About Tools Crafting Return

Tools Crafting Return is a lightweight quality-of-life mod that lets you recover useful crafting materials from tools, weapons, and armor you no longer need. Place exactly one supported item into any crafting grid to receive part of its main material back.

Dynamic Recipe Detection

The main feature of Tools Crafting Return is its dynamic recipe system. Instead of relying on a fixed list of recycling recipes for vanilla equipment, the mod finds the original crafting recipe for the inserted item at runtime.

It counts the ingredients, ignores common handles and connectors such as sticks, rods, string, and bindings, and identifies the dominant material used to craft the item.

Because the original recipe is inspected automatically, Tools Crafting Return provides broad support for equipment made from modded materials such as obsidian, emerald, custom gems, ingots, planks, and other resources. Most supported equipment does not require a separate compatibility pack or manually created recycling recipe.

How the Return Amount Is Calculated

The returned amount starts with the number of dominant material ingredients found in the original recipe. The mod then applies the configured return percentage, which defaults to 80 percent.

When durability calculations are enabled, the result is also multiplied by the item's remaining durability percentage. A tool with most of its durability remaining returns more material than a heavily damaged tool.

The final result is rounded up to the nearest whole item. If the original recipe uses one main material, the mod returns one material. For recipes using multiple main materials, the result is limited to at least one material and at most one less than the original material count. This ensures that recognized equipment always returns something useful without allowing complete material recovery.

Configuration

Tools Crafting Return includes two server-controlled settings:

Return Percentage: Controls how much of the main crafting material is returned. It can be set from 1 to 100 percent and defaults to 80 percent.

Account for Damage: Determines whether the item's remaining durability affects the return amount. It is enabled by default. When disabled, only the return percentage is used.

The configuration file is named tools_crafting_return-server.toml. Depending on the loader and installation, it can be found in the instance's config folder or the world's serverconfig folder.

NeoForge users can also open the settings from the Mods screen by selecting Tools Crafting Return and choosing Config while playing in a local world. Local worlds use the host world's settings, while multiplayer servers control the settings for every connected player.

Mod Compatibility

Tools Crafting Return is designed with mod compatibility as a major priority. Its dynamic system allows it to recognize and support a wide range of damageable tools, weapons, and armor made from modded resources.

Most standard crafting recipes should work automatically. Equipment that uses highly customized crafting systems, unusual ingredient definitions, or non-crafting-table creation methods may require additional compatibility support.

Give your old equipment a purpose and recover materials that would otherwise go to waste!
