SP Pets

SP Pets — miniature Zombie companion

A tiny floating companion, an active-pet bonus and a configurable SP-style HUD. Version 0.7.3 includes a 90-pet collection. The original 13 with gameplay bonuses are: Zombie, Creeper, Skeleton, Enderman, Spider, Slime, Blaze, Ghast, Wither Skeleton, Pig, Cow, Wolf and Bee. All pets start locked and can now be permanently unlocked with matching named fragments. The collection displays every pet as a gray portrait until acquired. Four special companions now have specialized bonuses; 73 additional companions remain visual-only. Ghast carries a working dynamic-light lantern when LambDynamicLights is installed on the client.

v.0.7.4 Changes in this version

  • All 90 companions can pass through walls, closed or open doors and other solid blocks while following their owner.
  • Fixes companions getting stuck outside a house or behind a single or double doorway.
  • Preserves free wandering around the player, independent facing and recovery when the owner moves far away.
  • Companions travel only through loaded chunks; following does not force-load additional chunks.
  • Includes the global collection search introduced in 0.7.3.

v.0.7.3 Changes in this version

  • The collection search now finds pets across Overworld, Nether and The End simultaneously, regardless of the selected tab.
  • For example, select Overworld and search for Shulker: Shulker still appears.
  • Clear the search field to return to the selected section. Empty or whitespace-only queries show that section normally.
  • Case-insensitive matching, alphabetical ordering, fragment progress and locked/unlocked portraits are preserved.

Collection search and dimensions — 0.7.2

/pets now groups the collection into Overworld, Nether and The End tabs, each sorted alphabetically. The search box at the top right instantly searches pet names across all three sections; matching ignores case and accepts underscores as spaces. For example, searching Shulker while Overworld is selected still finds Shulker. Clear the search field to restore the selected section. Changing a tab or query returns the list to the top, while the total unlocked counter still covers all 90 pets.

Each pet appears in exactly one collection section: Overworld 74, Nether 12, The End 4. Enderman and Endermite are grouped with The End; Happy Ghast is grouped with Nether. These are collection groupings, not changes to where fragments can drop. Ownership, fragments and unlock requirements are preserved.

Collection with search and dimension tabs

Species fragments

Every one of the 90 pet fragments has a distinct crystal-shard texture with its companion portrait and characteristic colors. Open the dedicated SP Pets — Fragments tab in Creative to browse all variants alphabetically. These are real, species-tagged fragments usable for unlocking pets. With the MMORPG inventory installed, use its Creative button, then select the SP Pets fragment tab.

Fragments already saved in inventories, item entities and trader offers automatically use the new visuals. No conversion or extra stack components are needed. Drop chances, prices, unlock requirements and pet behavior are unchanged.

Features

  • One active companion, approximately Allay-sized, smoothly following its owner.
  • Free wandering: chooses different nearby points, distances and heights, pauses, and faces its travel direction independently of the owner.
  • A single scrollable collection opens with /pets: six columns at normal sizes, five on narrower screens, and fewer columns on compact displays.
  • Each companion has its own editable Blockbench model and pixel texture.
  • Configurable Max HP bonus: initially +10 HP (five hearts), adjustable from 0 to 100.
  • No attacks, damage, collision pushing, item pickup, loot or monster progression.
  • Active companion HUD with its exact configured bonus and pet icon.
  • Hover over the HUD icon in your inventory or pet menu to read the bonus tooltip.
  • Personal HUD visibility, size and opacity settings, with live X/Y position sliders (0–100%).
  • Custom floating Zombie model recreated from the mod icon in Blockbench.
  • Active choice saved separately per player UUID and world; reconnect restores it.
  • /spadmin integration for personal pet access and administrator bonus settings.

Only an active Zombie belonging to a living, non-Spectator owner grants the HP bonus; other companions grant the effects listed below. Death and Spectator suspend it; it resumes after respawn or returning to another game mode. Dismissing removes the bonus. Summoning never heals or adds duplicate modifiers. Removing bonus health clamps current health to the remaining maximum when necessary. An invisible owner keeps the bonus but the companion visual is hidden.

Put the regular SP Pets JAR, SP Core and Fabric API into mods. Install matching SP Pets on the server and clients. Replace previous versions instead of keeping duplicate JARs. Singleplayer uses your local instance only.

MMORPG, Equipment, Economy and VitalView are optional for Pets. It uses its own health and attribute modifiers and does not overwrite their attributes, balances or progression. Optional VitalView compatibility hides combat bars only for our invulnerable companion. Core supplies the shared administration and bounded packet helpers. Dependencies are installed separately and are not bundled.

How to use

  • /pets: open the scrollable collection of all 90 pets; no operator permission required.
  • /sppethud: open personal HUD controls only — visibility, scale, X/Y sliders and opacity.
  • All pets begin locked; clicking a locked card does not select or summon it. Summon commands also enforce ownership on the server.
  • Collect Pet Fragment: Name items, open a locked card in /pets, and press Unlock once enough matching fragments are in your inventory. Unlocking consumes the required fragments without summoning the pet.
  • /pets dismiss: put it away and remove its bonus.
  • /spadmin → SP Pets → Settings: edit or reload all shared pet bonuses; requires game-master permission (normally OP level 2 or singleplayer cheats).

/pets summon <pet_id> and /pets dismiss manage pets you own. /sppethud controls change visibility, horizontal/vertical position, scale (75–150%) and opacity (20–100%). Local display settings are saved immediately when changed. Coordinates are percentages of available screen space so the panel stays within the screen.

During normal gameplay the mouse controls the camera. Open your inventory or the pet menu to move the pointer over the icon. The tooltip explains the active companion's configured bonus. The panel is hidden when no pet is active or the HUD is disabled.

Fragment acquisition — 0.7.0

Every supported naturally available creature can drop one Pet Fragment: Name when killed with player credit. Tamed-animal ownership is accepted through player/owner kill credit. Environmental kills without player credit and cosmetic SP companions do not generate fragments. The normal mob-drops gamerule is respected. Dragon death phases and corpse reloads are guarded against repeated fragment rolls.

Default group Required matching fragments Chance per credited kill
Common, including Zombie 100 10%
Rarer creatures 50 15%
Ender Dragon / Wither 5 100%
Warden / Elder Guardian 10 25%
Giant / Illusioner 50 Trader only

Wandering Traders sell 1–5 fragments total per trader, randomly distributed among trader-only species. Each transaction costs one emerald for one fragment. The total is not 1–5 per species. Stock and spent uses survive save/reload and do not refill. Existing traders receive their one-time allocation when their trade interaction is first initialized. New pricing/source settings do not refresh existing stock.

/pets shows the matching fragments currently carried in your player inventory (including the offhand), for example 37 / 100. Click a locked card to inspect progress; Unlock becomes available when enough fragments are carried. It consumes only that species' fragments, permanently grants ownership for this world/player UUID, and does not auto-summon. Owned cards retain their color; click an owned pet to summon it. Duplicate unlocks are refused. If the ownership write fails during an unlock, the inventory and in-memory ownership changes are rolled back.

Configure each pet's required amount, drop percentage and trader-only status in /spadmin → SP Pets → Acquisition. The same page controls minimum/maximum total trader stock and emerald price. Configuration is saved in config/sp-pets/acquisition.json; JSON chance values are fractions (0.10 = 10%), while the admin editor uses percentages. Full default rule example.

Collection fragment progress

Install 0.7.3 on client and server for consistent visuals and Creative browsing. The registered fragment item and state/action protocol v4 introduced in 0.7.0 are preserved. Existing format-2 ownership is preserved; no pets are automatically granted.

Separate commands — 0.6.1

/pets opens the collection; /sppethud opens HUD settings. HUD settings are personal and persist in config/sp-pets/hud.json. The collection has no HUD controls, and closing it returns directly to gameplay. Ownership, existing locks and special bonuses are unchanged. Acquisition is available through fragments as described above.

Independent pet HUD settings

Special companions — 0.6.0

Companion Default bonus Frame / subtle particles
Ender Dragon 15% less Elytra durability consumption during flight Violet / portal sparks
Wither 20% less damage from the Wither status effect Ash / dark smoke
Warden 20% shorter newly applied Darkness Teal / sculk pulses
Elder Guardian 20% shorter newly applied Mining Fatigue Blue / bubble pops

Warden and Elder Guardian are grouped as special companions, rather than universal combat upgrades. All start locked and can be acquired with their matching fragments. Only the active owned companion grants its effect.

Configure these percentages in /spadmin → SP Pets → Settings → Edit bonuses. Older configurations receive missing defaults. Collection tooltips show the configured bonus even for locked pets. The administration form includes only supported bonuses.

Duration reduction applies when an effect is received, preserving its amplifier and display flags. Switching pets does not repeatedly shorten existing effects; infinite durations remain unchanged. Wither protection does not reduce Wither Skull impacts, explosions or unrelated magic damage. Dragon protection affects actual Elytra flight wear, with fractional wear carried between events; it does not protect armor or grounded durability loss.

Particles are client-side, within 24 blocks, at most two per companion every 12 ticks. They respect normal particle rendering and stop when the world is paused. No extra particle packets or permanent light blocks are created.

Locked collection — 0.5.0

All 90 pets are visible in one alphabetical grid, with grayscale portraits, lock icons and status labels. Scroll with the mouse wheel or drag the scrollbar. Locked cards show their names and status on hover.

Earlier format-1 visual test collections are reset to locked, with the original file preserved as <world>/sp-pets.json.before-locked-collection.bak. The new ownership file uses format 2. Existing active pets are dismissed. Since 0.7.0, fragments unlock pets permanently; the format-1 migration still applies only to earlier visual-test data.

Previous visual test expansion — 0.4.0

  • All 90 creature models selectable through /pets → Choose pet (nine pages), or /pets summon <pet_id>.
  • The new 77 show Visual companion (no bonus yet) in their HUD and tooltips. Existing bonuses remain unchanged.
  • Snow Golem has a bare white snow head, coal eyes and a dotted smile; no pumpkin mask.
  • Existing Zombie-only and 13-pet collections automatically unlock the expanded catalog while preserving the active choice.
  • Install matching 0.4.0 on client and server; the expanded entity registry requires both sides to update.
  • Design gallery and editable Blockbench models.

Configuration and world data

config/sp-pets/settings.json belongs to this installation/server:

{
  "format": 1,
  "zombieHealth": 10,
  "bonuses": {
    "creeper": 15, "skeleton": 5, "enderman": 10,
    "spider": 20, "slime": 10, "blaze": 15, "ghast": 15,
    "wither_skeleton": 5, "pig": 15, "cow": 10, "wolf": 5, "bee": 5,
    "ender_dragon": 15, "wither": 20, "warden": 20, "elder_guardian": 20
  }
}

Edit through Core or stop the game/server before changing the file. Core's Reload settings validates it before replacing the live configuration. Invalid/future data is refused without silently resetting the original file.

config/sp-pets/hud.json stores personal display preferences on the client. <world>/sp-pets.json stores owned/active pets per UUID. State is saved through atomic temporary-file replacement where supported; failed writes retain the previous in-memory choice. Back up the world before upgrading.

Companions are transient server-tracked visuals. They are not saved as normal mobs in chunks and do not force-load chunks. They are recreated for the correct owner and dimension, and removed on dismissal, death, disconnect and server shutdown. Tracking uses normal nearby-entity visibility, not a global player-location feed. Third-party vanish systems require their own compatibility verification.

Companion bonuses (0.3.1)

Pet Default effect
Zombie +10 maximum HP
Creeper 15% less explosion damage
Skeleton 5% more bow/crossbow arrow and firework damage; excludes thrown tridents
Enderman 10% movement speed after 5 seconds without dealing/taking damage
Spider 20% less fall damage
Slime Approximately 10% more jump height (launch velocity multiplier sqrt(1.10))
Blaze 15% less fire/lava damage
Ghast Moving visual light, default level 15
Wither Skeleton 5% melee attack damage
Pig 15% less food exhaustion
Cow 10% more food nutrition and saturation; fractional nutrition carries between meals
Wolf 5% attack speed
Bee 5% mining speed

Configure every value in /spadmin -> SP Pets -> Settings -> Edit bonuses, or config/sp-pets/settings.json. Existing configs retain their Zombie HP value and receive defaults for missing bonuses. Only the active companion applies its effect; switching/dismissal removes SP Pets attribute modifiers without removing other mods' modifiers.

Each HUD icon is a portrait of its actual pet model, with name, active effect, and hover details. Enderman shows combat suspension; Ghast clearly shows when its client lighting backend is missing.

Changes in 0.3.0

  • Working bonuses for all 13 companions, editable together through /spadmin.
  • Individual pet portraits, names, effects and hover details in the HUD.
  • Free wandering with varying distance, height and pauses; companions face their travel direction.
  • Ghast lantern integration with optional client dynamic lighting.
  • Enderman HUD reports when its movement bonus is paused during combat.

Ghast lighting dependency

Install LambDynamicLights 4.12.4+26.2 on the client and keep entity lighting enabled. Fabric API is already an SP Pets dependency. Mod Menu is recommended by the lighting mod but is optional. This backend is not required by dedicated servers; the other twelve bonuses work without it. No permanent light blocks are placed and visual lighting does not change mob spawning. LambDynamicLights is downloaded separately from its author and is not redistributed inside SP Pets.

If Ghast does not light up:

  1. Install the latest matching SP Pets version (currently 0.7.3) on both client and server, then summon it with /pets summon ghast.
  2. Open LambDynamicLights settings through video settings or Mod Menu. Enable Entity light sources and select an enabled dynamic-light mode such as Fancy.
  3. Check the Ghast bonus in /spadmin: its light level must be greater than 0 (default 15).
  4. Test at night or in a dark cave. The HUD should show Dynamic light: level 15; Needs LambDynamicLights means the client backend was not detected.

For manual configuration, close the game and change the existing entities key under [light_sources] in config/lambdynlights.toml to true. Do not duplicate the table. Some performance profiles disable entity lighting by default, even when LambDynamicLights is installed.

Run the lighting integration fixture with -Psmoke -Ppack -Plights runSmokeClient. The normal -Psmoke -Ppack runSmokeClient also verifies operation without the optional lighting backend. python tools/render_pet_icons.py regenerates the twelve new portrait icons from their Blockbench models; the original Zombie icon is preserved.
