About this project
What does The Last Lantern add?
The Last Lantern
*The Lantern on the Spire is guttering. When it goes out, the Dusk takes the rest of us.*
**The Last Lantern** turns Minecraft into a story-driven soulslike rendered like a lost PlayStation 1 game. You wake as a **Wick** in the Ossuary beneath the drowned city of Vael. Climb out of the catacombs, cross the flooded streets and walk the ramparts to the top of the Spire, carrying the Lantern's flame before it dies.
It isn't survival with extra mobs. Everything is built by hand: one map, laid out on purpose, with shortcuts that loop back on themselves, hidden items and bosses waiting behind fog.
The World
- **The Ossuary**: cells, catacombs and crypts under the city, and the Pit of Keys at the bottom.
- **The Last Hearth**: a ruined chapel courtyard, the only safe place left, where the blind Lamp-Keeper tends the fire.
- **Drowned Lowtown**: flooded streets, a sunken market and the cathedral where something sleeps on the drowned bell.
- **The Ramparts of Saint Ondine**: castle walls, a bell yard and the long stair up the Spire.
Combat and Systems
- **Stamina**: attacking, sprinting, blocking and rolling all cost it. Pace yourself.
- **Dodge roll** with invincibility frames (Left Alt by default).
- **Ember Flask**: five charges of healing, refilled at hearths. Health doesn't regenerate on its own.
- **Embers**: earned from kills and spent at hearths on Vigor, Endurance, Strength and Skill. Die, and you drop them where you fell. Get back to them before you die again.
- **Hearths**: rest to heal, refill your flask and set your respawn. Resting brings every enemy back. Warp between the hearths you've lit.
- **Fog walls**: walk in and there's no leaving until the boss or you are dead.
- **Messages** left on the ground by those who came before.
No tutorial pop-ups. Watch, learn, die and try again.
Enemies
Husks, Husk Archers on the rooftops, Ghouls, Mire Hounds, shield-bearing Bell Wardens and fire-throwing Lamplighters, each with patterns you can learn.
Bosses
Three of them, each guarding the way forward, with their own music and arenas. Their names you'll learn when you meet them.
The PS1 Look
The whole game is filtered to look like a late-90s console: wobbling vertices, warping textures, low resolution, 15-bit colour with dithering, and thick dusk fog. It comes with its own title screen, music and sound.
You can adjust or switch off the filter in config/lastlantern-ps1.properties.
How to Play
- Install on **Minecraft 1.21.1** with **NeoForge 21.1.x**.
- Use a **profile of its own**, because the PS1 filter, rules and title screen are meant for this mod alone.
- Launch and press **Begin**. Your world is created for you and continued every time after.
Status
This is a **vertical slice**: the first full stretch of the story, from the Ossuary to the top of the Spire, with three bosses and an ending. More of Vael is planned.
