About this project

What does Hardcore winter add?

Hardcore Winter 1.4.0 — "Under the Ice"

For Minecraft 26.2 · Fabric

hardcore-winter-snow-piling.gif

(Heavy snow blizzard)

The storm doesn't end.

Crops die under open sky. Most herds are gone. The cold builds while you stand in the open — slowly at first, then it starts to hurt.

Heat sources keep you alive. Not all of them reach as far as you think.

There are ways to grow food again. There are places underground that the storm forgot. There are books left by people who came before you, and they had time to write things down.

This mod is for experienced survival players who want a world that fights back from day one.

⚠️ 1.4.0 changes world generation — start a new world. Old saves still load and nothing breaks, but caves and structures only change in ground that hasn't generated yet, so you'll see a seam where you stopped exploring.

⚙️ What changes

  • Weather is permanent. The blizzard never clears.
  • Cold exposure builds over time and eventually damages you.
  • Farming requires more than just water and sunlight.
  • Animal populations are severely thinned.
  • The world has secrets buried below the surface.
  • Leaves rot and grass withers. Nothing green survives long without shelter.
  • Snow piles up overnight and melts back during the day.
  • Mild, Normal, Heavy and Blizzard weathers. Every day is different!
  • The storm is something you can see now — fog closes in as it worsens, the sky darkens and the stars go out, shadows run cold and firelight runs warm.
  • Fish Trap — eight sticks in a ring. Leave it in the water and it fishes while you're busy staying alive.
  • Fish Oil — two fish and a glass bottle. The fuel your lantern runs on.
  • Sled — a spruce boat with two iron ingots under it.
  • Handheld Lantern and Handheld Torch — not crafted. Put an ordinary lantern or torch in your off hand and it becomes one you're properly carrying, burning down as you go.
  • The lantern keeps you warm, lights your way, and fights off what's out there — but it burns through fuel to do it. Right-click to block incoming attacks — fire particles swirl around you while active, draining 1% fuel per second and weakening nearby enemies.

🌱 Growing food again

Crops die under open sky. Nothing you plant outside will come up.

Build a greenhouse. Glass overhead, daylight reaching the soil, and a heat source nearby. Get all three and crops grow twice as fast as they would in a normal world. Miss one and they wither like everything else.

Panes, blocks or stained glass all work — but the sky light has to get through, so a stone ceiling above your glass kills it.

❄️ New in 1.4.0

Fishing that doesn't need you. The Fish Trap costs eight sticks and you know the recipe from the moment you start. Put it in the water — cut through a lake's ice and drop it in the hole. A rod still works if you want to stand there holding one; the trap fills on its own while you're keeping a fire going somewhere else, and you take the fish out by hand. It works best under a frozen lake, because that's where the fish are.

Hot springs. Geothermal pools melt a green hole through the snow — moss, ferns, reeds and a couple of spruce around water the storm can't freeze. Stand at the edge and the cold stops climbing. It's a real heat source, not scenery.

The caves came back. Deep dark, lush caves, dripstone and sulfur caves generate underground again. The surface is still frozen end to end — but the world beneath you isn't one endless grey tunnel any more.

Ancient cities are rare again. They used to be almost everywhere. Now they're where they belong, deep in the dark, and finding one means something.

Wrecks and towers. Beached shipwrecks sit half-buried in the snow, a long way from any sea. Pillager outposts stand where you can see them coming, and the people inside are awake.

The storm looks like a storm. Fog closes in as the weather worsens — a mild night is a haze, a blizzard is arm's length — and gusts pull it tighter in time with the snow. The sky darkens, stars go out under heavy cloud, shadows run cold and firelight runs warm. A campfire now reads as somewhere to be from across a valley.

🔨 Items & recipes

Fish Trap — eight sticks in a ring, middle square left empty. (new in 1.4.0)

S S S
S . S S = stick
S S S . = leave empty

Fish Oil — two fish and a glass bottle, thrown in any order. Cod or salmon, mix them if you like.

Sled — a spruce boat with two iron ingots under it.

. . .
. B . B = spruce boat
I . I I = iron ingot

The Handheld Lantern and Handheld Torch aren't crafted at all. Put an ordinary lantern or torch in your off hand and it becomes one you're properly holding — light that travels with you instead of light you have to put down. The rest of the stack goes back to your inventory.

They burn down while you carry them. The torch gutters out and is gone. The lantern you can refill — hold Fish Oil in your main hand with the lantern in your off hand and right-click. Half a tank per bottle, and you get the empty bottle back.

That's the loop the Fish Trap feeds: fish become oil (or food), oil becomes light, light is the only thing keeping the dark off you.

🔧 Compatibility

Lantern mod compatibility. When first-person animation mods like Punchy, FirstPerson, or Not Enough Animations are installed, the lantern and its arm are no longer drawn twice. Vanilla rendering is suppressed in first person so the other mod's body model handles holding the lantern cleanly.

🖥️ Server Hosting

Server-compatible: Run it on a Fabric dedicated server with no extra setup. All spawn logic, cold mechanics, worldgen, and recipes run server-side.

Players must install the mod client-side too. Without it: the sled won't render, the cold status HUD won't appear, the storm fog and sky won't show, and snow particles will be missing. Make the mod required to join.

📦 Modpack & Redistribution

Modpack-friendly: Hardcore Winter works alongside most Fabric mods. It does rebuild the overworld from the ground up, though — so anything else that changes world generation, biomes, or where structures spawn will fight with it.
