About this project
What does Passive Storms add?
Passive Storms
I came up with the idea for Passive Storms because I love the atmosphere of Vintage Story, but sometimes I wanted a little room to breathe.
Part of the inspiration came from Minecraft's survival mode. In Minecraft, the daytime generally feels safe, giving you time to gather resources, build, explore, and prepare for the dangers that come after sunset. That rhythm always felt natural to me. The world isn't harmless, but danger arrives at a time that makes sense and gives you a chance to prepare for it.
I wanted to bring a similar sense of pacing to Vintage Story without losing the tension that makes the game special.
I wanted mornings where you could wander through the woods, work on a project near your base, go mining a little farther than you probably should, or just explore without every creature immediately trying to kill you. At the same time, I didn't want to remove the danger entirely. The tension is a huge part of what makes Vintage Story feel special.
So the idea became pretty simple:
-
During the day, creatures leave you alone unless you provoke them.
-
At night, the world becomes dangerous again.
-
Underground areas remain hostile regardless of the time of day.
-
Temporal storms are always hostile.
-
Any creature can have a configurable chance to be hostile at all times, keeping encounters unpredictable.
The result is a survival experience that feels calmer without feeling easy. You can focus on building, exploring, and adventuring during the day, while nights, caves, and temporal storms become the moments when preparation and caution really matter.
This ended up working especially well on my small casual server, where not everyone wants constant combat pressure 24/7 but still wants the world to feel dangerous when it matters.

Disclaimer
This mod was built using AI-assisted coding tools alongside a lot of manual tweaking, testing, debugging, and gameplay balancing by me.
I know AI-assisted coding is a controversial topic in modding spaces, and I completely understand why. For me, smaller projects like this have become a way to learn. I use AI as a tool to help study existing systems, understand how the game works, learn C#, and gradually teach myself mod development. I'm not interested in pretending I wrote every line from scratch.
Planned Features
-
Low temporal stability region detection
-
Safe torch zones
Compatibility
Passive Storms is currently only tested on Vintage Story 1.22.2. If you try it on another version, I'd love to hear how it works.
