About this project
What does Applied Causality add?
Applied Causality
Turn verified processing recipes into bulk ME crafting transactions.
Applied Causality is an end-game addon for Applied Energistics 2 on Minecraft 1.20.1 / Forge. Its Singular Pattern Provider uses ordinary AE2 Processing Patterns to convert the ingredients for many operations into their exact combined outputs, without operating physical processing machines.
Development status and item safety
This MOD is still under active development. The UI and usability need substantial refinement, and many undiscovered bugs should be expected. Use a separate test world and back up important saves before using it in a world you care about.
Future releases may introduce breaking changes to configuration formats, recipe support, gameplay behavior, or saved data. Compatibility and migration between versions are not guaranteed. Read the release notes and back up your world and configuration before updating.
Bulk processing interprets recipe definitions to calculate material inputs and outputs; it does not simulate or operate the original machines. Actual machine behavior can include retained inputs, additional outputs, or state-dependent quantities that recipe data does not fully describe. Mandatory validation rejects recognized unsupported or uncertain semantics, but incorrect interpretation, unsafe custom profiles, or implementation bugs can still cause item loss or duplication. Existing tests and audited subsets do not guarantee safety for arbitrary MOD combinations or recipe changes.
Such machines require MOD-specific recipe interpretation and verification. Dedicated support for a tested subset of Mekanism machine recipes is already implemented to validate this approach. Adding an Unlock rule alone does not add missing recipe support; use the audited subsets described below.
Requirements
Install Applied Causality on both the client and server, together with:
- Minecraft 1.20.1 and Java 17
- Forge 47.4.10 (development baseline)
- Applied Energistics 2 15.4.10
- GuideME 20.1.7, required by AE2
Download the Forge releases and put their JARs in the instance's mods/ folder. When using the CurseForge app, check that AE2's own required dependencies are also installed.
Optional integrations use these audited versions:
- Mekanism 1.20.1-10.4.16.80 for supported Mekanism recipe subsets.
- Applied Mekanistics 1.4.3 alongside Mekanism for Chemical processing patterns and storage.
- AdvancedAE 1.3.5-1.20.1 for Quantum Computer crafting. Install AdvancedAE's own required dependencies, including GeckoLib.
- JEI 15.56.0.205 for recipe lookup and item discovery.
Basic AE2 and Vanilla Smelting use does not require these optional mods. Other dependency versions have not all been verified.
Getting started
Craft a Singular Pattern Provider with this shaped recipe:
S P S
C N C
S P S
S = AE2 Singularity (four), P = AE2 Pattern Provider (two), C = AE2 Crafting Unit (two), and N = Nether Star (one). The recipe makes one Provider; obtaining a Singularity unlocks the recipe-book entry.
- Connect the Provider to a powered ME network with an available channel, a Crafting CPU, and stored Raw Iron.
- Encode a normal AE2 Processing Pattern for one Raw Iron → one Iron Ingot. Pattern amounts describe one operation.
- Right-click the Provider and shift-click the pattern into its inventory. There are nine pattern slots; a normal left-click selects a slot to view its status and binding candidates.
- Put a Furnace item in the first Installer slot. It remains there and is not consumed or operated as a machine.
- Request several Iron Ingots from an ME crafting terminal. The available, verified pattern runs in bulk.
The default rules also unlock processor assembly with an AE2 Inscriber Installer and Mekanism Cobblestone → Gravel with a Crusher Installer. The stock Logic, Calculation, and Engineering Processor assembly recipes qualify; printed circuits, printed silicon, plate copying, and dust-producing Inscriber recipes do not.
Balance and modpack progression
The standard Provider recipe uses only materials available with vanilla Minecraft and AE2, without another content MOD. Its current bulk-processing power is disproportionate to that acquisition cost. Modpacks are expected to replace the crafting recipe and tune Unlock rules to make it an end-game unlock. Gameplay balance is still being refined.
Installers, binding, and pack configuration
The first launch creates config/appliedcausality-common.toml and three initial rules under config/appliedcausality/rules/: smelting.toml, ae2-inscriber.toml, and mekanism-crushing.toml. The Crushing rule is ignored when Mekanism is absent.
The default policy is DENY_ALL, with one active Installer slot. A supported, verified recipe remains locked until its matching rule is satisfied. Four Installer slots are visible; set installerSlots = 2..4 in the common config and restart to activate more. Existing rules are preserved, and deleted default rules are not generated again.
A unique recipe match is selected automatically. For an ambiguous pattern, choose a Validated binding candidate in the menu. Clear binding restores automatic selection. Binding never bypasses validation or Installers.
You can try recipes from MODs that have not been tested with Applied Causality by adding their Recipe Type under [[recipe_types]] in a rule file, using the existing standard_static_item interpretation, and configuring any required Unlock rules. This can make compatible recipes usable without a dedicated MOD adapter. It is limited to fixed Item inputs and outputs that satisfy that interpretation's contract; it does not add arbitrary machine, Fluid, or Chemical support. Operation and item safety are not guaranteed for these custom profiles. Mandatory validation still applies, and rejected recipes remain unavailable. Audit the actual machine behavior and test in a separate world; see the configuration guide for the exact contract.
The adapter implements 18 exact Mekanism recipe subsets: Enriching, Crushing, Smelting, Combining, deterministic Sawing with no secondary output, and—with Applied Mekanistics—Oxidizing, Gas Conversion, Infusion Conversion, Pigment Extracting, Metallurgic Infusing, Centrifuging, Crystallizing, Chemical Infusing, Pigment Mixing, Separating, Washing, Pressurized Reaction, and Rotary processing in either direction. Only Crushing has an initial Unlock rule; the others need pack-authored rules.
The release JAR includes README.md, CHANGELOG.md, docs/CONFIG_RULES.md, configuration templates under examples/config/, and license notices. Open the JAR as a ZIP archive to read them. Rule changes are loaded at startup and after a successful server /reload; restart after common-config edits.
The Creative Singular Pattern Provider is available in the Functional Blocks creative tab, has no survival recipe, and bypasses only the Installer/Unlock requirement. Recipe validation still applies.
Limits
Support covers audited fixed recipe quantities and ingredient forms within the listed subsets. Chance results, retained catalysts, unknown semantics, and machine-state-dependent processing are rejected. Added or removed Inscriber recipes require a pack-author audit of the included profile. Unlock rules do not add support for unsupported recipes.
Normal ME power, channels, planning, and Crafting Storage limits apply. Version 0.1.0 does not account for each physical recipe's energy cost or processing time, and adds no interface for arbitrarily large crafting requests. Arbitrary recipe-script mutations after loading have not been audited.
Undelivered bulk outputs are saved and retried. After cancellation, let the Crafting CPU finish returning its inventory before breaking it. Standard AE2 may discard unreturned Fluids on CPU destruction; Applied Mekanistics uses its own Chemical destruction behavior. Keep Applied Mekanistics installed while saved Chemical jobs or returns exist.
Crafting CPU addon compatibility
Applied Causality uses Mixins in crafting CPU logic to integrate bulk execution with AE2 and the audited AdvancedAE implementation. Other addons that add or modify crafting CPUs, or patch the same logic, may cause Mixin conflicts, crashes, or incorrect crafting behavior. Compatibility with arbitrary CPU addons is not guaranteed. Test your exact MOD combination before using it in an important world; the listed integration versions describe only the audited baseline.
Development transparency
Applied Causality is developed with extensive use of AI-assisted coding.
