Complete item pages stay together. No summary tabs, no extra section clicks and no storage pagination.

WHAT IT OPTIMIZES

01   Handbook loading

Publishes item pages before meal preparation when compatible. Search titles become available first, with descriptions indexed progressively.

02   Recipe lookup

Narrows recipe, ingredient, cooking and storage candidates so pages spend less time checking unrelated entries.

03   Opening & browsing

Speeds up empty searches, draws visible overview rows and spreads first-time previews across frames. Skips unnecessary filtering when closing.

04   Crafting grid

Indexes ingredient searches and avoids repeated linear recipe deduplication. The game's recipe priority, matching and output generation remain in place.

  • Wildcard-prefix indexing for crafting and handbook ingredient searches.
  • Universal Display Lib 1.3.0 compatibility restores optimization paths previously bypassed with that build.
  • Less index-building work, preallocated candidate collections and live recipe-list updates.
  • Crafting statistics and timings available through .hbopt status.

Updating from an earlier 0.18.0 build? Replace the old ZIP and restart. Keep only one copy installed.

Install & play

  1. Close Vintage Story.
  2. Remove older Handbook Optimizer ZIPs. Disable HoR Performance Optimizer to avoid overlapping optimizers.
  3. Place HandbookOptimizer-0.18.0.zip in your VintagestoryData/Mods folder. Leave it zipped.
  4. Restart the game. Optimizations are enabled by default.

Multiplayer: install it on your client to use it on servers. Server owners can also distribute the same ZIP through the normal join-time mod-download prompt.

Optimization runs on each client. Installing it on a server does not move handbook processing to the server or optimize authoritative server crafting and network delays.

Compatibility that keeps recipe checks intact

Includes compatibility checks for the inspected builds below. These mods are optional, not dependencies.

  • Universal Display Lib: 1.2.3 and 1.3.0
  • A Culinary Artillery: 2.0.0-dev.22
  • Attribute Rendering Library: 3.2.0

Unknown builds or patches use conservative fallbacks where the optimizer cannot verify compatibility. This can reduce the speedup. No HoR installation is required.

Useful commands

.hbopt status Show optimization statistics and collected timings.
.hbopt reset Reset timing samples before reproducing a slowdown.
.hbopt rebuild Clear lookup indexes so they rebuild when needed.

When reporting a remaining freeze, include the item name, what you clicked, your optimizer version, .hbopt status output and the relevant client log.

Built to reduce stalls, with realistic limits.

Complex modded recipes, custom item renderers and other mod code can still take time. Speedups depend on your modpack and active compatibility paths. Headless regression checks cover the inspected game and mod builds; they are not a guarantee of freeze-free gameplay on every server.
