What is The Under?

The Under is a whole second world you reach through a gate you build yourself. Shattered islands of pale stone drift in an endless violet void, under a sky that never turns to day. There is no ground below and no horizon above — fall off an edge and it is over.

Everything down there is exclusive: creatures that appear nowhere else, plants that grow while you watch, vines that spread across your walls over days, ruined towers with treasure and a guardian, and two families of stone you can build with. All of it runs on the server — your players need nothing but the game.

Getting there

Underrock is the key. It turns up rarely while mining any block in the normal world — about one in 250, so a gate is a milestone rather than a grind. Stack about ten of them into an upright frame and the portal ignites by itself, and you are Under.

Getting home is taken care of: a matching gate stands waiting on the arrival island, and stepping through it puts you back exactly where you left from. Every player's own entry point is remembered, so two people who came from opposite ends of the map each go back to their own doorstep.

The world

The Under generates endlessly as your players explore, always as a band of floating islands with void above and below. Time is locked at a permanent dusk, the sky carries its own weather, and the dimension has its own music — two dark tracks in a slow rhythm with long silences, so it stays atmospheric instead of becoming background noise.

New arrivals always land on the same island, and that arrival island is protected: nobody but an operator can dig it away or wall it in, so no one can strand the next visitor. Everything outside that small square is yours to shape.

The Undermen

Tall, thin figures with glowing violet veins wander the islands. They ignore you completely — until you look one in the eyes. Then it comes for you: it blinks across the world to close the distance, dodges arrows, and hits hard enough to make you regret the eye contact. Kill one and it may leave 0-2 Underpearls.

Throw a pearl and you teleport to wherever it lands — the classic escape route, and the fastest way across a gap you did not plan for. Spectres and void brutes share the islands with them.

The Underplant

Plant a bloom on Understone and it starts to climb. It branches, twists and grows a little differently every single time — no two plants are alike. Break the trunk and the whole plant comes down at once, dropping everything it was made of. Wild groves grow on their own out in the world, so there is always something to harvest.

The plant is a full material chain: harvest stems, press them into blocks at the workbench, and craft a complete 15-piece furniture set at the furniture bench — bed, chair, table, bookshelf, wardrobe, door, trapdoor, ladder, shelf, sign, stool, bench, counter, crate and platform, all in the plant's own violet wood.

Living vines

Glowing vines creep sideways along walls and hang down over the edges, exactly the way you know them: they hold on to each other, so a strand can dangle far below the wall that started it. Cut one link and everything under it drops. They keep spreading while nobody is watching, they never overgrow an entire structure, and they stop once there is nowhere left to go — no runaway growth, no server strain.

Ruined towers

Four kinds of overgrown ruins are scattered across the islands: a watchtower, a temple, a ruin tower and an ocean dome, each rebuilt from Under stone and draped in glowing vines. Every one of them holds a chest with the rarest ore in the game — and a red-veined guardian with five times the health and five times the damage of an Underman.

That guardian watches a wide zone around its chest and notices you the moment you enter it, whether it can see you or not. Walls, ledges and pits will not save you: it simply appears next to you. Towers are rare on purpose — finding one is an event.

Building material

The towers are built from two families of stone, one dark and one pale, in 17 shapes each: full blocks, cobble, bricks, stairs, half slabs, walls, pillars, beams, ornate and smooth variants. Loot them out of a ruin, or make them yourself at the Builder's Bench, where they slot into the same shape menus as the native stone:

  • 1 Understone → any dark shape (Builder's Bench)
  • 1 Understone + 1 Underbloom → 1 Underrose brick (Workbench)
  • 1 Underrose brick → any pale shape (Builder's Bench)

Underward Potion

Brewed at the alchemy bench from five Underpearls, five life essences and an empty bottle. Drink it and the next hits you take are blocked completely — no matter how hard they are. Exactly what you want in your pocket before you open a guarded chest.

For server owners

Drop the jar into your mods folder and start the server — the Under creates itself, no setup, no commands. Everything persists across restarts: plant growth, vine growth, portals, guardians and their zones.

The Under is built to be a farm world: delete the world folder whenever it grows too large, restart, and the plugin cleans up its own data and builds a fresh one with a new layout. Nothing is left behind.

Commands (operators)

  • /gunder tp — travel to the Under
  • /gunder back — return to your previous world
  • /gunder create — create the world by hand
  • /gunder gate — rebuild the return gate on the arrival island
  • /gunder status — world info
  • /gunder spawn <type> — summon an Under creature

Everything is configurable World shape (island size, density, height band), portal cooldown and return world, Underrock drop rate, plant and vine growth speed, wild grove frequency, tower frequency and chest contents, guardian zone, potion charges, arrival protection radius — and each recipe group can be switched off individually if you want the towers to be the only source of Under blocks.

Compatibility Server-side only. No client mod, no resource pack, no external dependency. Works alongside other Glymera plugins.
