About this project
What does Runic Attunement add?
✦ RUNIC ATTUNEMENT ✦
Forge enchantments. Discover forgotten knowledge. Build equipment deliberately.
Runic Attunement is a complete alternative enchanting system for Fabric 1.20.1, designed around exploration, progression and player choice rather than repeatedly rolling an Enchanting Table.
Instead of spending levels hoping for the right result, players discover Runic Tablets throughout the world. Each Tablet contains knowledge of a specific enchantment and can be brought back to a Runic Attunement Table to permanently apply or improve that enchantment on compatible equipment.
The system is designed to feel like a natural extension of Minecraft while supporting much deeper modpack progression.
🜂 THE CORE GAMEPLAY LOOP
Runic Attunement revolves around a simple progression:
Explore → Discover Tablets → Build your Runic setup → Attune equipment → Refine excess Tablets → Progress into stronger enchantments
Runic Tablets can be found as part of structure loot throughout the world.
Each Tablet belongs to one of three potency levels:
Latent
Dormant and relatively common Runic knowledge.
Resonant
More powerful Runic knowledge found deeper into progression.
Pristine
Rare, highly refined Runic knowledge representing the strongest Tablet tier.
A Tablet also stores the enchantment it is Attuned to, allowing the same Tablet item system to support both vanilla and modded enchantments without requiring hundreds of individual items.
📜 RUNIC TABLETS
A Runic Tablet represents knowledge of a specific enchantment.
For example, you may discover:
Latent Runic Tablet
Attuned to Sharpness
or:
Pristine Runic Tablet
Attuned to Mending
Tablets are placed inside nearby Chiseled Bookshelves.
This turns the surrounding library into a collection of discovered enchantments.
The table detects the Tablets stored around it and makes those enchantments available for Attunement.
Tablet tooltips provide:
• The Tablet's potency
• The enchantment stored within it
• Its Runic Attunement usage
• Additional Grindstone, Reforging and progression information while holding Shift
🔮 THE RUNIC ATTUNEMENT TABLE
The vanilla Enchanting Table becomes the center of the system and is presented as the:
Runic Attunement Table
Place your equipment into the table and it will inspect the Runic Tablets stored in nearby Chiseled Bookshelves.
Available enchantments can then be selected directly.
There is:
No random enchantment rolling.
No level requirement.
No repeated rerolling until the correct enchantment appears.
You choose exactly what you are building. No guesswork!
💎 ATTUNEMENT COSTS
Attunement requires several resources to ensure it is balanced.
🔹 Lapis Lazuli
Lapis Lazuli is a universal Attunement resource.
Every Attunement requires Lapis in addition to the enchantment's thematic material costs.
This preserves Lapis as an important enchanting resource.
🔹 Thematic Materials
Individual enchantments can require materials appropriate to their identity and power.
These are fully datapack-configurable.
Different enchantments can therefore have completely different resource paths, and can be customised to fit your modpack or personal project.
🔹 Raw Experience Points
Runic Attunement uses raw XP points rather than Minecraft levels.
For example:
135 Points
means exactly 135 accumulated experience points.
The player does not need to be a particular level.
If you have enough total experience points, you can perform the Attunement.
This allows XP progression to scale predictably rather than being distorted by Minecraft's increasing level curve.
📈 ENCHANTMENT PROGRESSION
Enchantments are improved one level at a time.
If your equipment currently has:
Sharpness II
and you perform the next valid Sharpness Attunement, it becomes:
Sharpness III
Each target level can have its own material and XP requirements.
Higher-level enchantments can therefore become progressively more expensive while remaining completely deterministic.
⚗️ RUNIC DUST
Not every Tablet you discover will be useful to your current build. Perhaps you already have a particular Tablet at base.
Instead of becoming worthless clutter, unwanted or duplicate Tablets can be processed into Runic Dust.
Simply place a Tablet into a Grindstone to break it down into Dust matching its potency.
Latent Dust
Resonant Dust
Pristine Dust
Dust becomes an important resource for Reforging and potency progression.
🔨 REFORGING
Runic Tablets can be reforged using the vanilla Anvil.
Reforging allows players to use accumulated Runic Dust to improve the potency of their Tablets.
Possible progression includes:
Latent → Resonant
Resonant → Pristine
and, when configured:
Latent → Pristine
Success chances are configurable.
This creates a second progression path alongside exploration:
Find Tablets naturally, or recycle excess knowledge into resources that can improve the Tablets you already possess.
⇢ TRANSMUTATION
Runic Attunement also includes a dedicated Transmutation system.
Transmutation allows enchantments to be transferred from one compatible item to another.
Insert:
Source Item → Target Item
Then select which enchantments should be transferred.
The system calculates the required:
• Materials
• Raw XP Points
• Transfer cost
• Optional source-item destruction chance
Only successful transfers consume resources.
This provides a controlled method of preserving valuable enchantments when transitioning into better equipment, such as upgrading from an Iron to Diamond weapon.
🏰 EXPLORATION & LOOT
Runic Tablets are designed to be discovered through exploration.
The mod includes configurable loot profiles for structure loot tables across the game.
Each loot profile defines things such as:
• Which loot table receives Tablets
• Whether that profile is enabled
• Base Tablet chance
• Allowed potency progression
The default release contains 18 Runic loot profiles for vanilla structures.
Global loot generation can also be adjusted through the main configuration.
🏆 ADVANCEMENTS
Runic Attunement includes its own advancement progression.
Players are guided through the major systems naturally, including:
📜 Discovering Tablets
⚙️ Grinding Tablets into Dust
🔨 Reforging
🔮 Using the Runic Attunement Table
✨ Performing the first Attunement
⭐ Reaching maximum enchantment levels
⇢ Performing Transmutation
💎 Progressing through stronger Tablet potencies
The advancement tree is intended to introduce the system without requiring players to read an external manual first.
⚙️ CONFIGURATION
Runic Attunement is designed for both standalone use and heavily customized modpacks.
The main configuration is located at:
config/runic_attunement.json
The generated configuration is self-documenting.
Every major setting includes an adjacent _help_* entry explaining exactly what the option controls and what its values mean.
Existing configurations are preserved when new annotations/default fields are added.
Main configuration categories
🏰 Loot Generation
Configure:
• Enable/disable Runic Tablet loot
• Global loot chance multiplier
• Relative Latent / Resonant / Pristine weights
Default potency weighting:
Latent — 65%
Resonant — 30%
Pristine — 5%
These weights apply after a Tablet roll succeeds.
🔨 Tablet Reforging
Configure:
• Whether Reforging is enabled
• Latent → Resonant success chance
• Resonant → Pristine success chance
• Latent → Pristine success chance
Values use normal probability ranges.
For example:
0.50 = 50%
1.00 = guaranteed
0.00 = impossible
✨ Experience Costs
Configure:
• Enable/disable XP costs
• Global XP cost multiplier
• Independent Transmutation multiplier
For example, a global multiplier of:
1.0
uses the normal configured cost.
0.5
halves XP costs.
2.0
doubles them.
⇢ Transmutation
Configure:
• Enable/disable Transmutation
• Source-item destruction chance
• Base enchantment cost weighting
• Potency weighting
• Extra-level weighting
• Curse-retention multiplier
This allows servers and modpacks to make Transmutation anything from a convenient equipment-management mechanic to a major late-game investment.
🚫 Enchantment Bypass Controls
Modpack authors or users can optionally enable or disable alternative sources of enchantments so Runic Attunement becomes the primary progression system.
Separate controls exist for:
• Naturally generated enchanted books
• Villager enchanted-book trades
• Naturally generated enchanted equipment
• Enchanted-equipment trades
• Vanilla Anvil enchanting
• Fishing enchanted books
• Mob-spawn enchanted equipment
Each system can be enabled or disabled independently.
Normal repair and renaming behavior can remain available while vanilla enchantment application is restricted.
⛔ Enchantment Blacklist
Individual enchantments can be excluded using registry IDs.
Example:
minecraft:mending
Blacklisted enchantments are removed from active Runic generation and Attunement availability.
This is useful when another mod or progression system is intended to control a particular enchantment.
📦 DATAPACK SUPPORT
One of Runic Attunement's primary design goals is modpack extensibility.
Most enchantment progression does not need to be hard-coded into the mod.
Definitions are loaded through datapacks.
📜 Enchantment Definitions
Runic enchantment definitions are located under:
data/<namespace>/runic_attunement/enchantments/
Each definition determines how an enchantment interacts with the Runic system.
Definitions can specify information such as:
• Enchantment registry ID
• Required Tablet potency
• Attunement material costs
• Per-level progression
• Raw XP point costs
• Other Runic progression requirements
This means modded enchantments can be integrated without creating new Java items or rewriting the core system.
Add a datapack definition and the enchantment can become part of Runic progression.
The default 1.0 release includes 37 configured enchantments.
🏰 Loot Profiles
Structure Tablet generation is also datapack-driven.
Loot profiles are located under:
data/<namespace>/runic_attunement/loot_profiles/
A loot profile targets a Minecraft loot table and defines how Runic Tablets should be injected into it.
This makes it possible to:
• Add Tablets to modded structures
• Remove them from specific structures
• Create dimension-specific progression
• Adjust drop rates
• Restrict stronger Tablets to dangerous locations
without needing to modify the mod itself.
🔄 Datapack Reloading
Runic definitions and loot profiles participate in Minecraft's resource reload system.
Changes can therefore be loaded using:
/reload
where appropriate.
The mod validates loaded definitions and reports useful information through its diagnostics/logging systems.
🛠️ COMMANDS & DIAGNOSTICS
Runic Attunement includes administrative and development commands intended to make configuration and datapack creation easier.
Use:
/runicattunement
for available diagnostics and subcommands.
Tools include functionality for inspecting:
• Held Runic items
• Runic Attunement Tables
• Loaded definitions
• Validation state
• Reload behavior
• Test item generation
• Debug information
Mutating/debug functionality is permission-controlled.
🧩 MODPACK DESIGN
Runic Attunement was originally created for Path of the Ascended, but the system is designed to function independently.
It is particularly suited to modpacks that want:
✅ Deterministic enchanting
✅ Exploration-driven progression
✅ Controlled access to powerful enchantments
✅ Custom material sinks
✅ Meaningful Lapis usage
✅ Configurable XP progression
✅ Datapack integration for modded enchants
✅ Alternatives to Librarian rerolling
✅ Better control over enchantment acquisition
🎨 DESIGNED TO FEEL LIKE MINECRAFT
Runic Attunement deliberately reuses familiar Minecraft infrastructure where possible.
📚 Chiseled Bookshelves store discovered knowledge.
⚙️ Grindstones break Tablets into Dust.
🔨 Anvils Reforge Tablets.
🔮 Enchanting Tables become Runic Attunement Tables.
Rather than adding unnecessary one-purpose machines for every mechanic, the mod gives existing Minecraft blocks new roles within a unified progression system.
