What is Thirst Mechanics?

Thirst Mechanics brings thirst to Minecraft, shown above your hunger bar. Thirst goes down over time and faster when you sprint, and you manage it by drinking from different water sources: some are safe, some are risky. Drink dirty water and you might get sick. Let the bar run dry and you start losing health. Stay hydrated or face the consequences.

Water Sources

The drinkable items in a row: water bottle, Purified Water, Purified Water Bucket, milk bucket, Bowl of Water, mushroom stew, beetroot soup, rabbit stew and melon slice

Source Thirst Restored Risk
Water Bottle +4 50% chance of Nausea + Poison + Darkness
Bowl of Water +3 40% chance of Nausea + Poison
Milk Bucket +8 None
Mushroom Stew +2 None
Rabbit Stew +2 None
Beetroot Soup +2 None
Melon Slice +1 None
Purified Water +8 None
Purified Water Bucket +8 per drink (12 drinks) None
Lifestraw +8 per sip (64 sips) None

Chart of thirst restored per drink, out of a full bar of 10 droplets: Purified Water Bucket, Purified Water, Lifestraw sip and Milk Bucket restore 4 droplets each; Water Bottle restores 2 droplets with a 50% chance of sickness; Bowl of Water restores 1½ droplets with a 40% chance of sickness; mushroom, beetroot and rabbit stew restore 1 droplet; Melon Slice restores ½ droplet

Tip: Right-click on any water source block with an empty bowl to fill it with water.

Tip: Milk, stews, soups and melon can be eaten even when your hunger bar is full, so you can always use them to top up thirst.

Purifying Water

Any water you collect yourself is risky until you cook it. Smelt it in a furnace (10 seconds) or on a campfire (30 seconds, no fuel needed):

Purification recipes: a water bottle cooks into Purified Water, and a water bucket cooks into a Purified Water Bucket. Each takes 10 seconds in a furnace or 30 seconds on a campfire

  • Water Bottle → Purified Water: a safe bottle, +8 thirst.
  • Water Bucket → Purified Water Bucket: a canteen with 12 drinks of +8 each. When it's empty it turns back into a regular bucket.

In-game screenshot of a campfire in a snowy biome with water cooking on it

Water bottles and Purified Water only stack to 4, so plan your trips around how much water you can carry.

Items Added

The six items added by the mod: Purified Water, Purified Water Bucket, Bowl of Water, Activated Charcoal, Lifestraw and Rain Collector

  • Purified Water: A safe water bottle. Craft by smelting a water bottle in a furnace or over a campfire.
  • Purified Water Bucket: A safe, reusable water bucket (12 drinks). Smelt a water bucket in a furnace or over a campfire.
  • Bowl of Water: Fill an empty bowl by right-clicking on a water source.
  • Activated Charcoal: The filter used by the Rain Collector and the Lifestraw. Craft with charcoal + redstone.
  • Lifestraw: A portable filter for drinking safely straight from any water.
  • Rain Collector: A block that automatically fills with rainwater and can filter it.

Lifestraw

The Lifestraw: a light-blue filter tube with dark blue caps on each end Lifestraw crafting recipe: an iron nugget, Activated Charcoal and another iron nugget stacked in the middle column

A filter straw for drinking straight from lakes, rivers and puddles, with no bottles and no risk of getting sick.

How to use:

  1. Craft it from 2 iron nuggets and 1 Activated Charcoal (nugget, charcoal, nugget in a column).
  2. Look at water within 5 blocks and hold right-click to sip.
  3. Each sip restores +8 thirst, with no chance of getting sick.

The filter wears out after 64 sips, and then the straw breaks.

🌧️ Rain Collector

The Rain Collector block: a wide roof on a short column above a glass tank partly filled with water Rain Collector crafting recipe: a hopper in the top middle; iron ingot, bucket, iron ingot in the middle row; iron ingot, glass, iron ingot in the bottom row Activated Charcoal crafting recipe: charcoal and redstone, placed anywhere in the grid

The Rain Collector is a block that automatically fills with rainwater when placed under an open sky.

How to use:

  1. Craft the Rain Collector and place it outside with nothing above it.
  2. Wait for rain: the reservoir fills from 0% to 100% in about 4 minutes of rain.
  3. Right-click with an empty glass bottle to collect water. Each bottle uses 10% of the tank, so a full tank fills 10 bottles.
    • Without a filter: regular water bottle (risk of contamination)
    • With a filter: purified water bottle (safe)
  4. Insert Activated Charcoal into the filter slot (GUI) to purify the water. Right-click the collector without a bottle to open the GUI.
    • One piece of activated charcoal = one purified bottle
    • The charcoal is consumed after each use

The Rain Collector menu: 17 Activated Charcoal in the filter slot, and a water gauge on the right showing the tank partly full

⚠️ The collector only fills if the sky is visible above it and it is raining. It does not work underground or under a roof.

Requires a stone pickaxe or better to break.

Dehydration Effects

Thirst Level Effect
½ droplet (thirst floor) Lose ½ heart every 30 seconds
Your health reaches ½ heart Damage stops. Dehydration alone never kills you

Thirst resets fully on death.

Thirst can't drop below ½ droplet, and dehydration can't take you below ½ heart. At that point, one zombie is all it takes.

Fully Configurable

Every value in this mod can be tuned in the config file located at:

./config/thirst-mechanics.json

Configurable values include:

  • Thirst decrement interval
  • Sprint and jump drain
  • Thirst gain per source
  • Poison chances
  • Effect durations
  • Rain Collector fill rate
  • Lifestraw and Purified Water Bucket durability
  • Stack sizes for water bottles and Purified Water
  • Damage threshold and minimum health

Default values

20 thirst points = 10 droplets. 20 ticks = 1 second.

Option Default Meaning
maxThirst 20 Size of the bar
decrementIntervalTicks 600 Lose 1 point every 30 s

Drinks from other mods

Any food or drink from another mod can restore thirst: add its item ID to customDrinkGains. No code changes are needed.

"customDrinkGains": {
  "better_mcdonalds_mod:coca_cola": 6,
  "somemod:orange_juice": 5
}

Just edit and restart.

Admin command

/hydrate <player> fills a player's thirst bar (requires operator / Game Master permission).
