About this project

What does CTT Shield display add?

Shield Display

Shield Display is a purely client‑side Minecraft utility mod, originally built to fit the high‑intensity tower‑defense gameplay of Cake‑Team‑Towers. It adds an on‑item overlay showing exact shield durability values, solving the limitations of Minecraft’s default shield durability indicator.

What problem does this mod solve in vanilla Minecraft?

In unmodified Minecraft, shield condition can only be judged by a tiny partial‑color bar located above the hotbar. This indicator gives only a rough visual hint, with no exact number values. During fast‑paced tower‑defense combat with large groups of zombies, skeletons and other hostile mobs, players cannot quickly tell exactly how many more hits their shield can absorb. Players are forced to pause combat, open their inventory screen and hover over the shield item to read precise durability data. Opening inventory breaks player focus, leaves you vulnerable to incoming damage, and interrupts tower‑defense positioning and base‑defense operations. Many players experience unexpected shield breaks mid‑wave, resulting in preventable deaths and failed defense rounds.

Core Features

  1. On‑model numeric durability overlay Renders clear readouts directly on top of the shield item you hold in your off‑hand. Two display modes are available: absolute durability points (example: 42 / 336) and percentage‑based value (example: 12%). Numbers render only when you are actively holding a usable shield.
  2. Dynamic color warning system Display text automatically shifts color based on remaining shield health:
  • Green: 51 %‑100 % — shield is in good working condition.
  • Yellow: 26 %‑50 % — shield has taken noticeable damage and needs attention soon.
  • Red: 0 %‑25 % — critical low durability; shield is very close to breaking. This high‑visibility red text serves as an early visual warning before your shield shatters.
  1. Instant real‑time refresh Every time your shield blocks an attack, absorbs damage, or receives repair, the displayed number refreshes instantly. There is no delayed or cached stale data; what you see always matches the true current durability stored on your shield item.
  2. Zero server‑side changes, gameplay‑neutral This mod performs no modification to shield mechanics, block‑timing, damage calculation, item recipes, mob behaviors, world generation or any server‑side game logic. It only reads already‑existing item durability data on the client and renders visual text overlays. Installing this mod on the server is not required. Servers without this mod will accept clients running Shield Display normally, there are no multiplayer compatibility breaks. Uninstalling the mod removes all overlays; no world save data or item data gets altered in any way.
  3. Optimized performance for mob‑heavy tower‑defense scenarios All rendering logic runs client‑only with minimal CPU and GPU overhead. It is designed to maintain stable frame rates even when dozens or hundreds of hostile mobs spawn simultaneously during Cake‑Team‑Towers defense waves. It will not introduce lag or tick‑drop under high‑entity‑count conditions.
  4. Broad shield item compatibility Works correctly with vanilla Minecraft shields, as well as custom‑added shield items from other client‑compatible mods inside the modpack. Any item that uses Minecraft’s standard shield durability NBT tag will show the durability overlay properly.
  5. Designed to work alongside Item Counter Shield Display is intended as the companion mod for Item Counter. Item Counter handles stack‑count and ammunition readouts for held weapons, and Shield Display covers shield durability. Used together, players get complete real‑time combat‑relevant information without opening inventory at any point during battle.

How this mod changes player experience

Players no longer need to stop defending and open inventory to inspect shield status. While fighting incoming mob waves, you observe durability numbers and warning‑color text directly on your off‑hand shield with a quick glance from peripheral vision. You can make quick tactical decisions: whether you can safely keep blocking incoming attacks, when you should retreat behind defensive towers, when you should swap to a spare shield from your hotbar, or when you should fall back to heal.

Practical in‑game example from Cake‑Team‑Towers

You are holding front‑line defense against a mixed wave of zombies, skeletons and creepers. Your off‑hand shield shows bright red text reading 21 / 336. You immediately understand your shield can absorb very few more hits. Instead of continuing to block and risking a sudden shield break, you quickly fall back behind your defensive towers, swap to a fresh spare shield from your hotbar, and resume holding the defensive line. All of this happens without pressing E to open inventory and without losing sight of approaching enemies.

Requirements

  • Client‑side installation only; server installation is unnecessary.
  • Matches the Minecraft version and mod loader used by Cake‑Team‑Towers modpack.
