About this project

What does Fish Traps add?

Fish Traps

Fish Traps lets you automate fishing without standing around holding a rod. Place a trap underwater, insert a fishing rod, and let it collect catches while you handle other tasks.

The trap follows vanilla fishing rules, including fishing speed, enchantments, durability, and loot behavior. It is also compatible with mods and datapacks that add items to vanilla fishing loot tables.

How It Works

  1. Place the trap underwater so it becomes waterlogged.
  2. Insert a fishing rod into the trap.
  3. Return periodically to collect the catch or replace the rod.
  4. Place a hopper underneath to extract caught items automatically.

The trap has nine output slots. It stops working when the output is full or when there is no fishing rod inside. If the rod breaks, another rod must be inserted before fishing resumes.

A rod with Mending can repair itself using experience generated by successful catches, allowing it to keep working much longer. Catch experience is handled internally and is not given to the player.

Rising bubbles indicate that the trap is actively fishing.

Open Water

The trap can catch fish and junk whenever it is waterlogged and contains a fishing rod. Treasure catches require open water.

A colored indicator in the trap interface shows whether the open-water requirements are met:

  • Green means treasure is available.
  • Red means the trap can still catch fish and junk, but not treasure.

For open water, the trap needs one water block above it and two blocks of water in each horizontal direction.
