About this project
What does Wild Bee Range Extender add?
This mod improves the downward range that wild beehives can search for flowers from 7 blocks to 20 blocks
Why do I want this for my world's wild bees?
Well, if you are just going around to wild beehives destroying them for some quick honey, that's great go do that.
If you want to grow the hive with flowers and place down a skep to take some home, that's also great go do that.
But, you may find that a hive will keep saying 0 flowers for days on end. This is where you learn that hives that are more than 7 blocks above the ground, will never be able to find those flowers that are already there or ones you place there. If you look online on reddit threads or youtube, everyone says for the high up hives, "oh just build like a ring of dirt around the top of the tree and the put flowers there", the pic attached to this mod is from Mischief of Mice's tutorial.
In my opinion this gameplay workaround was such an incredibly jarring, video-gamey thing to do in a game that otherwise prides itself on survival immersion. I coulnd't bear doing this in my world (which also had soil falling enabled), so I tried to figure out if there was a config value to change for the beehives. Nope, turns out the -7 value is hardcoded. So, I made a quick patcher mod to fix this value to something reasonable.
Hopefully in the future this mod wont be needed, the game devs could add this fix or add it as a /config command.
This is my first mod. From reading all the different ways to make this patch, I ended up monkeypaching with a Harmony Transpiler which seems to be the best way to do this, where it swaps out the -7 argument in this file with my chosen value. But that might be patching more than this one instance, it's hard to troubleshoot.
The -7 being patched is the one in the Api.World.BlockAccessor.WalkBlocks call within OnScanForEmptySkep in https://github.com/anegostudios/vssurvivalmod/blob/master/BlockEntity/BEBeehive.cs
I think this mini mod can be improved with letting the user in a config file, or even better with a / comamnd, set the 20 value to something else per world or even also a default for all worlds that arent yet set.
