About this project

What does Ambient Symphony add?

Give the silence a voice. Ambient Symphony fills Vintage Story with living sound — the deep hum of the caves, birdsong drifting through the forest, wind across the dunes, frogs at the pond, a tension you can feel when something lurks in the dark. It combines the spirit of Salty's Cave Symphony and Forest Symphony, then reaches further across the whole world — all rebuilt from the ground up for low CPU and minimal FPS impact.
It is fully client-side: no server install, no network traffic.

What you'll hear

Caves - a deep darkness-and-depth hum, wind howling at cave entrances, water drips (with falling droplets), bats, and rats.
Forests -  day/night birdsong that shifts with temperature (exotic calls in the heat, tundra birds in the cold), pond & frog ambience, insects, creaking trees in the wind, a dawn chorus at sunrise, and a startled flock when you fell a tree.
Biomes - distinct ambience for desert, grassland, swamp, ocean, tundra, and jungle, plus coast (gulls), alpine (eagles, distant rockfall), the deep-cave abyss, geode caverns (crystalline chimes near ore), hot springs, and a temporal-instability dread drone.
Reactive moments - a tension drone when drifters draw near (worse at night), a freezing wind-chill ring and a near-death heartbeat that track your body, an aurora shimmer on clear cold nights, and rare distant stingers — a branch snap, a settling rock — so the world is never quite silent.
Atmosphere - cave reverb for underground depth, ambience that muffles when you're sheltered indoors, automatic ducking under the game's own music, and wind-reactive outdoor beds.

Augments only

Ambient Symphony only adds sounds the base game has no ambience for. Rain, thunder, wind, underwater, ocean waves, lava, campfires, rift hum, and every creature call are left to Vintage Story -- so this layers with the game, never on top of it.

Built to be light

  • One environment check runs about twice a second using cheap lookups and is shared by every system -- nothing re-scans the world.
  • Budgeted scanning spreads any heavier work across ticks; blocks are never read off-thread.
  • A capped sound mixer limits how many sounds play at once, so overlapping ambience can't overload the audio engine.

Configure it your way

Every system can be toggled and tuned in ModConfig/AmbientSymphony.json. Prefer a menu? Install the ConfigLib mod for an in-game settings GUI, with one-click volume presets (Subtle / Balanced / Immersive). There's also an .ambientsymphony chat command that prints exactly what the mod is sensing -- handy for tuning.

A note on AI Generated sounds

Currently there are 191 sounds files in the mod's assets.  Of those about 30 are sourced from open source/royalty-free services, and 1 of them is "CC BY-NC-SA".  So 160 sounds are generated by AI, specifically by 11labs and they sound.... ok.  I am not a sounds effects producer, so the AI generated sounds allowed me to release this mod months ahead of the timeline in which I researched and hand-pick each audio file.  I would love to replace all the AI audio with human-produced audio, but I don't have the time.  The goal of this mod is not to show off my (lack of) audio creation talents.  It is to provide the tooling for a more immersive experience. Every sound can be disabled in the mod-config if you do not like it -- I will not take offense. If anyone wants to "donate" audio files, or grant me permissions to use audio files (Salty...?) I will replace the AI sounds.

Compatibility

  • Vintage Story 1.22.x (built against 1.22.0; valid through 1.22.3 and later 1.22.x).
  • Client-side safe to add to your own client on any server.
  • Optional: ConfigLib (for the settings GUI only).

Credits

  • Salty (SaltyWater) — for the original Cave Symphony and Forest Symphony that inspired this project.
  • Maltiez — for ConfigLib.
  • Anego Studios — for a wonderfully moddable game.
