About this project
What does Dreaded hollow add?
Dread Hollow
**Something followed you into this world. It learns a little more every night.**
Dread Hollow is a horror overhaul for Minecraft Forge 1.20.1. It brings five monsters with fully animated behaviour, a fear system that messes with your screen and your ears, nights that get worse the longer you survive, a story told in torn journal pages, and a final ritual that can end the curse for good.
Play with sound on. Headphones if you dare.
The Monsters
**The Watcher**: Tall, pale, with a grin far too wide for its face. It stands at the edge of your vision and watches. *It cannot move while you look at it.* Look away and it's closer. Look back and it might be a lot closer. Stare too long and it drops to all fours and charges. Only your flashlight makes it flee.
**Crawlers**: Blind cave dwellers with their eyes sewn shut. They can't see you, but they can hear you running, digging, fighting and breathing. Crouch. Stay still. Hold your breath.
**The Hollows**: The villagers of Hollowmere, faces taken, sacks sewn over what was left. They claw their way up out of the soil in packs, twitch and limp toward you, break down doors, and turn villagers into more of themselves.
**Shades**: Shadows standing just where your eyes don't reach. Look straight at one and it's gone. Usually. When you're terrified enough, they stop running away from you and start running *toward* you.
**The Harbinger**: The thing Hollowmere made its bargain with. Antlers like dead branches, a ribcage full of embers, and over four blocks tall. Summon it if you want to end this.
Every creature has its own hand-made keyframe animations: idle twitches, stalking walks, screeches, lunges, and full death animations instead of the vanilla tip-over.
Dread
An eye in the corner of your screen shows how afraid you are. Darkness, night, caves, being alone and being near monsters all make it worse. Light, friends, candles and sleep make it better.
The higher your Dread goes:
- The screen closes in and pulses red with your heartbeat
- Fog rolls in, the camera sways, and static creeps in
- **You start hearing things.** Footsteps walking up behind you. Whispers. Knocking. A door opening somewhere. Something breathing over your shoulder.
- Whispers appear on screen, the world blacks out for a moment, and at the very top... you might panic.
None of it is real. Probably.
The Nights
Every night begins with a title card and a warning. Each one is worse than the last.
**Every seventh night is a Dread Night.** The sky turns red, the fog closes in, the Hollows rise in numbers, and nobody sleeps. Something will try to blow out your candles. Keep flint and steel close.
Survival Tools
- **Flashlight**: Real light wherever you point it. Drives off the Watcher, scares Crawlers, banishes Shades. Watch the battery.
- **Ward Candles**: While they burn, fear drains away and the things in the dark keep their distance.
- **Sanity Draught**: Calms the nerves when it's all getting to be too much.
- **Hold your breath**: Hide from the things that hunt by sound. Just don't run out of air.
- **Look behind you**: Glance over your shoulder without turning around. You might not like what you see.
The Story
Twelve torn pages from the journal of Hollowmere's last lamplighter are hidden in chests across the world and carried by the things that hunt you. Together they tell what happened to the village, and how to end it: a ritual altar, an effigy, the eye of the one who watches, and a boss fight that decides whether the sun ever comes up again.
Includes a full advancement tab with 15 advancements, some of them hidden.
