About this project
What does Cobblemon: Cobble Instincts! add?
Cobble Instincts
Wild Pokémon that behave like living creatures, not wandering statues.
Cobble Instincts is a behavior engine for Cobblemon. It gives Pokémon instincts drawn from their species, type and the Pokédex: Oddish bury themselves, Diglett tunnel, Houndour hunt in packs, Beedrill swarm around you, Drowzee eat your dreams and Magcargo melt your ore. More than 50 instincts cover hundreds of species, and all of them are configurable from a single JSON file.
Available for Forge 1.20.1, Fabric 1.20.1, NeoForge 1.21.1 and Fabric 1.21.1.
✨ Highlights
- 🧠 Species-aware AI: each instinct is mapped to the species and types where it makes sense.
- ⚔️ Works with real combat: integrates with Cobble Strike and Fight or Flight. Instincts never interrupt a Cobblemon battle.
- 🐎 Rider-safe: nothing triggers on a Pokémon you are riding or carrying (PokeRider compatible).
- 📈 Performance governor: caps heavy AI per server, staggers scans and backs off automatically when TPS drops or a boss is nearby.
- 🎬 Animation hooks: every instinct can play a
ci_*animation if a resource pack provides one, and falls back silently if it doesn't. - 🛠️ Fully data-driven: ranges, speeds, cooldowns, chances and species lists all live in config/cobbleinstincts/behaviors.json. Changes apply with
/cobbleinstincts reload, no restart needed.
🌿 Hiding, burrowing & camouflage
| Instinct | Pokémon | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Burrow | Oddish line, Bounsweet line, Smoliv line, Foongus, Morelull, Greavard… | They bury themselves when a player comes close and pop out when it's safe. |
| Ambush | Paras, Parasect | They wait buried and spring out at whoever walks past. |
| Tunnel | Diglett, Dugtrio, Durant, Impidimp line | They dig real tunnels under the ground, surface when you approach, and the tunnels refill on their own. |
| Pitfall traps | Trapinch, Sandile line, Silicobra, Hippopotas, Drilbur, Larvitar… | When chased, they leave hidden pits behind them. Step on one and you sink, get slowed and lose half a heart. The ground always restores itself. |
| Mimic tree | Sudowoodo, Bonsly | They build a real fake tree and stand inside it. They sweat if you stare at them, then run off and rebuild somewhere else. |
| Hang from leaves | Metapod, Kakuna, Silcoon, Cascoon, Spewpa, Swadloon, Burmy, Pineco | Cocoons hang motionless under tree canopies on a silk thread. |
| Cocoon hordes | Metapod, Kakuna, Silcoon, Cascoon, Spewpa, Swadloon, Burmy, Pineco | Cocoons spawn in clusters of 3–7. |
| Climb trees | Caterpie, Weedle, Treecko line, Aipom, Mankey, Spinarak, Joltik, Teddiursa… | They climb up and down tree trunks. |
| Hide from threats | Most wild Pokémon (needs Cobble Strike) | Frightened Pokémon look for cover instead of just running in a straight line. |
🏃 Fleeing & reacting
| Instinct | Pokémon | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Flee & teleport | Abra | It runs from players and teleports away when cornered. |
| Threat response | Rattata, Bidoof, Zubat line, Pidgey, Carbink, Diancie… | They flee, fly off or fight according to their nature. Flocks flee together, and Carbink run from Sableye. |
| Lure | Litwick | It keeps just out of reach so you follow it: it backs away when you approach and waits when you fall behind. It can dodge your Poké Balls. |
| Grabbed response | Pichu, Pikachu, Raichu, Plusle, Minun, Togepi | Snatched by a bird of prey, they fight back with a thunderbolt or teleport out. |
| Drifloon ride | Drifloon, Drifblim | Right-click to grab on and drift away on the wind until it lets go. With playerAnimator installed, you hang by one arm. |
🐺 Packs, swarms & hunters
| Instinct | Pokémon | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Pack | Houndour/Houndoom, Growlithe/Arcanine, Sneasel/Weavile, Falinks, Beedrill, Combee/Vespiquen | Hit one and the rest join the fight in a chain reaction. Packs follow their leader and give up chases that go nowhere. |
| Swarm | Beedrill, Combee, Vespiquen | They circle around you with smooth, collision-aware flight. Beedrill get angry if you linger inside the swarm. Crouch to stay unnoticed. |
| Formation | Falinks | They march in a single file behind their leader. |
| Predation | Pidgeotto, Pidgeot, Spearow, Fearow, Noctowl, Braviary, Corviknight, Weavile, Heatmor… | They stalk and hunt their natural prey, such as Heatmor hunting Durant. |
| Aerial hunt | Archeops, Talonflame, Mandibuzz, Staraptor, Cramorant | They circle high, dive, grab their prey, carry it up and drop it. Cramorant fishes underwater. |
| Scavenge | Murkrow, Mandibuzz, Vullaby, Mightyena, Zigzagoon… (needs Cobble Strike) | They gather at fresh carrion to feed or steal. |
| Steal items | Nickit, Thievul, Murkrow, Honchkrow, Impidimp line | They tackle you and run off with an item from your inventory, or snatch food from the ground. |
🦄 Herds, families & daily life
| Instinct | Pokémon | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Graze | Tauros, Miltank, Skiddo, Deerling, Ponyta, Mudbray, Wooloo, Phanpy… | They eat tall grass, berries and crops (and replant them). Sableye dig out gems. |
| Drink & bathe | Herd animals, canines, Swinub line, Lechonk, Bewear… | They walk to the shore to drink, and wade or wallow in shallow water. |
| Rest | Most Pokémon, especially the Regis and Snorlax | They lie down and nap, waking up from noise, hits or players getting close. |
| Defend young / follow parent | Starters, Swinub, Phanpy, Lillipup, Mareep, Rhyhorn, herds | Adults protect their young, and the young follow and hide behind the adults. |
| Courtship | Many mammals and birds | Male and female meet up and dance around each other. |
| Follow player | Latias, Latios, Mew, Growlithe, Eevee, Vulpix, Meowth, Litten… | Curious Pokémon tag along with you for a while. |
| Charge | Tauros, Rhyhorn line, Mamoswine, Donphan, Mudsdale, Entei, Raikou, Suicune, Swords of Justice… | They charge in a straight line at whatever they're fighting. |
| Pollinate | Butterfree, Vivillon, Cutiefly, Ledyba, Combee, Celebi, Shaymin… | Fluttering over plants, they make flowers, grass and crops grow, and leave a trail of greenery behind them. |
| Attach | Shellder, Remoraid, Bergmite, Calyrex, Sirfetch'd | Shellder clamps onto Slowpoke's tail (and evolves it!), Remoraid follows Mantyke, Bergmite ride Avalugg, and Calyrex rides its steed. |
| Sleep with owner | Your Pokémon | Pokémon out of their ball lie down when their trainer goes AFK. |
🔥 Elements & weather
| Instinct | Pokémon | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Weather speed | Water and Fire types | Rain speeds up Water types and slows down Fire types. |
| Seek shelter / shade | Charmander line, many types | They hide from rain under any roof, or from the sun in hot biomes. |
| Extinguish fire | Squirtle line, Rhyhorn | They run to put out nearby fires. |
| Melt snow | Fire types, Entei | They leave a trail of melted snow (Entei melts ice too). |
| Smelt ore | Slugma, Magcargo, Torkoal, Numel, Camerupt, Magmar line, Heatran, Coalossal, Entei, Groudon… | Raw ore dropped near them turns into ingots instantly. Crouch beside them to smelt the stack in your hand. Works with modded ores too. |
| Magnetize | Magnemite, Magneton, Magnezone | Iron items on the ground fly toward them and orbit around them. |
| Heat-shy | Your Ice types | In the Nether they stick close to you, drip as they melt, and retreat to their Poké Ball on their own if they get hit or burned. |
👻 Ghosts & psychics
| Instinct | Pokémon | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Press buttons | Gastly line, Misdreavus, Duskull line, Rotom, Shuppet… | Mischievous ghosts press nearby buttons, phasing through walls if they have to. |
| Ghost fade (off by default) | Gastly line, Duskull line, Misdreavus, Shuppet, Yamask, Spiritomb | They stay invisible until you look at them up close, and slip through thin walls. |
| Lullaby | Jigglypuff, Hypno | Jigglypuff sings you to sleep and time skips forward. Hypno puts you to sleep when you walk past a bed. |
| Dream eater | Drowzee, Hypno | Fall asleep near one and it appears at your bedside to drain a few hearts. It never kills you, and vanishes when you wake up. |
| Healing | Happiny, Chansey, Blissey | They heal injured players and Pokémon, and cure negative effects. |
🛡️ Fighting back
| Instinct | Pokémon | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Thunder | Zapdos | It strikes its attacker with lightning and arrives with a thunderbolt. |
| Ice cage | Articuno | The first hit seals its attacker inside a block of ice, which melts away on its own. |
| Flame | Moltres | It sets its attacker ablaze and arrives in a burst of fire. |
| Smoke screen | Torkoal | Black smoke blinds anyone who hits it up close. |
| Magma shot | Camerupt | Near lava or magma, it hurls a burning magma block at you. |
| Poison touch | Poison types | Melee attackers may get poisoned or stunned. |
| Psychic burst | Psyduck | Hit it three times and its headache explodes: a purple psychic burst knocks back, levitates and dizzies everyone nearby. |
| Aggro display | Fighting, Dark, Fire, Dragon, Rock, Ground, Steel… | A threatening gesture animation while in combat. |
🔌 Compatibility
| Mod | Support |
|---|---|
| Cobble Strike | Recommended. Real wild combat, threat memory, hiding and scavenging. |
| Fight or Flight | Supported as an alternative combat provider. |
| PokeRider | Instincts never trigger on mounts or carried Pokémon. |
| TC World Reborn | Flight positions are reserved to avoid conflicts. |
| playerAnimator | Optional: arm pose while hanging from Drifloon. |
| KopperLib (Forge 1.20.1) | Optional: Shellder clamps onto the real tail bone. |
| Mod Menu (Fabric) | Config screen. |
All integrations are optional. Without them, the mod falls back gracefully.
⚙️ Configuration & commands
- config/cobbleinstincts/behaviors.json: every instinct, the species and types it applies to, and all its parameters. Add your own species, disable anything, or tune the balance.
/cobbleinstincts reload: reloads the config and reattaches behaviors live./cobbleinstincts info: shows which instincts the nearest Pokémon has.- By default, most instincts only affect wild Pokémon. Utility ones (smelting, magnetism, melting snow, sleeping) also apply to yours.
1.21.1 note: Cobblemon 1.7 ships its own grazing, pollination, breeding and herd-following AI, so those four instincts are off by default on 1.21.1 to avoid overlap. You can turn them on in the config.
