About this project
What does Worlds Unknown add?
Worlds Unknown
One universe. Infinite possibilities.
Leave the Overworld behind and venture into a vast, procedurally generated universe filled with unique planets, drifting asteroids, mysterious environments, and discoveries that make every journey different.
🌌 Explore Space
Ascend to the edge of the Overworld and enter an entirely new dimension: space. Travel through a dark, atmospheric cosmic environment featuring distant stars, realistic-looking celestial scenery, and scattered planets of varying sizes.
Space is designed to feel vast, mysterious, and largely empty, with planets and asteroids distributed across enormous distances. Every celestial object is an opportunity for discovery.
Experience low-gravity movement, drift through the void, and use Elytra to travel faster. Surviving in space requires Water Breathing, making preparation essential before leaving the safety of a planet.
🪐 Discover Procedurally Generated Planets
There are no fixed planet types or predetermined worlds. Each planet is generated through randomized world-generation parameters, creating an unpredictable environment to explore.
Planets can feature:
Randomly generated biomes and landscapes.
Different terrain elevations, mountains, valleys, caves, and unusual formations.
Varied block distributions and geological compositions.
Randomized ore generation and resource availability.
Different gravity levels that affect movement and exploration.
Randomized mob populations and wildlife.
Unique environmental characteristics and combinations of generation parameters.
Planets should feel genuinely different from one another, rather than being copies with different colors or superficial variations.
Each planet has its own persistent world data, allowing its generated terrain and player modifications to remain consistent when revisiting it.
🌍 Complete Worlds, Not Just Spheres
Every planet contains a fully explorable Minecraft world, comparable to the Overworld, Nether, or End.
The spherical appearance of a planet in space is a visual representation of that world, not a restriction on the shape or size of its playable terrain.
Planet interiors feature their own terrain generation, biomes, resources, elevations, gravity, and mobs. Exploration can reveal anything from familiar Minecraft landscapes to unusual combinations of terrain and environmental conditions.
✨ A Universe of Different Planet Sizes
Planets vary in apparent diameter, with sizes ranging from approximately 40 to 300 blocks.
Planet size follows a rarity distribution: sizes around the common range are more frequent, while unusually small and enormous planets become progressively rarer.
For example, a planet approximately 300 blocks in diameter could have a target appearance frequency of around 0.07%, while a planet approximately 40 blocks in diameter could occur around 1.3% of the time. These are intended rarity targets, subject to the final generation algorithm.
The apparent size of a planet in space is independent of the size and structure of its playable world. A small-looking planet can contain an enormous world to explore.
☄️ Asteroids and Floating Rocks
Space is also populated by randomly generated asteroids and smaller rocky formations.
These objects appear more frequently than planets, creating points of interest without overcrowding the environment.
Asteroids vary in shape, size, composition, and appearance. Some may contain useful materials, while others serve as landmarks or isolated obstacles in the void.
The intended generation density is approximately four asteroids or rocky formations per 32 chunks, compared with approximately one or two planets per 32 chunks.
🌀 Gravity and Movement
Gravity is not necessarily the same everywhere.
Each planet can have its own randomized gravity characteristics, creating different movement and exploration experiences.
Space features low-gravity drifting, allowing players to float through the environment. Elytra can provide faster travel, while planetary gravity influences movement on generated worlds.
Transitions between dimensions must preserve player state and handle spawning safely.
🚀 Travel Between Dimensions
Reach approximately Y=1000 in the Overworld to access space.
From there, discover planets scattered throughout the universe and approach them to initiate a portal-style transition into their playable worlds.
When leaving a planet, return to space at a safe distance of approximately 70 blocks from the planet, rather than appearing immediately beside its surface.
The travel system should preserve the player's return location and handle saving, re-entry, death, and multiplayer appropriately.
🎨 An Atmospheric Cosmic Environment
Beyond the Void aims to deliver a polished visual experience.
Space features a dark background, a carefully balanced starfield, and a restrained distribution of celestial objects. Planets should have detailed, block-inspired appearances that reflect the general character of their generated surfaces without needing to reproduce every interior block exactly.
The goal is to make space feel expansive and atmospheric rather than overcrowded or visually simplistic.
⚙️ Procedural Generation and World Settings
The universe is generated using deterministic world-seed-based logic so that celestial objects retain their identities and characteristics across visits.
World-generation settings should allow players to configure the density of planets and other celestial objects before creating a world, along with other supported generation parameters.
Once a world is created, its established generation settings and discovered planets should remain consistent. Existing planets should not be unintentionally regenerated when configuration values change.
🌠 The Possibilities Are Endless
Beyond the Void transforms Minecraft exploration into a journey across an unpredictable universe.
Every planet is an opportunity to discover unfamiliar terrain, rare resources, unusual gravity, strange biomes, and unexpected combinations of world-generation features.
There are no predefined destinations that guarantee the same experience every time. The universe is built around exploration, randomness, persistence, and discovery.
Leave the familiar behind. Enter the unknown. Explore Beyond the Void.
