Overview

Better Melon (BM) enhances the usage experience and fun value of melons in Minecraft by improving the melon eating experience, adding melon variants and a dedicated melon-cutting tool, introducing matching slabs, stairs, and carved melon decorative blocks for the different variants, as well as including other melon-related items.

Development inspiration: The vanilla melon experience is underwhelming – its farming process is complicated, but a single melon slice restores very little hunger. Generally, melons are only used as a temporary food source in jungle starts during the early game, and are almost never used in the late game. Therefore, this mod hopes these changes will allow melons to go beyond their role as a mere emergency food, becoming a commonly used element for players in the mid-to-late game thanks to their diverse functionality and decorative value.

Eating Features

Right-click to Eat

• You can right-click a melon block or a partially eaten block to eat it directly, consuming one quarter each time. The block's appearance changes accordingly.
• Glistering melon, enchanted melon, and ender melon can be eaten even when the hunger bar is full.
• Various melon slabs and stairs also support right-click eating.

Melon Variants

The mod adds five melon variants – yellow melon, unripe melon, glistering melon, and enchanted melon.

Vanilla	Yellow	Unripe	Glistering	Enchanted	Ender

• A cut melon block can be eaten directly while held, with the same effect as eating it after placing it down.
• A Quarter Melon Part has an eating time of only 16 game ticks, half that of normal food, making it suitable as portable food.
• Some melon variants grant special effects when eaten:
  • Eating unripe melon has a chance to inflict Hunger.
  • Eating glistering melon additionally restores health.
  • Eating enchanted melon restores health and grants a random beneficial potion effect.
  • Eating ender melon grants the "Ender Resonance" effect, providing teleportation ability and immunity to projectiles and Levitation, but causing a fear of water and rain.

Decorative Melon Blocks

• Slabs and stairs corresponding to the four melon types are added, and they can be waxed with honeycomb to prevent accidental eating.
• Right-clicking a melon, unripe melon, or yellow melon block with shears creates a carved melon; right-clicking a glistering melon or enchanted melon block with shears creates a carved glistering melon; right-clicking an ender melon block with shears creates a carved ender melon.
• Right-clicking a carved melon with a light source block such as a torch, glowstone, or copper lantern in hand yields various melon lanterns with light sources.
• Carved melons can be crafted with redstone lamps and various copper bulbs to create corresponding melon lanterns with redstone lights/copper bulbs.

Special Elements

Huaqiang Melon Knife

• The mod adds a tool, the Huaqiang Melon Knife, which can be used to cut melons and has a chance to inflict a bleeding effect when attacking entities.
• Exclusive enchantment "Unguaranteed Ripe": Using Unguaranteed Ripe I to cut a normal melon has a 50% chance to yield an unripe melon; Unguaranteed Ripe II increases this to 100%. This is the only way to obtain unripe melons and does not affect normal farming.
• Interacting with various melons using the melon knife can also unlock four advancements: "Is the rind of your melon made of gold, or is the flesh?", "Let me ask YOU—you sure this melon’s ripe?", "Are you looking for trouble on purpose, huh?!", "You dare chop my melon, do you?"

Melon Drinks

• Each melon can be brewed into a corresponding drink; drinking some melon drinks grants special effects.
• Brewing a glistering melon with a honey bottle yields Glistering Melon Drink; then brewing that with an enchanted melon produces Enchanted Melon Drink, which grants multiple beneficial effects and may trigger an easter egg.
• Brewing Unripe Melon Drink with a fermented spider eye yields Joyful Melon Drink, which grants a random Suspicious Stew potion effect (possibly negative).
• Ender melon can be brewed with an Awkward Potion to create a Potion of Ender Resonance.

Armor

• Right-click a "Half Melon Part" block with shears in your main hand to hollow out the flesh and obtain a melon rind.
• Right-click an empty carved melon with shears in your main hand to obtain the corresponding carved melon helmet.
• The obtained melon rind and carved melon helmet can be worn on the head, providing slightly more armor than a leather helmet.

Pumpkin

• The mod adds decorative blocks such as pumpkin blocks, pumpkin slabs, and pumpkin stairs.
• Pumpkin blocks can be cut using the Huaqiang Melon Knife.
• Combining a pumpkin pizza base with melon slices, an egg, and milk allows you to craft pizza. Pizza can be placed on the ground and eaten by right-clicking, consuming one quarter each time.
• Arranging the crafting recipe upside down crafts "Azzip", which functions identically to pizza.
