About this project
What does ContractsQuest add?
ContractsQuest
A quest mod for Minecraft 1.20.1 (Forge). Turn any NPC into a living quest board. Players accept quests, track progress on a HUD, and claim rewards — while admins create and manage everything in-game. No config files, no restarts.
Perfect for servers, modpacks, RPG and adventure packs, tutorials and achievement-style progression.
For players
- Right-click the Quest Master to open the quest panel: browse quests, accept them, and claim your reward when done.
- Quest Book: press K (rebindable) or use the
questmod:quest_bookitem to open your quests anywhere — no NPC needed. - Quest HUD with live progress of your active quests (configurable position and quest count).
- '!' markers float above the NPC: red when new quests are available, gold when you have rewards to claim.
- Progress only counts after accepting, and it's saved per player — it survives death, logout and server restarts.
Quest types
KILL— Defeat 10minecraft:zombieBREAK— Break 32minecraft:oak_logEAT— Eat 5minecraft:appleCRAFT— Craft 16minecraft:torchSMELT— Smelt 20minecraft:iron_ingotDELIVER— Deliver 5minecraft:diamondto the NPC
Rewards are optional: items (ID + amount) and/or XP. Rewards can be hidden — they show as ??? until claimed.
Works with any mod
Objectives and rewards are plain resource IDs (modid:name), so mobs, blocks and items from any installed mod work out of the box. Press F3+H in-game to see advanced tooltips with the IDs you need.
For admins
- Create, edit and delete quests in-game from the quest panel — changes apply instantly for everyone. In singleplayer, the world owner is an admin even without cheats.
- Quest access per quest: offer each quest via NPC only, Quest Book only, or both.
- Quest Book quests: run a whole progression without any NPC — great for tutorials and achievement-style packs.
- Auto-accept & auto-claim: quests can accept themselves when unlocked and deliver rewards straight into the inventory.
- Per-NPC quest lists: each NPC can offer every quest on the server, or only the ones you hand-pick.
- Quest Scroll: copy one NPC's quest list and paste it onto others. Great for quest hubs.
- NPC editor (shift + right-click): rename the NPC, change its appearance and scale, choose which quests it offers, and delete NPCs.
- 6 appearance modes: the default Quest Master, a player skin, a skin from a URL, a resource-pack texture, any mob from any mod (rendered with its real model), or a floating 3D item (perfect with
CustomModelData). - Scale from 0.1x to 8x.
- Admin commands:
/questmod export,/questmod reset,/questmod complete.
Datapacks & modpacks
- Write quests as JSON in
data/<namespace>/questmod/quests/*.json— they load on startup and with/reload, and are read-only in-game. - Names starting with
$are treated as translation keys, so packs can localize every quest. /questmod export <namespace>turns the quests you built in-game into a ready-to-ship datapack. Build with the editor, distribute with the datapack.
Fully themeable
The entire GUI theme lives in theme.json: colors, sizes, panel texture. Any resource pack can override it — including the server's pack — and it reloads with F3+T. The '!' markers can be retextured too.
Usage & Permissions
ContractsQuest is a community-friendly project. You are free to adapt it to your needs.
Allowed
- Use it on any server, singleplayer world or modpack (CurseForge modpacks can include it directly).
- Monetize your server or modpack in other ways (ranks, donations, store) — that's fine.
- Customize themes, quests, resource packs and datapacks, and share them freely.
- Modify and redistribute the code, giving credit to "ContractsQuest by Kanuz" and linking to this page.
- Modified versions must include "ContractsQuest" in their name, e.g. "ContractsQuest Christmas Edition", and be clearly marked as modified.
Not allowed
- Selling the mod, or any modified version, or putting it behind a paywall is strictly forbidden (including Patreon, Ko-fi, paid tiers, early access or paid roles).
- Claiming the original work as your own.
Full terms are in the project license. Support for modified versions is the responsibility of their authors.
Technical notes
- Quests are stored in the overworld's
SavedData: they survive restarts and are shared by every NPC. - Player progress lives in persistent player NBT.
- The Quest Master is invulnerable, can't be pushed and never despawns.
- Required on both client and server.
