About this project
What does VHS: Vivi's Hat Simulator add?
Dear [person of no importance to me, replace with name or something],
We have too many hats.
I bought a warehouse off the internet with some sort of prime membership. Did you guys know they sold warehouses? I didn’t. I also didn’t know that said warehouse would be full of mostly old hats. Not very fond of the smell and to be honest, I was planning to host raves here. Big raves, loud music, flashing lights, a few people dressed up in inflatable tyrannosaurus rex costumes. That was the plan, and now my plan has been foiled by the smell of cheap cotton, polyethylene, rubidium, I don’t know how hats are made or what they are made of. Or how they sell for that matter. Neither did the last owners of the warehouse, otherwise I wouldn’t be stuck in this cosmetic conundrum.
As F. Scott Fitzgerald once wrote:
“Then wear hats, gold ones, that’ll get you the girl! Bounce for her! Up and down show her your hat! And she will be like “Hey I want a hat!” - F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Hatsby
I haven’t found any gold hats yet. If I did, I would be hosting a rave and 16 million hats would be filling up a landfill in lower Manhattan. I also don’t have any hats that increase your jumping height. But I do have hats.

*Warehouse not included. It's mine, I need it for the rave
Hats that shine! Hats that shimmer! Hats that use odd magic to tally death!
You want these hats. Your friends want these hats. You want your friends to have hats that you can trade for with your hats. You want their friends to have hats to trade with your hats and then trade with your friends hats. I want to host a rave. It’s a win-win-win-win situation. Except for those without hats, because they don’t feel particularly bouncy.

Vivi’s Hat Simulator does what you think it does. It adds lovingly modeled and textured hats to the game with a robust cloud-based inventory system so you can collect, trade, and most importantly wear a unique cosmetic look.
Gives you hats: You’re not the simple Minecraft player. You don’t want to be stopped at just a skin, a cape. And you certainly don’t want a cosmetic that everyone else has or can have. You want something to call your own.
Unique tradable items: Our warehouse offers only the best protections for your hats. With a cloud-backed inventory system, your hats are decidedly yours as long as the warehouse stands. Any version (soon ™), any server, any mods. Your hats are visible to you and others as long as everyone has the mod.
Play and earn: The warehouse has decided to disperse free crates for you to unbox. What’s inside? I don’t know, I didn’t really check. Just threw a bunch of random stuff in there. Play Minecraft and you’ll get them in the mail.
A shared system: What good would a cosmetic be without the ability to show it off? All players with the mod will see your hat loadout, with rigorously tested performance benchmarks (I used my intel integrated graphics card!). It doesn’t matter what server, what modpack, or if you convince the server admin to install the mod.
Events! More hats! Down with scummy Minecraft servers!: You heard me right! I’ll be hosting events, releasing more hats, effects, and cases. Join us for exclusive update information, first view of upcoming cosmetics and effects, and a wonderful community. I have a hope to make a severe dent in the predatory Minecraft servers that engage in gambling-esque loot-crate systems by undermining the pseudo-ownership that locks players to one server.

*Backrooms not included either. I think.
Unique hats, unique effects.
Every hat is different. I can confidently say that I haven’t seen a single duplicate pattern on any of these. A few of them spotless, a few of them absolutely moth-ridden, but none the same. Hats use a seeded float value, with randomly generated wear and texture changes, and random color gradients fixed at creation, so you can find the perfect cosmetic loadout to match your mood, skin, or phase of a celestial body. Some of these hats even seem to produce extraordinarily weird particles. Probably the rubidium, but I’m not really a marine biologist.
Lovingly crafted by me.
Finally, my graphic design degree I got 10 years ago has a use. Other than my job. I’m an artist, and I love seeing the joy my creations bring to the world. Every hat, every texture, has been carefully curated by me, and there are more on the way! I hope to share my art, improve my modeling and texturing skills, and engage with a community passionate about wearing things on their heads.

Java runtime: Same Java as required by your version.
Dependencies: No dependencies for current supported versions.
Install side: The mod is client-side, and does not require a server with it installed.
Account + connection: Official Minecraft account required as well as an internet connection for a majority of features. Your last cloud refreshed loadout will display if you are offline.
Release status: This mod is currently in a beta state. All testers who join my discord below and are active in feedback will receive a special beta hat. There may be frequent updates, but I expect the beta to only last a week or two.
I hope to bring compatibility for every version of Minecraft. 1.7.10 and 1.12.2 should be out soon. As long as this mod is alive, I will update it so you can keep owning, displaying, and enjoying your hats.
Installation & first launch
Install using your preferred modloader or drop into an existing modpack/installation’s mod’s folder.
Launch, navigate to the wardrobe using the = key or using the button on the main menu.
Make sure you are connected to the internet, the cloud will do the rest. On the first load, expect hats to take a second or 2 to appear, but subsequent loads will be much snappier.
Your inventory will start empty. Play Minecraft for a bit until you see a message in your chat telling you that a case has dropped! Click the link in chat or go to your wardrobe another way, right click the case to open, view contents, and roll for your first hat!
Currently, you will get 4 new cases a day after about 1 hour of active play each. This stacks up to 7 days of cases (28), so don’t worry if you miss a day!
Controls & settings
Open Wardrobe: Default = key; remapping under Controls → VHS
Equip & inspect: Double click for quick equip, right click for more options and inspect
Appearance settings: Toggles underneath your player preview for auto-hiding armor or showing it, syncs with other players.
Notifications: Turn off or on notifications in the VHS menu settings, click the gear icon to customize to your liking.
Updates: There will sometimes be minimum required versions to connect to the cloud for item security, events, etc. You will be notified and linked to the curseforge page for these updates. Not every update will progress the minimum required version, but you could see display errors if you haven't updated.
Multiplayer, cloud & item ownership
Who can see my cosmetics? Everyone with the mod installed on the latest minimum version.
Where is my collection saved? Your collection is stored safely in a cloud repository, backed by several layers of protection.
What works offline? Your last loadout synced to the cloud will be available offline, changing it will not.
What data is used and sent to the cloud?
- Minecraft UUID and username. Required for Mojang authentication and most VHS related operations including ownership, nearby players, and equipped cosmetics.
- All VHS related things. Kill counters, loadout, trade listings, blocks, and inventory history. Activity in a seconds count to report playtime.
What data is NEVER used, sent, or collected?
- No recording or collection of keys pressed, mouse movements, anything like that.
- No Microsoft login credentials. Don’t need em.
- No hardware fingerprinting
- No collection of chat logs. Only trade notes are stored with a strict profanity filter.
Cases, trading & collection rules
Earning items: 4 cases per day, 60 minutes apart, stored up to 28 a week. 28 max stored cases earnable anytime you play next.
Opening cases: Opening will consume the case and provide you with a free random item.
Item traits: Items will have a float value similar to other in-game item economies, a random wear pattern, potentially random colors or model variations, and the chance to get a quaint or extraordinary quality hat (or both). Quaint cosmetics will track your mob kills over any server, Extraordinary hats will have a randomly chosen particle effect.
Trades & trade-ups: You are able to trade 10 hats of the same quality from any case to the next quality over. Quaint and Extraordinary trade-ups are possible, with the chance relative to the items put in. Hat wear outcome is relative to average wear used in trade up. Random attributes are not affected
Cost: You will never have to pay a dime to use this mod, nor will you have to have extreme playtime to get cosmetics. No hats, qualities, or rarities will ever be restricted behind a paywall. If I decide to implement any kind of paid item, you will see the exact item you will get before purchasing, no random chance.
Compatibility & troubleshooting
Tested combinations: No known issues
Performance: Starts to lag on an integrated intel graphics card and non turbo-boosted cpu around 100 hats with 2 extraordinary effects per hat in a 10x10 group.
Missing hats or empty Wardrobe: First check your internet connection, then check you are on the latest version before reporting bugs on my discord.
Clipping, missing effects or crashes: Please submit the full crash log, error log, or reproducible bug you are experiencing in a new thread on my discord linked below.
