About this project

What does Zombie Apocalypse-ZA add?

Zombie Apocalypse-ZA

Zombie Apocalypse-ZA is a survival overhaul for Minecraft 1.20.1 built around intelligent infected, persistent hordes, reactive world simulation, injuries, fortifications, resource management and large-scale zombie encounters.

This is not simply a mod that increases zombie spawns.

The goal is to make the apocalypse feel alive.

Gunshots attract attention. Injured survivors leave traces. Infected can remember where they last saw you. Hordes move through the world instead of existing only around the player. Clearing an area can temporarily reduce local infected activity, while careless exploration can turn a quiet region into a major threat.

Every encounter is meant to create consequences.

Quick Information

Minecraft: 1.20.1

Mod Loader: Forge 47+

Java: Java 17

Required Dependency: TaCZ 1.1.8+, PlayerAnimator

Environment: Client and Server

Zombie Apocalypse-ZA is designed primarily around survival gameplay and works especially well alongside weapon, vehicle and world-generation mods.

A Reactive Zombie Apocalypse

The infected are designed around more than simple line-of-sight chasing.

They can react to:

  • Gunshots

  • Suppressed gunfire

  • Nearby combat

  • Movement and disturbances

  • Blood and survivor traces

  • Shared aggression from other infected

  • Screamer alerts

  • Last known player positions

Breaking visual contact does not always end a pursuit.

An infected that genuinely saw you may continue searching around your last known position for a limited period of time.

Doors, corners and buildings can help you escape, but they do not instantly erase the infected's memory.

Multiple Infected Types

The apocalypse contains several infected classes with different behaviors, strengths and weaknesses.

Walker

The most common infected.

Walkers are slow individually but become extremely dangerous in groups. They form the backbone of most hordes and can overwhelm poorly defended survivors through numbers.

Runner

Fast and aggressive infected capable of rapidly closing distance.

Runners are especially dangerous in open terrain and during chaotic encounters where the player has little time to react.

Screamer

A dangerous support infected capable of drawing additional infected toward a survivor's location.

Allowing a Screamer to remain active can quickly transform a manageable encounter into a much larger fight.

Brute

Large, durable infected designed to break defensive positions.

Brutes are particularly dangerous around fortified locations and can pressure players who rely too heavily on static defenses.

Lurker

An infected built around ambush behavior.

Lurkers are more dangerous in confined locations, buildings and areas where visibility is limited.

Tracker

A specialized infected capable of following survivor traces and blood.

Running away while injured may not always be enough.

Armored Infected

Former survivors or infected individuals protected by equipment that significantly increases their durability.

They require more careful target selection and ammunition management than ordinary infected.

Persistent Hordes

Hordes are not simply random groups spawned directly beside the player.

Zombie Apocalypse-ZA includes persistent horde systems that allow groups of infected to exist and move through the world.

Hordes can:

  • Travel between areas

  • React to major sources of noise

  • Move toward active locations

  • Persist beyond immediate player encounters

  • Become part of larger regional threats

A gunfight that seems safe now may attract something much larger later.

Regional Infected Population

The world maintains regional infected activity rather than treating every area identically.

Repeatedly clearing infected from the same region can temporarily suppress new local spawns.

This means defending and cleaning an area has an actual effect on the surrounding world.

However, suppression is temporary.

Hordes, surviving infected and activity from neighboring regions can eventually threaten cleared territory again.

Sound Matters

Noise is one of the most important parts of survival.

Different events generate different amounts of attention.

Gunfire can attract infected from significant distances, while suppressors greatly reduce how much attention a weapon creates.

Firing repeatedly in the same location can be much more dangerous than dealing with a few infected quietly.

Sometimes avoiding a fight is safer than winning one loudly.

Scent, Blood and Tracking

Survivors can leave information behind.

Injuries and other events can create traces that certain infected are capable of detecting.

This makes escaping while wounded more dangerous and gives specialized infected additional ways to hunt the player beyond normal vision.

Injuries and Medical Survival

Combat can cause more than simple health loss.

Zombie Apocalypse-ZA includes additional survival and trauma systems intended to make injuries matter during longer encounters.

Players may need to manage their physical condition instead of immediately returning to full combat efficiency after every fight.

Medical preparation can become just as important as ammunition.

Infection

Survivors can become infected.

Infection progresses over time and creates a serious survival threat if left untreated.

The system is designed to make close combat and repeated exposure risky even when the player survives the immediate encounter.

Fortifications and Sieges

Defensive structures are an important part of surviving the apocalypse.

Players can create fortified positions, but defenses are not intended to provide permanent safety.

Infected can pressure defensive locations, and powerful infected such as Brutes can become major threats during prolonged attacks.

A good base should buy time.

It should not make the apocalypse disappear.

Dynamic Threat Director

A background Director helps control zombie activity and larger encounters.

The system monitors world conditions and adjusts certain events to create periods of tension, recovery and escalation.

The intention is to avoid a world where every minute feels identical.

Some areas may remain quiet for a time.

Others may suddenly become extremely dangerous.

Last Stand Encounters

Under certain conditions, survivors may encounter major escalation events designed around intense large-scale combat.

These encounters are intended to test ammunition reserves, positioning, fortifications and escape planning.

Surviving them should feel different from defeating an ordinary group of infected.

Field Intelligence

The mod includes systems designed to help survivors understand the apocalypse instead of forcing them to rely entirely on hidden mechanics.

Field tools can provide information about threats, infected activity and surrounding conditions.

Knowledge becomes another survival resource.

Performance and Large Zombie Populations

Zombie Apocalypse-ZA is designed with large infected populations in mind.

Several internal systems reduce unnecessary processing for distant or inactive infected, including optimized AI behavior, animation handling, targeting and pathfinding.

The goal is to allow large hordes and persistent world simulation without requiring every infected in the world to run full AI at all times.

Designed for Firearms

TaCZ is a required dependency and is deeply integrated into the apocalypse experience.

Different weapons, firing patterns and suppressors interact with the noise system.

Automatic gunfire may solve an immediate problem while creating a much larger one nearby.

Optional TaCZ weapon packs can also be used alongside the mod.

Recommended Gameplay

Zombie Apocalypse-ZA works especially well with mods that add:

  • Firearms

  • Vehicles

  • Abandoned cities

  • Survival mechanics

  • Expanded loot

  • Large structures

  • Post-apocalyptic world generation

The mod is designed to act as the foundation of a larger zombie survival modpack while still providing its own complete infected and apocalypse systems.

Installation

  1. Install Minecraft Forge for Minecraft 1.20.1.

  2. Use Java 17.

  3. Install TaCZ 1.1.8 or newer.

  4. Install Zombie Apocalypse-ZA.

  5. Add any optional compatible weapon packs or survival mods you want to use.

Both the client and server should have the required mods installed when playing multiplayer.

Development

Zombie Apocalypse-ZA is actively being expanded and refined.

Current development focuses heavily on improving existing systems, infected behavior, world simulation, performance and overall survival gameplay before expanding into additional major features.

The long-term goal is to create a complete zombie apocalypse framework where infected, survivors, resources, territory and player actions all influence the world around them.

The apocalypse should not feel like a collection of random zombie spawns.

It should feel like a world trying to survive.
