About this project
What does Dungeon Gates add?
Gates
Ancient gates lie hidden in ruins across the world. Open one, and wave after wave of monsters pours out. Survive, and the gate rewards you with treasure. Every gate watches how you fight, and the next wave is built to challenge you.
Finding gates
Every gate type has its own home and three different ruin layouts:
- Castle Gate: crumbling gatehouses and walls in forests, plains and meadows
- Rotting Gate: sunken shrines and graveyards in swamps
- Ossuary Gate: bone pits and tombs in deserts and badlands
- Tech Gate: abandoned labs and crashed machines in the mountains
- Infernal Gate: bastions and altars on the Nether's cave floors
- Ender Gate: purpur shrines and crystal rings on the outer End islands
Each ruin comes with a loot chest and a Ritual Pedestal. Gates can also be crafted around a dragon egg.
Fighting waves
Right-click a gate: something pounds on the doors. Right-click again and it opens. A session has 10 waves, and each wave has several stages. Clear them all and the gate falls silent. Only then can it be mined with a diamond pickaxe and carried home.
Danger that adapts to you
Behind every wave is the Danger Point (DP) system. Instead of throwing numbers at you, gates tell you how dangerous they feel, from Calm to Apocalyptic:
- Clear stages fast and flawlessly, and the gate grows restless. Struggle, and its fury wanes.
- A smart spawner spends each stage's budget on enemies, elite upgrades (armor, weapons, enchantments, potion effects) and the occasional boss. It won't simply spam zombies.
- It learns your favourite way to kill (melee, arrows, explosions, fire, pets) and sends enemies that counter it.
- Bosses appear when the danger is high enough, not at random, so they never ambush a fresh gate.
Treasure bags
Every player who fought in a wave gets their own Treasure Bag, Common to Legendary depending on how dangerous the wave was. Right-click to open it. Inside:
- the gate's own themed loot
- valuables that grow with the tier: diamonds, enchanted books, netherite, nether stars
- a chance for enchanted armor or a weapon from any installed mod
- a chance for loot from another mod's dungeon chests
Rituals
A defeated gate can be woken again at its Ritual Pedestal:
- End Crystal: the crystal beams power into the gate, which starts a new session with its danger kept.
- Charged Respawn Anchor: drains into the gate for a fresh start at low danger.
Works with your mob mods
Monsters from other mods that live in a gate's biomes automatically join its waves. Built-in lists add the best mobs from Alex's Mobs, Alex's Caves, L_Ender's Cataclysm, Born in Chaos, Deeper and Darker, Mowzie's Mobs, Ice and Fire, Mutant Monsters, Illager Invasion and Friends & Foes. Modded bosses are recognised by their strength and saved for dangerous waves. Wave enemies never burn in daylight and never fight each other.
Build your own gates
In creative, the Gate Architect's Codex lets you design custom gates:
- appearance, portal, particles and sounds, with catalogs that preview every creature, particle and sound in your game
- enemy lists, wave counts, rewards and where the gate generates
Custom gates are saved globally, so they are in every world you play, including survival.
Fully configurable
Everything can be tuned in the in-game settings screen or the config files: difficulty scaling, the DP price of every mob and item, spawn limits, treasure bag contents, ruin rarity and more. Datapacks can add gate types, spawner upgrades, mob lists and treasure lists.
Requires Minecraft 1.20.1 with Forge 47 or newer.
