About this project
What does Questline add?
Questline adds a quest book to Vintage Story. Press L to open it. Quests are grouped into chapters and laid out as a tree, so you can see what to do next and what it unlocks. Tasks complete automatically as you play.
The vanilla questline
322 quests in 25 chapters cover the game from knapping flint to steel and sailing: six ages that make the spine of the book, and topic chapters beside them.
|
Group |
Chapters |
|---|---|
|
Ages |
Stone age, Clay and fire, Copper age, Bronze age, Iron age, Steel |
|
Home and food |
Kitchen, Baking, Preserving food, Cheese, Brewing and distilling |

|

|
Travel |
Fishing and boats, Riding, The wider world |
The chapter list shows the ages first, then the topics. A quest in a topic chapter names the age it really belongs to, and a chapter's late branch carries that age's icon: Farming's quern, for one, needs copper tools.
Quests link to the matching handbook guides. Items found only by exploring stay hidden until you find them.
Tasks
Tasks are detected as you play: collecting, crafting, knapping, clay forming, smithing, cooking, smelting and casting, placing and breaking blocks, hunting, riding and trading. Liquids count by the litre. A few steps the game doesn't report, such as kiln firing and quenching, use a checkbox instead.
In an existing world, a quest counts what you have already done when it unlocks.
Rewards
Most quests give a small reward, claimed in the book: charcoal and firewood, seeds, a few ingots, or a rusty gear to spend at traders. Milestone quests let you pick one of three rewards.
Mod support
If any of these mods are installed, Questline adds their quests to the matching chapters (172 quests in all). Where a mod changes a vanilla mechanic, its quest replaces the vanilla one.
- Expanded Foods, with A Culinary Artillery and its modules
- Hex's Mech (adds an Industry chapter)
- Seafarer (adds a Provisions chapter)
- Bricklayers
- Charcoal Kiln
- Wool
- Tailor's Delight
- From Golden Combs
The book
- A chapter list, a tree you can pan and zoom, and quest pages with text, images and recipes.
- Finding the way. A locked quest lists what it needs, each with its chapter and a link to it, and the open quests to start with. Prerequisites from other chapters stand beside their quest in the tree, and a chapter with nothing open yet says what opens it.
- Backspace (or the mouse's back button) steps back the way you came, across quests, chapters and item pages.
- Pin up to three quests under the minimap.
.questline toasts offturns off completion pop-ups. - The Reference tab replaces the handbook (H) with one search across quests, guides and items. Item pages list the quests that use or reward them, and every item in a quest opens its page.
.questline handbook offrestores the vanilla handbook. - Plan how to make this on an item page shows how to make the item from what you carry. By default it shows the next thing to get, not every step.
Multiplayer
A quest can be per player, per party or shared by the whole server. Players create parties in the Party tab. Party members share progress, and each claims their own reward.
For server owners and pack makers
- Settings in
ModConfig/questline.json:RevealLevel(guide,hintsordiscovery) sets how much the planner shows,CreditEarlierWorkturns credit for earlier work on or off,Parties: falsedisables parties, andGearRewardsscales the rusty gears quests give (2 for a server that trades a lot, 0 for none). - In-game editor for players with the
questline.editprivilege (admins have it). Add, move and link quests, then export them as a content mod. - Custom questlines are JSON files in any mod's
assets/<domain>/questline/chapters/. A chapter can extend a built-in one and replace its quests, and"age": truemakes it an age, listed with the ages and labelling quests elsewhere. Quests are checked at load, and a broken quest is disabled and reported without affecting the rest of its chapter. - Pack checker that runs the same checks outside the game.
- API for other mods: report custom tasks, set and check stages, and receive quest-completion events, directly or through the event bus.
- Admin commands:
/questline reload,complete,unlock,reset,graph <item>and more.
