[JEIR] | JEI Rewired
Massively speeds up Just Enough Items by cutting down loading freezes, optimizing recipe processing and search indexing, and keeping every single recipe intact. Made with love at BlackRift Studios :]
Quick answer
Which [JEIR] | JEI Rewired release should I use?
[JEIR] | JEI Rewired jeirewired-1.1.4-beta-omni-1.20.1.jar targets 1.20.1 with Fabric, Forge, NeoForge. The project page does not say whether this file belongs on the client, dedicated server, or both. All 3 required mods have matching files.
Where it goes
Is [JEIR] | JEI Rewired required on the client, server, or both?
The project page does not say whether this file belongs on the client, dedicated server, or both.
The source does not explicitly classify this release as client-only or server-only.
What else does [JEIR] | JEI Rewired jeirewired-1.1.4-beta-omni-1.20.1.jar need?
jeirewired-1.1.4-beta-omni-1.20.1.jar. Change the file and its required mods may change too.
Install [QAPI] | Quantified API, Just Enough Items (JEI), MezzConfig first. We found matching files for this game-version and loader setup. 2 come through another mod in the chain.
2 extra mods were pulled in by other dependencies. Indented rows show who needs each one. We only count dependency files that match this setup. A file for another loader does not fill the gap.

About this project
What does [JEIR] | JEI Rewired add?
《▓ JEI Rewired ▓》
JEI Rewired | Forge & Fabric 1.20.1
《▒ So what does JEI Rewired actually do? ▒》
JEI is great until you throw it into a pack with a few hundred mods, tens of thousands of recipes and plugins doing god knows what on startup (reincarnation of hell)...
Then you join a world, everything freezes and you get to stare at Minecraft for the next 10 seconds like you don't have anything else to do in life... Beautiful
JEI Rewired goes after the actual work causing that. Recipe registration gets cheaper, ingredient filtering stops doing so much pointless work, and JEI can start through Quantified API without keeping the client thread blocked for the whole thing like other competitor mods do xd.
《▒ Where the speed comes from ▒》
Recipe processing
JEI's vanilla plugin has quite a bit of repeated work when registering recipes. Rewired makes that path cheaper without changing the recipes it gives back.
Ingredient filtering
The filter doesn't need to spend two whole seconds doing something that can finish in a fraction of that time xd.
Background startup
Suitable JEI startup work runs on a Quantified API worker. Screens, runtime handoff and other client-sensitive parts still go through Minecraft's client thread.
Search preparation
The search index is built in the background. Once it's ready, Rewired warms the search path so your first search doesn't randomly pay for cold code as well.
Plugin fallback
If a plugin actually fails during background startup, Rewired retries the normal client-thread route and disables further background attempts for that session.
《▒ The actual numbers (as always) ▒》
Tested in a 237 mod Forge 1.20.1 pack on a Ryzen Z1 Extreme (Aka ROG ALLY) with JEI 15.59.0.212. It has 77,070 recipes, Create, KubeJS, Refined Storage, Immersive Engineering, TaCZ and a whole lot more.
| Test | Normal JEI | Rewired |
|---|---|---|
| Cold startup on client thread | 14.1 to 14.2 s | 7.1 to 8.5 s |
| Freeze during JEI restart | 7.1 to 10.0 s | 2.1 to 3.4 s |
| Cold vanilla recipe processing | 4.8 to 5.4 s | 1.7 to 1.9 s |
| Cold ingredient filter | ~2.0 s | ~0.2 s |
| First search | 5.5 to 8.3 ms | 9.0 ms |
| Visible recipes | 77,070 | 77,070 |
| Heap after GC | ~2,662 MB | ~2,688 MB |
The biggest difference is the large as hell freeze. With background startup, the longest observed cold join gap was 4.0 to 6.3 seconds in this pack (yikes...).
These are results from one pack and machine, not a guaranteed speedup on every PC!!! Background startup may take longer on the worker because it overlaps world loading (genuine possibility!!!!!!!).
《▒ And the recipes? ▒》
All 77,070 of them are still there.
The same 13,098 items, 113 fluids, 116 visible categories, recipe sets and search results as normal JEI in the tested pack.
Rewired doesn't hide anvil recipes, throw out grindstone entries or conveniently forget about half the pack just to make startup look faster (Fun fact: other alternatives do so).
《▒ About other JEI optimization mods ▒》
Yep, JEI Rewired isn't the only mod trying to fix JEI's loading times (nor I will claim having the best one xd).
But I want to make this clear: JEI Rewired is its own implementation. It is NOT a fork, reupload or copy of competing JEI optimization mods, and it doesn't use their code, nor aims to replace JEI itself.
《▒ Background work without random crashes ▒》
JEI plugins weren't all written assuming somebody would move their startup callbacks off-thread (Expected to be honest). So Rewired doesn't just hand absolutely everything to a worker and pray a plugin doesn't absolutely nuke your whole game.
- Startup uses a controlled Quantified API worker
- Screen creation and runtime publication return to the client thread
- A plugin exception during background startup triggers a normal client-thread retry rather a crash
- Background startup is disabled for the rest of that session if the retry is needed
- Search and recipe contents are checked against normal JEI in the test harness
This can't detect every plugin which silently assumes the client thread. If a particular pack doesn't like async startup, disable it with asyncStart=false in config/jeirewired.properties or use -Djeirewired.asyncStart=false.
The other optimizations still work without it :]
《▒ Compatibility & requirements ▒》
Minecraft 1.20.1, Forge and Fabric. One OmniJar.
Requires Just Enough Items and Quantified API V2, installed separately. JEI and QAPI aren't bundled.
The 237 mod Forge production pack used JEI 15.59.0.212 and QAPI 2.2.5.

Thanks to the developers of Just Enough Items for making JEI in the first place. Rewired is an independent performance addon, not an official JEI release.
Found a missing recipe, broken plugin or a JEI startup that went completely sideways? Send the log, JEI version, loader and the pack you're using so I can reproduce it :]
