About this project

What does Modular Weapons add?

Currently Serving:
162 Swords...
27 Axes...
...in 6 different materials.

Introduction:

This thing has been rotting on my SSD for close to 3 years now, might as well publish it.

Modular Zaws, as the name implies, adds new, fully modular weapons to Vintage Story, they require at least bronze and forging to be created.
Different components offer different small bonuses to a weapon, to durability (10%+), damage (Depends on material type, about 7%)  and reach (0.25+ meters)

For example, a Zaw with 3 reach boosting components would have 0.75+ extra meters of reach compared to a Falx.

While im not fully satisfied with its currrent state, and my work irl and in making Cataclysm Wars and its sequels (find them on Steam) leaves me little time and inspiration to work on it. I think this is too cool of a proof of concept to not be published.

Description:

Spoiler!

This mod evolved/devolved/mutated from a weapons pack i was working on, after struggling to get the VS IDE to run properly on my PC i realized i would be limited to .json modding, and that due to how combat in VS works you can't exactly make it more interesting by just adding weapon variety.
Then i realized weapon models are saved as .jsons, and that those are still legible by text editors, it gave me the idea that by carefully modelling different components and gluing them together in a text editor, you can create many different weapons with just a few models. And it worked! Leading to the creation of this mod.

The design idea behind this mod is to grant players an extra degree of self expression and create a sense of attachment to a weapon, when playing with friends using this mod it was fun to see players have their own preferences and seeing different weapons be passed down from player to player, the fact you can get the same statline from different part combinations is fully intentional.

In an attempt to not supersede base game content, Falx blades can be used to make Zaws, and the blackguard can make modular shortswords as well.

Special Weapons:

Some specific combinations have special names and descriptions, mostly references to things me and my friends enjoy. Can you find them all?

Swords:

Swords are based on the standard Falx, they are made from a handle, guard, and blade.
A blade costs 1 ingot of any kind, and determines the weapon's material.
Guards can be forged, or crafted from other guards, they are forged in pairs (each one costs 0.5 ingots), their material has no effect on the weapon's properties or aesthetics.
Handles are made from sticks.

Axes:

Axes specialise on close range combat, trading -20% durability and -0.25 reach in exchange for 15% extra base damage.
An axe front costs 1 ingot of any kind, and determines the weapon's material.
Axe backs work identically to Sword guards.
Handles are made from sticks.

Known Issues:

Balance is completely vibes based.

Some weapons have borked material textures.

Guidebook/Creative inventory bloat.

Future Plans:

Likely:

A recipe for uncrafting intact Falxes and Shortswords to be made into zaws

More Axes and/or Swords.

Polearms of some kind.

A way to repair weapons.

Unlikely:

Some kind of universal polearm weapon that can use Sword and axe heads.

More sword components.

Very Unlikely:

A way to rename zaws.

Rusted/Ruined versions of Zaws in dungeons and jars.

Special abilities for Zaws.

FAQ:

Spoiler!

Do you take requests?

No, but feel free to post suggestions, i might give them a try.

I can't find a specific weapon!

Due to the simple nature of this mod (code wise at least), its unlikely to be actually missing, its likely just a named weapon.

Does this mod work on version 1.xx.x?

- As stated above, the mod is fairly simple so i rarely needed to update it. If anything breaks i will try to fix it thought.

Whats up with the lore?

Some weapons are intentional references to things me and my friends enjoy, certain combinations have specific names and "lore", needless to say nothing of it is canon to Vintage Story itself.

Is there any rhyme or reason for what bonuses a component provides?

At some point there was, i kinda gave up on it after a while though.
