About this project

What does SimpleHunger add?

SimpleHungerSystem

SimpleHungerSystem adds a lightweight survival layer to Hytale with hunger, thirst, configurable food and drink values, and a compact radial HUD.

Hunger and thirst can be enabled or disabled independently through the server config. Players can customize their HUD position and switch between vertical and horizontal layouts using /sh settings.

The mod uses Hytale's native keyed HUD system. HUDRouter is not required.

Features

  • Hunger and thirst decrease over time.
  • Independently enable or disable hunger and thirst through the server config.
  • Food and drink items restore configurable amounts.
  • Built-in support for raw and cooked food values.
  • Configured drink handling for bottles and other drink items.
  • Portable SimpleHunger water flask item.
  • Compact radial HUD with stacked or side-by-side indicators.
  • In-game HUD positioning with an on-screen preview.
  • HUD position and layout saved separately for each player.
  • Hungry, starving, thirsty, dehydrated, nourished, and hydrated status effects.
  • Optional pause while sleeping.
  • Optional idle pause.
  • Optional biome-based hunger and thirst modifiers.
  • Compatibility API for other mods.

HUD

The default HUD shows two small radial indicators near the lower-left corner:

  • Chicken leg icon for hunger.
  • Water drop icon for thirst.

Open /sh settings to:

  • Move the indicators up, down, left, or right in 10 px steps.
  • Preview the position directly on screen.
  • Switch between stacked and side-by-side layouts.
  • Reset the position and layout to their defaults.

Changes are saved automatically for each player.

When hunger or thirst is disabled in the server config, its indicator is hidden. The remaining indicator is displayed without an empty slot.

The mod uses this native HUD key:

simplehunger.survival.hud

Configuration

Start the server once to generate the configuration files. Stop the server before editing them, then restart it to apply changes.

Main config files:

HungerConfig.json
Foods.json
Drinks.json
BiomeModifiers.json
  • HungerConfig.json controls enabled systems, maximum values, decay rates, damage, thresholds, sleeping pause, idle pause, and well-fed settings.
  • Foods.json controls how much hunger each food item restores.
  • Drinks.json controls how much thirst each drink item restores.
  • BiomeModifiers.json controls optional biome multipliers for hunger and thirst decay.

Enable Or Disable Hunger And Thirst

These options are configured in HungerConfig.json, not in the player's HUD settings.

Both systems are enabled by default:

"HungerEnabled": true,
"ThirstEnabled": true

To keep hunger enabled but disable thirst:

"HungerEnabled": true,
"ThirstEnabled": false

Disabling a system turns off its corresponding survival mechanics and HUD indicator.

These are entries inside the existing config, not a replacement for the entire file. Restart the server after changing them.

Commands

Command Description
/sh Show command help.
/sh settings Adjust personal HUD position and layout.
/sh hide Hide the HUD without disabling survival mechanics.
/sh show Show the HUD again.
/shconfig Open the permission-protected configuration and food/drink value editor.
/shversion Show the installed version and HUD mode.
/sethunger <player> <amount> Set a player's hunger level.
/setthirst <player> <amount> Set a player's thirst level.

Food And Drink Values

Food and drink values are configured by item ID.

For example:

  • Cooked food can restore more hunger than raw food.
  • Berries can restore a small amount of hunger.
  • A filled water flask restores thirst.

Server owners can add or change values in Foods.json and Drinks.json without rebuilding the mod.

Compatibility

SimpleHungerSystem exposes this compatibility API:

com.simplehunger.api.SimpleHunger

Other mods can use normal Java access or reflection to:

  • Read, set, or add hunger.
  • Read, set, or add thirst.
  • Register food values.
  • Register drink values.

This supports race, class, and gameplay mods such as vampire or werewolf systems that modify normal eating behavior.

No external HUD routing dependency is required.

Installation

Place the JAR in your Hytale mods directory, then restart the game or server.

For a local macOS installation:

~/Library/Application Support/Hytale/UserData/Mods

Remove older SimpleHungerSystem JARs before installing the updated version.
