory space is available when a reward or a core returned after death is due, delivery waits until space becomes available.
Keep the core in your inventory to enable creative-style flight while remaining in Survival mode. Double-tap jump to take off and use the usual creative flight controls to explore, travel, and build from above.
- No fuel, charging, or durability management.
- No need to hold the core in your hand.
- Flight remains available while the core is in your player inventory.
- The core cannot be dropped with the normal drop action and is returned after death.
The reward grants flight, not Creative mode: it does not give you unlimited blocks or creative-mode invulnerability.
Customize the hunt
Modpack creators and server owners can change the target list in config/oathledger-common.toml. Use entity IDs to add creatures from installed mods and write your own cryptic clues, allowing the ledger to guide players toward the encounters that matter in your pack.
For a dedicated server, edit the server's configuration. Customization covers the hunt's targets, clues, and optional custom-name requirements; the completion reward is the Creative Flight Core.
Each entry uses the following format:
entity_id|display name|cryptic clue|optional exact custom name
The display-name field supplies the page heading, defeat instruction, and completion message. The entity ID selects the creature model. The optional custom-name field restricts a target to a creature with that exact custom name; leave it out to accept any individual of the specified entity type.
Target lists support 1–90 entries. Each player's list is saved when they first join, so later configuration changes do not rewrite existing players' ledgers. Set up your target list before players begin their adventure. Any mod whose creatures you reference must be installed.
Languages
Built-in text and default clues support English, Simplified Chinese, and Japanese, following the player's Minecraft language selection. Custom clues are displayed as written; resource-pack authors can use translation keys prefixed with @ to provide localized custom text.
