Quick answer

Which justVAWTs release should I use?

Updated 3 months ago
Latest stable file 0.2.1
Game version 1.22.0
Loader Built-in Vintage Story mod system

justVAWTs 0.2.1 targets 1.22.0. It must be installed on the client. Installation on the dedicated server is optional. No extra mods listed for this file.

Where it goes

Is justVAWTs required on the client, server, or both?

It must be installed on the client. Installation on the dedicated server is optional.

Client Required
Dedicated server Optional
Loader for this release Built-in Vintage Story mod system
Required install it here Optional supported, not mandatory Not supported do not install here Source doesn’t say do not assume

This release supports both sides, but the source does not require it on the server.

What else does justVAWTs 0.2.1 need?

0.2.1. Change the file and its required mods may change too.

No extra mods listed for this file

This file does not list any required mods. Do not add a library just because a different file uses it.

Before you install it

Add justVAWTs without breaking your instance.

Built for justVAWTs 0.2.1. Pick another file and the loader, install side or required mods may change.

  1. 01

    Stick to this file

Use 0.2.1. It targets 1.22.0; another release may have different loader, side or dependency requirements.

  2. 02

    Bring the mods it needs

This file does not list any required mods. Do not add a library just because a different file uses it.

  3. 03

Put it on the correct side

It must be installed on the client. Installation on the dedicated server is optional.

  4. 04

    Pick the file you checked

Use the “Get this file” button beside 0.2.1. It opens that exact file at the source.

About this project

What does justVAWTs add?

JustVAWTs

adds vertical axis wind turbines to the vanilla game mechanical systems.

Want something that fills the gap until you can get your hand on a windmill rotor and sails?
Don't want MillWright and an addon on top of that to get VAWTs?
Do you just want something that spins?

Look no further, justVAWTs has your back!

What is in there?

Several types of wind turbines, each type with their own maximum speed and torque.
I have tried to balance out how easy a VAWT is to achieve and how much power it generates compared to the windmill rotor wile trying to apply at least a little bit of real world logic.
This means VAWTs in general do not generate as much torque as a windmill rotor with sails, but are easier to make.
Some models now have large variants, which appear as a 3x3 multi block in the world.

Helical turbine (new large variant! in 0.1.0)

Simple wooden turbine with a helical shape
Low max speed
Low power
Relatively easy to obtain
Has variants for all base game wood types (purely cosmetic)
hint: because of how low their power delivery is, they are best used with a gear reduction

Savonius turbine (new large variant! in 0.1.0)

Metal turbine with a savonius design
Medium max speed
Medium power
Has variants for all base game metal types (purely cosmetic)

Staggered savonius turbine

Staggered version of the metal savonius design
Medium low max speed
Medium high power
Has variants for all base game metals types (purely cosmetic)

Cloth savonius (new large variant! in 0.1.0)

If you want a cloth design after all
Medium max speed
High power
Has variants for all base game cloth stitch types (purely cosmetic)

Wing turbine (new large variant in 0.1.0)

Wooden turbine that uses wing profiles for blades
Wings are made of boards using sandpaper
High speed
Medium low power
Has variants for all base game wood types (purely cosmetic)

Panemone turbine (new in 0.1.0)

A very primitive turbine made of wood and woven mats.
This should make it easier to obtain a windmill early (even in hot climates)
Blades are made of woven mats, reed or papyrus.
Requires a surrounding structure to channel the wind
The surrounding structure determines the spin direction of the turbine
Doors and trapdoors can be used to throttle the turbine or even change its direction

Double wing turbine

Twice the wings!
Medium high speed
Medium high power
Has variants for all base game wood types (purely cosmetic)

Turbine wing

Component for the wing turbines
Has variants for all base game wood types

Sandpaper

Needed to make the turbine wings (wing surfaces have to be smooth!)
Has variants for all base game sand types (purely cosmetic)

Reed mat (new in 0.1.0)

Needed to make panemone turbine blades, can be made of papyrus or reeds

Panemone blade (new in 0.1.0)

Component for panemone turbines
Has variants for all papyrus and reed. (reed and papyrus turbine blades can not be mixed)

How to use

Basic VAWTs

A VAWT must be attached to an axle on at least one side (usually the bottom makes sense) or any other VAWT
The axle must be vertical.
It is required that the axle supporting a set of VAWTs is supported
If any part of the vertical column of VAWTs is broken, all VAWTs in the set will break and drop.

If the wind picks up, the VAWTs will begin to spin.
If a VAWT goes over its maximum speed, it will begin to introduce drag to the mechanism.
Adding more VAWTs to a mechanism in any way will linearly increase the torque applied, as all VAWT blocks individually add torque to the mechanism.

Panemone (new!)

The panemone needs a wind funnel to direct the wind on one side of its blades.
The position of the wind funnel determines the direction in which the panemone spins.
To do this, enclose a panemone turbine in solid blocks, and leave open a trench on one side.

If there are no blocks preventing wind from hitting the panemone, it wil not supply torque.
If there are blocks all around the panemone, it will also not supply torque.
If there are more openings than the 2 required for a trench, the panemone will deliver less power.
You can also use doors and trapdoors in order to throttle a panemone turbine by opening or closing them!

Oh no, something happened!

Stay calm, and post here to let me know something is not working, or directly open a ticket in the issue tracker (codeberg)
Include the version of the game you are running and a list of your running mods, and i will look into the issue.

Change log

0.1.0
Fix many state related bugs
Redo models of all turbines
Add panemone turbine
Fix and update translations (EN only for now)

0.0.2 :
Fix crafting recipes, change recipe for turbine wings to use and return a stack of 4, and consume the sandpaper in the process (because for some reason sandpaper will not function as a tool)
