What does Chunk Sending add?
Optimizes chunk packet sending by prioritizing and distributing chunk delivery over time, reducing load on both servers and clients
- Smoother server login, teleporting, respawning, and dimension changes by loading nearby chunks first
- Less network strain by spreading chunk delivery over time, reducing bandwidth spikes and improving playability on slower connections
- Configurable chunk send limits over time, both per player and server wide
- Optional prioritization of chunks in the direction the player is facing
Additional optimizations:
- Reuses constructed chunk packets when sending the same unchanged chunk to multiple players, reducing server overhead
- Controls and staggers item-frame map updates, reducing traffic and processing spikes from large map displays
Mojang later adopted a similar idea in Java Edition 1.20.2 by adding delayed chunk sending to the vanilla game. On modern Minecraft versions (1.21.1+), Chunk Sending builds on the vanilla implementation by exposing configurable limits and behavior, while older versions retain the mod’s original chunk-sending system.
