About this project

What does Lodistance add?

Lodistance adds huge view distances to Minecraft by rendering far-away terrain as lightweight
Level-of-Detail (LOD) models. Close by you see real 3D blocks, further away the detail gradually simplifies, so you get mountains, oceans and builds on the horizon without needing a monster PC.

Features:

  • Huge view distances: up to 2048 chunks of distant terrain beyond your normal render distance.
  • Remembers what you've seen: terrain you explore is saved per world and dimension, so it stays
visible even on servers with a small view distance.
  • Singleplayer import: your saved worlds are imported automatically, including areas you visited long ago.
  • Real 3D detail up close: trees, buildings and structures keep their shape near the edge of your normal view; detail decreases smoothly with distance.
  • Accurate colours: biome-correct grass, foliage and water colours, also for areas that were
imported or received from a server.
  • OpenGL and Vulkan: with Sodium, LODs are drawn through Minecraft's own renderer (OpenGL and
    Vulkan).
  • Seamless blending: real terrain always draws in front of LODs, and the fog is extended to match.
  • Presets for every PC: Low, Medium, High, Ultra and Ultra+. Lower presets keep the frame rate up on weaker computers; Ultra+ gives full detail up to 2048 blocks for high-end systems.

Two variants:

(please download the right one for you)

Both variants are built from the same code. The only difference is server communication.

Lodistance: Singleplayer, or any server. You see everything you've explored yourself.
Lodistance Server: You run a Fabric server. Put the same jar on the server and on the clients, and players see the whole explored world of the server, including areas they have never visited.
(Use a mod like Chunky to generate chunks further away to see more of the world)

The server variant only sends changed chunks after the first time, works in the background with a bandwidth limit and won't slow your server down. Server settings are in
config/lodistance-server.properties.

Settings and commands

All settings are in Options → Video Settings → Lodistance (the Sodium settings screen).

Command Description
/lodistance Status and statistics
/lodistance on / off Enable or disable LODs
/lodistance distance <16-2048> LOD distance in chunks
/lodistance quality <1-5> Detail at distance (5 = Ultra+)
/lodistance rebuild Rebuild all LODs
/lodistance reload Reload the config file
/lodistance import Import the singleplayer world again
/lodistance wipe Delete this world's LOD data and rebuild

Requirements

  • Minecraft 26.3, Fabric Loader 0.19.5 or newer, Fabric API, Java 25
  • Sodium (recommended: needed for Vulkan and the settings page)
  • Fabric server with Fabric API (server variant only)

Compatibility

Lodistance replaces other LOD mods. DO NOT use it together with other LOD mods!

Tips for weaker computers

Start with the Low or Medium preset. If the frame rate is still too low, lower the 3D detail
distance first, then the LOD distance.
